Title: Setekh trying to get the SCP to work...
Post by: Setekh on September 28, 2003, 09:29:18 am
Okay, so I download the 3.5.5 build, and everything is going fine. It tells me I need to get the launcher too, so I get it. Run the launcher, which tells me I need to have a 'VideocardFS2open' string in my registry, so I add that in manually. Then I hit run and it tells me that this build doesn't support DX5, and use the launcher to select DX8 or OGL. Okay...

But I've already got DX8 selected. (I'm running DX9.) Any tips for an oldie trying to get into this exciting new stuff for the first time? :o

DX8 thinks you have dx5 selected? Is that what you mean?

Bing. Under the Video tab, in the drop-down box for 'Graphics', I have Direct3D8 selected, but it keeps thinking I have DX5. And I was so keen too, seeing all this crazy stuff happening on the forums... :(

First make sure you've got the right exe selected. Then try resetting the launcher and pray ;)

I only have one SCP exe there - "fs2_open_r.exe", extracted from "3.5.5.zip"... but she just refuses to go. :blah:

Edit: This makes me post useless...

Try getting another build, like the yay or nay one, and try that?

Does it run without the launcher? I.E. direct clicking?

I'm guessing by your responses that this isn't a common problem. Bugger!

A few people had and still have problems with it. But the great majority of us haven't...

It could just be your registry settings, as that has been trouble for alot of people...

Maybe if I upload mine again?

I'm welcome to any suggestions. I really want to get this to work. :)

Make sure windows/internet explorer is off, I remeber reading about it resetting the launcher.

Yep, I saw that in the debug window that appeared. Had them closed all throughout, opened up the launcher and open exe through the run dialog.

http://freespace.volitionwatch.com/us/images/mods/snipes/fs2fixer.rar

Try adding that to your registry (Just delete the stuff specific to me, and/or my cmd line options)

OK, first double check that the launcher is pointing at your Open EXE. IIRC, mine was pointing at FS2.EXE at first...

Also, when I launch the game under DX8, it will complain that the build doesn't support DX5. It then opens another launcher. Running the game from the second launcher works perfectly, though I have to do this every time I want to run the game.

I think I have the same problem, though I've not really tinkered with 3.5.5 much.

EDIT:  Nope, works now - although it only seems that the DX8 option showed up after I connected to the internet for some reasons (first tried running offline).

Raa, your registry entries fixed it good. :) Runs now, though it's a bit jerky in-game. Specular looks awesome in the tech room, cheers... I can play around with it now, since it actually works. ;)

Heh, Fixed another one... That makes what, 3 people now? :D

Edit:  I know about the jerkyness, I can't look at capships without a significant drop in framerate, but it's most likely my system. It makes multi incredibly impossible... :(  KAzan did better than me in my mission... Rebel Intercept.

Nah, I get the same with capships (so far). What's strange is that fighters and bombers are noticably faster, while capships just grind to a halt... I'll keep fiddling. :)

ah well, i guess that proves the SCP builds are way too complicated to run. I wondert how a neewby that knows nothing about registry and stuff would do :doubt:

Venom: Pessimist. We'll figure something out.

Setekh: If you get a fix, tell me how you did it, I'd love to have normal gameplay again. As it is, I can't look at a Hecate, or Hatshepsut without it getting very choppy...

Pessimist? I'm talking about how it is NOW, not how it will be. For now, it's a pain to use. Why isn't the registry hack replaced already, for exemple?

Well, if someone feels like telling newb's to use my registry string (after I delete my FS2Dnet data), I have no problem with it...

To go on with the same idea: if your reg string works every time? Why isn't it included in the pack? Mmh?
There's efficiency, and there's mess. We have mess, here :p

Because I'm not an SCP guy... I only try to help here and there...

And yes, it does get messy here...

How many newbs get development builds of things? And, as has been noted, a fair number of people do NOT have this problem. I am sorry we don;t get paid, and we don;t have budget, so not everythig is polished. I'd hardly call this a mess :/ I'd call it active development.

THAT being said, time to ping bottom on that readme :)

Sorry it wasn't smooth Set, sounds like you got it working?

Didn't mean to get you mad... It just seems (To me, and I'm no one) that a few loose ends straggle around here and there...

You are doing a top notch job. If V spent as much time and effort on this, well... need I say more?

Guys, I had the same problem, but after reading some forum posts I realised that the dates on Launcher.exe and Launcher.rar were completely different.

You need Launcher.rar (and unpack it), this allows proper configuration of DX8 and OpenGL modes.  Launcher.exe is much older.

I have the same problem with my launcher...If I select D3D8, hit apply and OK - then when I open the launcher, D3D5 will be selected. With OpenGL, D3D8 is selected. With D3D5, D3D8 is selected. With Glide, D3D8 is selected.

The problem seems to be when it loads, since the registry is changed properly when I hit OK.
