When you submit a news item for publication, keep in mind a number of things:
1) Although HTML is allowed and works, keep it limited to the basics - bold, italics, underlining (use of which is discourged), lists, and, most importantly, paragraphs. Text coloring is most likely a bad idea in most cases. If you want to use an image, make sure it's small - max of around 200x150px or the equivalent - link it to a larger image somewhere if you must. And speaking of links....
2) Link, link, link! I'm gonna point fingers here, but don't be embarrassed or anything - it's just an example of news posts that should have been linked to what they are talking about:
[list=1]
- Unknown Target's FSURP post (http://dynamic4.gamespy.com/~freespace/hlp/item_show.php?itm=254). First of all, the first mention of the subject should be linked to the corresponding site, or if none exists, the appropriate section of the new site. Secondly, UT mentions people submitting plots... don't make people hunt for a thread, link to it. And pay special attention if that thread might possibly be in a restricted or private area of the forums - not fun getting a "You are not allowed to view this thread" message.
- GalacticEmperor's "Freespace Copyright Thread" post (http://www.hard-light.net/vwbb/showthread.php?threadid=9439) - on the VWBB! Now there's no problem whatsoever with posting about stuff happening on the VWBB, or on any relevant site for that matter, but link to it! :)
-
They didn't link?!
....Can I ban them?
Seriously though, points well made. The more linked everything is - the better informed everyone is!

Indeed, link to Karajorma's FS3 FAQ would also have been a good idea. :)

Is there also room for smaller news items? Like me starting a fanfic. Cause there have been 44+ views but 0 comments. I'd really like some exposure :p

I guess i'll have to learn these people about news posting ;)
-
 You show 'em, Wind! ;)
We might post up a little primer on basic HTML and guidelines for 'high quality news posts'. We'll see how things go for now. :)
-
Hm... Us posting news seems dangerous... Or (hopefully) It's restricted to project leads...?
-
You know it all goes through the content moderation system, right? If someone has news that's worth putting it on the front page, we'll approve it.
-
Yep, with the exception of hosted project leaders - they can post the news directly, for their own projects. :)
-
fs3 FAQ?
you werent gone that long steak...
-
I direct you to the front page, top news post, Hippo. :)
-
Well considering the specific question is a FS3 Frequently Asked Question the term is correct :)
BTW that particular question has been added to the HLP FAQ. I'm slowly adding the rest :)
-
Beauty. :) I'll post some news about that soon.

Okay, everyone. Here's an example of a crazily-linked news post. ;)
[q]G'day all. There's lots happening today, so I'll get right into it! I've just spent a few hours and added from the Array into the featured picture database - you may notice them up there at top right. But that means we need more FreeSpace screenies to shake it up! Shots taken with FS2 Open are particularly welcome. If you have anything to contribute, submit them straight into the screenshots section or post them on this thread.
Here's something else. I've just added 9 new reviews for FreeSpace 2. If anyone you know is debating whether to pick up FS from HOTU, this is where to direct them!
Our resident pseudo-admin, Kalfireth, is headed off to Portugal for two weeks. Wish him well, everyone - take care, mate!
GalacticEmperor has boosted the quality of the FS Port by adding support for shine maps in FS2 Open. Download the maps from FilePlanet, and add comments to GE's SCP thread.
My final bit of news for now is bittersweet. Everyone is familiar with The Babylon Project - it's legendary, possibly the largest and longest project existing in the FS community at present. But according to a couple of threads (1, 2) many of the crew members are having second thoughts about continuing work on TBP. Now I'm going to ask you guys all a personal favour. We all support this project - it hardly needs to be said. But now, it's time for us to all show just how much we love TBP. Get your posting hats on ladies and gentlemen, and let's show the TBP Team just how much we love them and want them to keep struggling on. Post at the official TBP forum, send along an email or PM to their main man IceFire - anything. Just show your support, everyone! Setekh out.[/q]
