Title: Interplay doesn't own the rights?!
Post by: Unknown Target on September 26, 2003, 09:57:01 am
Ok, I'm surprised there isn't a topic here about this! You have any idea what this means?! We could get an FS3!

But one problem, though: THQ now owns Volition, and if Volition is developing FS3, because THQ bought the rights (this is all conjecture), then we might have to settle for a dumbed-down FS3, made for both PC and console :(

Plus, it would throw ALL the work the community has done out the window.

Of course, if the rights are still in the air, and [V] is NOT developing FS3, then OUR projects might have a chance of being picked up by a publisher.

The phrase in the news article about FS2's success made me laugh. FS2 was no were near successful enough to warrant a sequel. Interplay's fualt of course, not the game's, but there you go. Sales are sales.

There was a topic on VWBB about it. Everyone who had anything new to say about it went there :)

I'm pretty interested, but as for a secret-project hope (as I talked to Sandwich about), I don't think it's worth holding any breaths. If it happens, that'll be possibly the best surprise ever, but until then - I'm looking to the SCP. :)

But I think Unknown Target has a point.  If they do (and I seriously doubt it), it's going to be a console game that probably will be ported to PC.  Everyone knows the money is in consoles right now.

But quit thinking FS3 is going to come out eventually.  It's not.  If anything, they'll make another space flight sim in another universe and leave Freespace to rest.

not reading the thread, I can already imagine what is said, so I'll just put my two cents:
I have the feeling that Interplay don't have those rights for a LONG time already, so it changes nothing. The guys who have those rights obviously don't use them.
Or maybe they've fallen into public property? :p

I just submitted this E-Mail to the United States Copyright Office:

Hello,
My friends and I were wondering if you could tell us who currently holds the publishing right for the Freespace series of computer games.  They were held by Interplay, Inc. but we would like to know who they sold them too.

Any information in this matter would be appreciated.

With any luck we'll know something within about a week.

I was curious as to whether they'd be making not exactly a sequel, but some kind of spin-off. Like StarCraft: Ghost.

That's cool.  I didn't even know what was going on.  I saw people posting the names of animals and similarly squeezed the SPAM bottle. :D

Personally, if [V] made FS3 for the consoles, I'd say "Screw it" and dissalow any knowledge that it was canon, and go with what was made to continue FS2, and NOT bother with it on console. If [V] would be willing to sell out it's fans to the console crowd, then they obviously don't deserve my money.

Not that I'm saying they'd do it, but, if they did.

I was fairly pissed off when I discovered that StarCraft: Ghost was a console-only project.  I was looking forward to another Renegade-like spinoff of a strategy game...

I think there's more chance of Descent 4 than of FreeSpace 3.  Because I'm writing it.
D'you think Interplay would be happy to market Descent 4 if I took a finished product to them?  Because I thought the main reason they weren't doing a D4 is because they'd have to fund the development team while the game was being made, and that wouldn't apply if I did this in my free time (eg. at University).

well, a lot of people will say:

IF IT AIN'T BY :V:, IT AIN'T DESCENT 4, erm, well, it doesn't rime as good with a four instead of a three. you get the idea.

and perhaps, i am completely unsure, but i don't give you that much of a chance.

Yes, I would. I'd rather have a Freespace 3.

That's like asking me if I'd like to play WingCommander: The RPG instead of having Wing Commander: Prophecy 2.

I mean for a console. There's all this talk with "OMG!!!11 They CoULd be MAEkNg FS3!!1 FOr GaY ConSolz!!1 VOliTion is evil!", wouldn't it be a lot better if they made a FPS for FS on a console, rather than *waste* it for our revered FS3?

meh.

after what happened (financially) to FS2, Freespace 3 is never going to happen.  get over it.  the SCP is the best thing we have going for us right now

At least that one will be made in our taste.

Now the opinion about what that is...is not so clear.
Still,...just hang in there.

Actually Interplay was supporting a small company out of Maine (Orbital Design Studios) who was interested in making Descent 4. Due to the development rights to Descent 4 belonging to Volition (as part of Parallax), it didn't go anywhere.

This is grossly simplifying the whole mess though :p
