Title: Emptying the XP page file

How can I empty or otherwise manage the page file? My Brother is insistant on playing those MS online games now that we have DSL :hopping: I'm thinking that's why I'm running a 900MB page file. :hopping:

I too have had a problem with large page-file sizes, and often the only way to lower them back down again is to reset the computer.  XP will not let you manage to page file size in any way, shape or form.

Start -----> Settings ------> Control Panel ------->system

Advanced ------> Performance ------> Advanced ------->

Click 'Change' in the virtual memory area.



Ahhhh.. That's what I love about Windows, everything is a mouseclick or fourteen away :sigh:

Windows XP should empty the page file on its own, but every once in a while it doesn't.

Pagefile settings can be found where Flipside wrote. WinXP or W2k does not automatically clear/empty pagefile on shutdown, you need to use a tweaker or registry editor for the setting to take effect. Please note that it will slow down shutdown a lot.

- Start Regedit.
- Navigate to HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Control\Session Manager\Memory Management
- Select ClearPageFileAtShutdown from the list on the right.
- Right on it and select Modify.
- Change the value to 1 to enable.
- Reboot.

It is recommended to put pagefile on the fastest drive. Preferrably on different partition, or even better, on different drive alltogether than where XP is installed. Fixed size is usually better than dynamic.

A good page file is one that is set to a fixed size of about twice however much RAM you have.

I.E.

128 mb of RAM = a 256 MB page file
256 mb of RAM = a 512 MB page file
ect.
