Got Homeworld 2 earlier this week, and already i've nearly finished it.. i just wanted to know, what you guys thought of it...
Me.. after i remembered the complexities of the game combat, i found it quite easy.. ;)
Here's a few tips: (singleplayer)
Pulsar corvettes are more effective against frigates than bombers IMO.., group them with gunships for fighter cover..
however, bombers are good when attacking larger ships,(destroyers, BC's, Carriers, etc)
When you get ion cannon frigates, Build as many as plausable.. and set them up in "wolfpacks" even destroyers don't last too long against 'em;) escort them with pulsars and gunships for protection..
when you do get BC's... have fun, with the proper escort.. these things, are unstoppable.. (especially with the dreadnaught -spoiler-)
if you're stuck on a couple of missions, i could give you tips on how to pass it ;)

I've also nearly finished it, although mission 12 is a ***** with all those damn destroyers and battlecruisers coming at you.
Mission 4's probably been the hardest so far... and overall the game's far more difficult than the original Homeworld. I think it's also regressed a little in some ways, like auto-collecting resources and not allowing the player to play at his own pace. The graphics are amazing, of course, but if it was a choice of this or the original HW's gameplay, I'd choose the predescessor.

Nope. They're gone, and they put Marine Frigs in their place.
Anyway, HW2 rox. No question about it ;)

marine frigs are good, but compared to the other vessels, they have paper-thin armor.. and minimal defences.. guard them well... they're a hot target for the AI.. (like a mouse to cheese)

Yup. I do see that ICFs and bombers make good anti-cap combos, with gunships giving them a bit more fire support against fighters. Of course, battlecruisers on the other hand... ;7

I finished it after 2 days straight of playing :lol:
I looove the "last" mothership you get... heheh...
I also love playing as Vagyr in skirmishes, I love their ship designs have no idea why.

The Vaygr are awesome two words:
Hyperspace Gates
Really great in large maps, with engine upgrades and a full slew of strikecraft. (Assault, Bombers, and Lancers) Just swarm the enemy and when you start taking damage pull out through your gate. (take an indirect route so they won't know exactly where it is, and hide them in nebulas or dust clouds)
Also, there's nothing quite as crazy as a gunfight inside of a nebula with several ICFs and BCs firing their ion guns and causing huge lightening storms :)
Of course, it's also fun to interdict damaged Vaygr fleets moving through gates the way I mentioned earlier ;)

I never figured out how to connect hyperspace gates. Doesn't say how in the manual and there's no command in the special commands list for it. Care to explain how? :p

click one hyperspace gate, right click the other. it will say 'hyperspace connection established'
or something.
HW2 rules.
Somebody mode a Interceptor to Freespace 2 already :p

Umm, it is currently technically impossible to put ships into or modify existing ships in HW2 as the modding tools haven't been released. They have been pushed back at least a month due to "insufficient support", whatever that means.
As soon as the tools are released, I will get cracking. Hopefully it will just be a matter of simple conversion and compilation:doubt: as HW2 combines all the model and texture data into one file. But don't expect anything overnight, I don't even have a complete working site up yet, and little time to devote to the project.
I am determined to see the FS2 original campaign in HW2 however. :nod:

Whatever happend to the homeworld to FS2 mod theres a better question hehe. I'll give you a hand with your project when Relic releases the RDN tools if you want the help Liberator, I have been doing ship scripting since the original big editor came out :p
(ya know editing ship stats and crud, im just now expanding to ship modeling)

Hopefully we won't have to do any modeling just simple conversion to the HW2 format and weapons placement. The big bug is going to be the fact that I'm running 98se right now and any Maya version you like won't run on non-2000 machines. I'm going to upgrade before the year is out, but I've got to get a job first and that's proving problematic at best.

I feel your pain, finding a job right now is well... problematic is using a nice word i'll leave it at that :p
I will however be getting ahold of the freeware copy of Maya as soon as its available for download and my undertsanding is Relic will provide plugins for the modders so that should remove that headache. (And I run Windows XP)

I havent finished the campaign yet, but did play a few Skirmishes and a MP match with DragonClaw against two Hiigaren Comps. A very fun match. Even though i got killed first:D

I played the demo...I liked it. May buy the game later. Can't understand what monkeys have been hired to write reviews of the game however. They keep saying its too hard this, too hard that...the demo was easy (but enjoyable and cinematic) and the computer skermish opponents were a good match for me.
I enjoyed the challenges presented and I liked the interface.

sure the vagyr missile frigs can pummel your precious torp frigates.. but .. against pulsar corvettes, and ion cannon frigates.. they're pretty damn useless...:nod:
and note.. Heavy missle frigs are anti frigate.. and torp frigs are anti corvette..(i think)

Yeup it was good, but it sure wasnt hard. The ai just likes to swarm you big time, once you learn how to beat the AI swarm its cake. It was nowhere as bad as the gardens of kadesh in Homeworld. God that mission drove me mad the first few times i played it lol then i started capturing all the Ion Array and Multi Beam Frigates :)

okay.. here's what a decent-sized swarm of pulsars and gunships (as well as bombers and interceptors)...
i used just them to beat mission four.. and took out that vagyr destroyer that's hidden in that level.. i did however use flak frigs so the strike craft wouldn't have any trouble from enemy fighters and corvettes...

