Title: Is it still possible to play FS2 on PXO?
Post by: kv1at3485 on September 20, 2003, 06:10:50 pm
If so, I have a problem.  I can't get past the 'Automatically joining the public channel' stage.

However, if PXO is kaput, then this problem doesn't matter.

Seems to work. Check your settings and give it another go.

I was under the impression it was kaput, but I may be wrong... Kazan is currently implementing a brand-new "Better than PXO" Server for it, so you may want to hold out for a little while. :D

I just came from there... Make sure that you have Multi.cfg in your data folder... That seems to fix the problem.

Hmm, it still stalls at the 'autojoining public channel' stage, and I do have a multi.cfg file in my data directory.  Any other ideas what I might be doing wrong?  Thanks.

They just grow and grow with new quotes, and they never bother to prune the old ones. I myself use only one quote at a time.

Hm... If you use AOL, like me, choose 56K, not the one with (and AOL) tagged on the end... That solved my problem...

Nope, that can't be it...  I don't use AOL.  I'm sure I have the right settings in the Launcher Setup.  Dial-up internet and 56k connection speed.

Yup.  During the connection process, it goes through the logging on stage without trouble.  I know my login name and my password are both correct.

That was the first thing I tried. :)  Are there any internet-specific settings that I should be aware of?  Cookies?

Firewall maybe.
Router settings(if you have one)
Umm, other stuff. :p

Hmm, I tried disabling my firewall, but that doesn't seem to have done it.  Could PXO be downloading a whole bunch of stuff to my computer?  Should I be patient and just wait, then?

PXO never uploads anything to your computer. Only thing left that I can see personally is if you haven't updated FS2 with the latest version... but PXO usually checks that on login.

Hrmph.
I'm lost for ideas :blah:

You can disable the version check though. If kat has done that and then tried connecting this could be the result cause it doesn't sound like vali-hell is the problem.

The version check goes through fine.  I bet that when I figure out what's wrong, I'm going to hit my head on the table... :p

It may be something that seems completely unrelated..
For example, one of the Catalyst driver releases (3.something) killed PXO for me (with symptoms just like you're having now).

No idea how that could be, but the problem was repeatable.

I doubt its a driver problem... I have had this problem, but don't know what i did to fix it...

Hmm, I'm using Catalyst 2.4.  (I tried upgrading to the newest one but it killed off some other program, so I went back to this one.)  I hope that it is not my drivers, otherwise this problem might just mean that trying to get on PXO will be just too much trouble. :(

Ha!  Problem solved!  All I had to do was create a new pilot!    Thanks for all your input and help, it was just dumb me all along.

P.S.  If any individuals who read this were part of the first game I tried to play on PXO, I must apologize for leaving so suddenly.  I was disconnected.

It happens with 56K, and your ping was >1 second

it looks like his name is a combination of the Soviet KV1A and T34/85 tanks.

In other news, Freespace 2 Open is supposed to be getting a new online server of sorts.  I dont have all the details, but im sure it would be a nice measure until we can optimize the netcode *kills self*

PXO will be making a comeback soon via the Source Code Project - implementation of the FS2NetD (FS2 Open PXO) interface is 90% complete - i just have to add tables checking and do a MASSIVE stress test on the system.
