is there any possible way of raising the quality of starship debris and making it more persisant?...
it'd portray a much more realistic combat enviroment..;)
it's the small details in games that makes it better in gameplay terms..

You can currently have up to - what - seven debris lumps? What exactly do you want doing with them? Perhaps if they didn't shoot off so fast and the bigger bits actualy made a hazard in a combat zone... or if turrets on big lumps of ship still fired, that would be cool :D

I second that idea - I want really cool debris fields!!

well.. for starters.. after a major conflict, wouldn't there be bits of larger vessels floating around..?
-
Hm... the FS1 box said that turrets could be shott off, creating more obstacles... Possible to make he turrets actually drift away after they have been destroyed?
-
I'd say make it somewhat similar to starlancer, on death replace the ship with a wrecked version of it, have some larger pieces of the ship drift away slowly and spawn small misc debris here and there.

Dude, no-one's stopping you making enormous debris chunks. Rather than use the odd corner here and there as debris you could just carve the ship up in to sections. Like I said, the only problem with that is that they'd prolly fly off pretty fast and have no reall effect on gameplay.
Actually, thinking about it, I'm suprised people don't do thta already. Like, use the whole ship for debris, not just bits of it. Be a bit resource hungry, but there you go, my box is 1337

I do that.

hmm i was thinking...
why not make an option in FRED to make the debris kinda form its own field (kinda like an asteroid feild, only its a debris field that forms itself as the mission progresses...)

We are (or rather Vasudan Admiral is) doing that for TI. Dunno if Flipside's doing it too, but at least some of our ships work like that. And yes, it does make for some cool Debris.
-
It'd be easier just to place a fleet and blow them up before the mission in FRED, surely?(!) Only problem I can think of is making sure the bits aren't all flying away too fast....
-
Yeah, it was always a pet hate of mine that after a huge engagement, right near the end of the mission when you were ready to jump out... there was absolutely no sign of the battle ever having occurred. Lots o' debris, and make it more persistent - gets my thumbs up.

A (Semingly) simple Table modification ("Slow Debris" flag, or possibly a debris speed field) Or even a mission flag (Slow Debris) or Sexp (Set Debris Speed, high value low value). A sexp would probably be the best, that way it wouldn't break Backwards compatability, and it'd be at least partially modifyable at a mission designers level..
-
I would prefer a "slow debris" or "debris speed" flag that would go with the Object Editor. This would also be useful in conjunction with the "destroy before mission" flag to allow the player to come across ship debris, say in a nebula, without having the debris drift away from the area, or having to destroy the ship (self-destruct) during the mission and risk the explosion being visible. Something I'd also like to see, though it'd likely be much harder to do, would be to add a flag to make the debris of a ship, scannable. This would need to be limited to pieces above a certain size, but it would allow for some interesting possibilities in mission plots.
Later!

I'm ripping off StarLancer but...
How about a dense cloud of small metallic pieces exploding from capital ships once they are destroyed? Like in StarLancer
(http://www.lancersreactor.com/t/art/display.asp?area=shots&Start=84&File=15.jpg)
That is not really a good picture of it as the cloud was much more dense. And they looked like sprites... :)
