I was productive today... made several models...
I'm gonna show off with two of them...the cold-space is down and so are the DOTA forums, so I can't do that there....
Here are they:
MILITARY OUTPOST
(http://www.swooh.com/peon/Trashman/Pics/MOutpost.JPG)
CIVILIAN STATION
(http://www.swooh.com/peon/Trashman/Pics/CivStation.JPG)
I did a quicky texture job on both of them....so?
-
Edit: Bah...
Not bad... Could stand to be a bit more complex, though.
Edit 2: Sinead O'Conner
-
Why does everyone need to comment my music taste?
I assure you, it's good. Probably better than any of yours!
The second one defenately need re-texturing...like I said..a quicky job...
-
1 - Um... what's better than any of mine?
2 - I have no problem with the textures, but it looks like a Terran battlecruiser in the front...
-
Bu-bu-bu-bloooocky :D :p
Other than that, they're pretty good. :)
-
Yoko Kanno
which OST?
-
You know, your stations are actually kinda nice..
-
The second one is VERY good.
-
The first one looks rather plain, in both model and texture, but the second one looks SUPER.
-
to be different, I prefer the first one, altho it does need more details.
The design of the second one doesn't make much sense to me.
-
I want them both.
-
The second is your best model to date, Trashy. Though I'd revamp the texture scheme a little; the Orion blue and Deimos green don't fit together. The orange Arcadia lights are OK. Try using some Zephyrus and Ganymede-style skins on it.
-
so, can textures be extracted from FS2 ??
-
Use VPView, available at the descent network website...
-
oh, cool.
-
Wow... and I tought the second one will be flamed!
Personally, I like the upper one..it has the BIG, Military feel to it...
Alltough the textures could be a bit darker...nah... It looks much better with a black background.
The second one I did in 30 minutes... texturing...10 minutes
It's kinda hard to find good textures, and I don't know s*** about making my own...
P.S. - Venom - Yoko Kanno RULEZ!!!! OST?
-
Trashman, I think the problem with the first one is that its simplistic textures (which do give it an imposing military feel, I'll admit) serve here only to accentuate the already extremely blocky and basic design of the ship/station in the first place. Those antennae on the first model, for example, could be a different texture to make them stand out against the hull. As it is, while I feel like there is a little complexity there, it gets completely lost in the uniform texture scheme. And all said and done, both of these things look like they are sitting in the neighborhood of 200-300 polys, which is low even by freespace standards. Try making them more detailed (insetting windows here and there, breaking apart large flat areas) and see how much more people like them.
-
the more areas mapped out, the better people can customize them and give them as much detail as the textures can... By the way I like both of them, but the second one's two non-dock pylons make it fel too symetrical for me... hw about making the widths smaller away from the docks and not making them both the same shape, diversify, different modules...?
-
Ahhh.... I will change some textures on the Military one....note that they will still be different shades of gray(and bluish or yellowish windows), but they will be more different.
The military Outpost actually has 756 poys (no turrets yet), the Civy one 306.... I will up the Civy ones polycount.... and give it more/better textures

First 'un looks like the Vanguard, but that ain't necessarily a bad thing.....
Second one is very good, but (as has been said) needs more details. Keep working on 'em! :)
-
K, haven't read the thread so I may be repeating other people: on the second one, make the pod at the end of each arm different. With the first one, invest polys in smothing those angles, and slap eye candy like antenae and radar dishes all over it. I imagine it will be greatly improved with some Arcadia-esque textures and turrets and stuff.
-
My thoughts exactly, but TrashMan claims that the first model is already a budget-breaking 750 polys. I think the key is learning how to optimize what you have, then worry about the details like smoothing. Though I think the military installation needs it. I just don't see how he got 750 polygons in there.
-
I did it in 3D Max and the converter automaticly triangulates it... No way around it... Anyway, it's actually more detailed than it seems on the pic.. I guess I can up the polycount to about 1000...:doubt:
Here is the update on the civy Station (4 pics):
The views:

Perhaps subobjects are inorder? Spread the polys round a bit?
-
What?!.....???
I did smooth some of the edges on the military installation, and I allso changed a few textures a bit... small changes really

808 polys? mmm
with something that big you should go for not less than 3000 polys if you want my opinion;)
the overall design could be interesting but what I see, both for textures and mesh, is a lod1 (if not lod2)....
-
Of course it's not LOD0....you don't see any turrets do you?
they will improve the overall apperance, for most of them will be big... I think that turrets will be 200-300 polys at least, so do the math... I might eventually smooth another face or two, but it's actually excellent the way it is...only turrets and other subobjets remain!:D
-
it's not a problem of smoothing edges, but adding details other than turretts
some control towers here and there, some mech elements, various elements, etc etc that will also give some more variations to the plating (and some more texture details/variation would be good).
it's a matter of complexity, well at least in my opinion and tastes
-
Add something to it,, a measly 800 something polys for a station = too low detail.
-
K.... the people had said theirs...I SHALL OBEY!:D
-
the civy station is nice
-
As always, I am a fan of your work. I noticed that the sides of the military installation looks a bit like the GTCol Columbus you did for me a while back. The civi installation though would fit in PERFECTLY, no word of a lie, into chapter 5 of my campaign. How about it?
-
You want everything I make, do you?
Oh, well... I see
