Title: M*$%£$$%^%$^%$^ Windows 2000
Post by: aldo_14 on September 20, 2003, 11:13:45 am
Right...this may seem a daft question (and probably will be in retrospect), but why the hell won't Win 2000 let me drag, or cut/copy and paste files into different locations?

At the mo, the only way I can move a folder is to compress it, and then extract it to the right directory with Winzip........this is starting to get intensely annoying, too.

First off, what happens when you try to copy or move files? Does it happen with folders as well?

Secondly, try to think what you did before this problem appeared. Usually it can be fixed by undoing whatever you did. If you can't come up with anything, reinstall W2k.

Never happened to me either in W2k or WXP.

You must have contracted a virus pal.

Anyway, it happened to me too - I have a gut feeling that it's msblast.exe, because it screws your windows uptdate, and disables any windows explorer based uplication.

Get a Firewall and do a virus search&destroy.

It should solve your problems.

Use this, if you don't trust your own software or it's outdated:

It, er, seems to have fixed itself............ I don't think it could be a virus, because I only installed 2000 last night, and all my email is scanned by the server (either yahoo or, more likely. the uni server).  I guess it could be sneaked in through a comms port, but I haven't seen anything symptomatic.... all I can think is that something was 'up' with my keyboard / mouse drivers.

For point of reference, the problem was that i could click and hold down on a file icon to my hearts content, but nothing would actually happen (i.e. no icon).  Also, I could cut the file out, but the 'paste' option in the relevant menus would remain greyed out and ineffective.

EDIT:  Seems to have gone dud again.... I think it's something to do with my internet connection.  Anyone know what scvhost.exe is?

SVCHOST is a Windows system application that runs DLL files for the OS.

**checks Processes List quick**

I currently have 5 copys running.

It typically shouldn't be using any CPU cycles, but if it is that's you're culprit.

Check for a Process called MSBLAST and end it.
Do a search for MSBLAST on all Local drives and delete ALL instances.
