Just a thought - what happens when a large capship is disabled? Say, an Orion probably has too large a reactor to ship in the parts for field repairs, so what to do they do with it?
I always thought there should be a 'tugboat' class for this sort of thing, to tow it back to space-dock, as there isn't anything really sutied to it in the game.

aha
- I think I remember that from the Darkness Rising demo I had...

No, there are several missions where disabled ships are repaired on-site. Also, a reactor might take a long time to repair, but usually what is put out of commission is the engine unit itself, which I imagine are much easier to fix.

Yeah, but surely it would be more effective to tow the thing into hyperspace to a safe location - the NTF Trinity (?) and Iceni in the nebula being a good example. I mean, if you can't send in a destroyer to protect it, tow the damn thing away.

The Akheton disrupts the electronics of the system. The damage is caused by the electrical malfunctions. Its not like your little fighter is ripping the guts of the engine core out.
The repair work is replacing electronics and re-routing power. Most of the blast of a bomb is going to do similar, although more significant damage.

But placing yourself behind a ship and nailing it's engines with a Maxim will surely make big holes into the engines itself, not the electronics.

But in some missions, you have to keep that ship intact for capture. (http://dynamic.gamespy.com/~freespace/ubb/noncgi/smile.gif)

Remember that mission Agronautica? An Argo transport had to bring reactor core material to repair the Aquitane after it had been disabled by the beams of a Rakshasa cruiser, not by a fighter.

And then they tried to destroy the Iceni. Not very nice, they are.

I heard they caught some kind of space-crack related disease that eats away at your joystick.
