Okay, so I sit down at my desk, power up my laptop, plug in the modem cable and open up Internet Explorer and what do I see before me?
A page saying that my connection has been killed/blocked/nuked by NTL until I download a Blaster-Patch for WindowsXP and both a Blaster and Welchia scrubber.
Now, the page was at ntli.net, so I was immediately suspicious. I clicked my proxy on to bypass that page (I would've just gone on IRC or used e-mail to check with other people that it was real, but my IRC and E-mail ports have also been blocked), and went to NTLworld.com to check if it was real and not some hoax. Sure enough, there it was on the NTL homepage about a revised security thing and that people were being forced to download the patch and scrubbers. So I'm assuming it's all above board.
Now, I'm not a violent or easily annoyed man, but this is just ****ing retarded and I hope those bastards at NTL burn in hell. Not only have I already installed the patch via WindowsUpdate and ran the scrubber, I happened to have done so several weeks ago when the worm was actually in full effect. And I've also blocked the affected ports with my Magical Firewall of Hax0r Doom™.
And to make things worse, the morons didn't even include a nice little button on their forced warning page saying "I'm not a dumbass and already fixed my computer weeks ago", oh no, they make EVERYONE do it.
So, to summarise, I'm looking to buy some rockets, a few grenades and 10 loyal mercenaries. Or at least I will be once the crappy-ass scrubber is finished it's 20 hour task of searching my hard-drive.
They've totally killed hundreds of thousands of peoples connections to fix a worm that was first counter-acted months ago. Kudos for the quick response.
This is the most retarded thing I have ever seen happen on the net, even surpassing RichardSimmons.com.
*wanders off to switch to a BT ASDL connection*

Wow... 4 posts and a rant...

Yes, I'm a quick learner, despite what the British Board of Education may tell you.
-
NTL = National Transcommunication Ltd. ??
i'm not british but i looked it up. sounds pretty stupid though :blah:
-
you wanted some mercenaries? ;7
-
mwehehehehe :D that's rather funny :D
-
No, really. Tell us how you really feel.
-
NTL suck, get BT or anything not NTL. :P
-
That's all well and good, but NTL like their monopolies. Theirs is the only broadband serivce in this 'city'. To be honest, it doesn't suck too many eggsies although last year they put a daily 1gig cap on everyone's downloads without announcing the fact publicly... And if you don't pay your bill within about three minutes of receiving it they bump your modem down to 128k, then 56k, and so forth...
-
I hate NTL. We used to get free 24 hours internet access when we had phones via them, and they changed it so we had to get bloody cable TV to be elgiable. SO I'm stuck on a crappy Freeserve after 6pm connection. Bleh.

Been on Blueyonders broaband service for three years now, couldn't fault it in the slightest, currently eligible for the 2mbps connection but that's £60 a month which is a little out of our collective (everyone on the LAN pays an equal share) price range.
-
Oo... interesting. I shall investigate. NTL charge 50 for their 1mbps, what are Blueyonder charging?

£36 of your finest pounds but you have to be in a telewest catchment area.
-
Aaargh, we're not elegible. Hey, you know Jolt are doing broadband now? I shall go check them while I'm in the mood...
-
Where I live, I get about 5-6mpbs for $50 a month.
(Not in Britain :D)
-
NTL charge £36 for 1M broadband where I live.
-
WTF? Where do you live then?
-
Kent. I suspect it is part of a package option since I also get Cable TV with them.
It might be worth calling them up. I called up to enquire about the cost of the 1M broadband and found that I could get an upgrade from 512k and extra channels for £3 LESS than what I had been paying :D
-
What in the hell? They advertise 1M for 50 squids everywhere I look. I must investigate... though to be honest I don't want to poke them cos they never charged us for our first six months of broadband and we're hoping to God they never find out...
