Title: Will FS2 open play campaign movies?
Post by: mnftg64 on September 25, 2003, 11:22:34 am
I know it doesn't play the opening movie for the game, but will it play the campaign movies from the original campaign?

FS2 Open can't play any MVE movies. That means the intro and all the rest (like the Bastion closing the node, ending and others) won't play.

No, volition have not given the scp the rights to use the MVE format stuff. It will only work on Vanilla Freespace 2.
However, on the up side, you can now play AVI files as your movies, making it a damn sight easier to create your own :)

Flipside :D

No, this won't and don't even ask for it.

Interplay owns the mve format and codec, and they guard it like a mother lion its "kittens" and we would get half-coccked in no time if we tried anything funny.

On the other hand an avi conversion is availible of most of the old files or you could look for a converter yourself, and make some DivX codec compressed files.

Actually that way you could have almost all of the present :V: releases on a single CD.

I'm still kinda new to this editing stuff, so bear with me.

If I were to create the old movies in a different format, how would I get FS2 Open to play them at the proper times during the main campaign and possibly others?

the movies have been (or are going to be, I know they got FS1) recompressed into Divx

Where would we find them, if they've been done?

we could easily make it so that everytime fs2 open sees "play('somemovie.mve');" it interprets it as "play('somemovie.avi');"

so when they're compressed into divx you'll just have to have the CD in the drive or them on your harddrive in your data dir

No need. I simply altered the campaign file when I converted the movies :D

The full details of how to use them are in the technical section of my FAQ. The movies themselves are hosted on Fractux's FTP server.

I would work on this, but I am still trying to teach myself how to texture map a ship, then glow map one. this kinda of stuff is still just a little beyond me yet.

The ANIs aren't up on the site in the link from kajormas faq. Anyone know where I can get them?

or

Anyone know what software can read mve and allow me to convert it to avi?

You can convert them the same way I did. The program from converting is illegal so I can't link to it here but running a google search for MVE2AVI should turn it up. (make sure you get the version that works with freespace!)

You'll need a LOT of free diskspace. The uncompressed avi file that is produced can be huge. The intro alone resulted in a 4 Gig avi file. You then compress that file using something like VirtualDub.

The site is still there but I believe the Server has been having some problems lately.

The file is bad dangit, it seems everthing is against my completing this task. I am going to try to dl it from another computer tonight, but if someone could IM me or e-mail the file to me as an attachment that would be great too. My info is in my profile