Actually I dont even use torp frigates and the vagyr still chew up my fleet (usually consiting heavily of destroyers, battlecruisers and a huge fighter and PCV presence) my battlecruisers never go down though thanks to resourcers taking up every latch point on the hull :lol:
and forget docking a infiltrator frigate i fly them in pairs :p they can shoot frigates off eachothers back. such a great combo. especially with fighter and vette cover. I usually park some special supises in the BC's too hehehe

Wolfpacks of Ion cannon frigs are generally a good idea, as they work best in a large group...
i took out 2 vagyr carriers one after the other uncontested using them...
after a while.. i just stopped using flak frigs all together, and concentrated on building ions..
and platforms.. don't bother moving them anyway.. just leave them when they come out of the mothership.. they can prove to be a nasty surprise to any would-be attacker.. ;)

on several missions i built the cap of ion platforms and setup a defensive field near my mothership and pulled the vagyr and my fleet into the ion field it worked GREAT whiped them out in seconds the ions even nailed the fighters =)

i built half & half of ion and gun platforms... very flexible defense that way...

:lol: sadly mistaken my man... Hiigarans are better than Vagyr. Play a hiigaran normal comp while you are Vagyr in shield. Easy win yes, but it takes a little while. Then play a Vagyr comp as Hiigaran, you can get 2+ destroyers in before the Vagyr can even build one, and a BC in before the game is over. For long outstretched games maybe Vagyr might be better, but other than that I don't see why people think Vagyr are better. They're just cooler :p
But yeah, match was great with darkage. We got pummeled by the 2 comps and he died first, I warped my fleet out to where I thought an enemy MS was, but wasn't there anymore. My command ship and shipyard got destroyed but I had 3 BCs with 8 squadrons of laser corvettes left. I systematically hunted down the enemy motherships and shipyards. I had to leave before I took out the 3 remaining battlecruisers one of the computers had left though... but I would have won. Very entertaining :)

actually its been clocked it takes about 5 minutes for a vagyr player to build a battlecruiser 8 for a hiigaran. =) it really depends on how well the person knows the tech tree though and how fast they can set up good mining ops.

Same amount of steps, but the hiigarans can do it faster last I timed it _myself_. Besides, the Hiigaran Battlecruiser is better, with its turreted stuff. Just build a few bomber squads, take out the Vagyr BC's missile launcher and engines, pull the BC where u want it, and just blast away and it can't do anything about it. With dissabled engines and the top ion cannon out(the only one targetable), the Hiigaran BC can still own stuff, whereas the Vagyr can't own squat.

yea the Hiigaran BC is deffinantly better no argument there I love that ship. :)

that and the Hiigaran BC has more range to it's weapons than it's vagyr contapart..
and besides.. i like the Hiigaran vessels :)

now.. my only real gripe with HW2 is the fact that there wasn't enough of it :p
that said.. i might set up a multi with somebody later on.. :D..

I have finished HW2 twice now.
A few comments...
- Flak frigates are useless. Fkak frigates are going down far too easily in fights. Torp frigates can fulfill both the roles of Flak and Ion frigs. Torpedoes can hit fighters pretty well too, although anti-cap ship torpedoes are not as deadly as ions.
- Someone said corvettes were useless (I think this was in the HW2 demo thread) but they are invaluable asset. It is surprising how anti-fighter ships have hard time shooting down 'vettes... Beware Vaygr Assault frigs...
- Why the heck Hiigaran destroyer has only on turret in it's bottom side...
- The mothership... Why on Earth it can't have proper defensive weaponry. I hated the Mothership's poor weaponry in HW1 and still it is as bad as before...
- I was hoping to see the Mothership's weaponry getting better through weapon research during the game, but noooo... :(
- It was strange there was tech improvements for speed and armor but no weaponry. Oh well...

I always use the Hiigaran logo, it kinda stuck with me after playing the first Homeworld the story was too good for my to abandon the Hiigarans :p
Mr. Fury agreed on all points all frigates need more armor! Especially flak but I find guarding them with a small detachment of destroyers helps nicely.
My first mod will be mothership Ion Beams :p

Bombers dont get owned by torpedo frigates (bommbers move faster)

Don't s'pose anyone knows what polycount (roughly) the various ships HW2 has are? Might buy that game tomorrow - not sure yet.

I thought the demo was merely OK, and I liked HW way more. I figured that was just 'cause I was in a different mindset with HW, but I went and played HW again, and, yep, HW is way better than HW2.
Although the whole fleet badge concept is nice. I'm hoping the full game will be better than the demo.
EDIT: The average poly count is around 2000 per ship, compared to 200 from the original.

Homeworld IS better than homeworld 2 no doubt.. Its hard to beat the story you had in that or the gameplay. If they had kept homeworld gameplay with Homeworld 2s story it would have been a better game.
I mean lets compare stories.. in Homeworld you new explorers to the stars just spreading your wings when your viciously attacked and your people slaughtered. You slowly learn there is more to your people than you ever realised and struggle to survive.
Homeworld 2. you simply fend off threat after threat agaist your race once again while being forced to go (immidately at a breakneck pace) to solve a mystery of the origin of the hyperspace cores..
Which sounds better to you?

No what I meant was if they had kept homeworlds gameplay and used Homeworld 2s story in HW2 it would have been a better game. sorry it wasnt clear

Overall Homeworld 2's gameplay has a much better pace and the interface once you get used to it is actually much better then Homeworld 1's. It's also easier to learn :)
What is funny is how in this game you have people swearing that a certain unit is useless until they find themselves being beaten by it.
