Please be honest here. I am curious.
Did you survive the last mission the VERY first time you played it?
Being killed by a Shivan ship doesn't count. I mean 'to survive' only after the nova started. :)
-
I got killed good. 'Twas more than ten clicks from the node when the supernova began, I didn't even have a chance. :D
-
i had an aries class.. sure i survived the shivans....
but... i was burnt to a crisp.. ;)
-
I was already in the node when the shockwave started... don't remember why, but anyway, I didn't have far to go :D
-
i survived the shivans the first time...
but the civillians sure as hell didnt :D
-
Made it the first time:D just in time though:D
-
I made it within meters of the node before the shockwave hit. :)
-
I was under fire from my wingmates after seeing the Saths and deciding it was time to defect. Not a single GTVA ship made it out of the system. Mwuahahahahah!!!!
-
I actually made it the first time, I was chasing a Manticore or something that flew into the node. Can't remember the specifics, as it was a long time ago (well before I discovered MODing, or HLP)
EDIT: voted for yes, although I wasn't a good pilot. Just got lucky:D
-
no. I tried very hard, tho.
-
Lol, I was at least 6 kloms from the node when the shockwave hit :D Survived the Shivans, tho, hehe :)
-
nope, i was about 2 clicks away from it when it hit me tho...
*waits for Grey Wolf 2009*
-
I blew up at the EXACT moment I hit alt-j to escape. Probably less than a second from safety - if I'd thought to ramp up my engine energy, I'd have made it :)
-
I made it no problemo with about 10 seconds to spare. Though the second time around playing the campaign I got toasted, a few times.
-
I voted NO. I will have all you know however that I was there with time to spare and was hit with a random occurance of the jumpout bug where I couldn't jump out at all. With little or no time at all I obviously couldn't jump and bammo was killed. Looked awesome however :)
-
No, because I am a cool pilot.
I stayed behind to escort civilians to their death.
-
 i jumped out with 15 seconds to spare.
-
Didn't survive first time. Shivan: Do I smell Terran Barbecue?
-
I was basically right next to the jump-node when it happened, so I was even able to sit there and watch the star expand and everything. :D
-
I got to see Capella up close...
-
The funny thing about that mission is you're just flying along, blasting shivans and suddenly this "Supernova Warning" pops onto your screen with a timer, and I'm thinking "uh, what's that?". And then you wait about 5 seconds, until later finally Command says 'oh damn, get your ass to the node people'. And then you think "yeah, that's what I thought it was . . . oh ****"
-
I lucked out and was nearby, plus I was in my trusty Perseus, so I was able to motor out of there
-
i was about 6km from the node in the brick formerly known as the aries. it sucked ass.
-
I was chasing down some Shiven bombers when the nova started. I turned to the node and tried to make it but didn't.
-
I think I was too ubsy blasting bugs to leave
-
yes and actualy capella didnt blow up until all the allied ships had left. or most of them. It was some sort of bug where if you dont kill a certain ship capella doesent blow.
-
Unfortunately for me, I was flying the Ares and was moving very slowly (quickly for an Ares since I diverted everything to the engines) towards the node. If I had 5 more seconds I would've made it for sure =(
I found it hilarious hwo the cutscene said that I chose to stay behind to save the civilians. I was like, "No, I was running my tail off trying to get out and got burned"
-
Every time I play it, I always seem to get toasted as the jump-out sequence is about to start. Still, that's my fault for always choosing to fly the Potato...

heh? first time I hear about that bug :p
-
actually happens to me all the time.
And no.

Ohh ...49 votes?
It is more than I had expected.
Opening a new 'be honest' thread. :)
-
Died good, but took the damn bugs with me! :D
-
I actually made it to the node (in a mega heavily damaged Perseus) soon as the counter started I just ran.
Then the ending went on about "Alpha 1 staying behind" I was, like, who, me?! :)
-
I mentioned this before i think...
When the notice came, i thought " one more bomber...lets see it blow to smithereens..."
When it blew, i looked up at the node which was 5 Kilometers out with only 30 seconds to go.
-
i was about 9 kilometers from the node when the star went nova. i high tailed it for the node but was still icing shivans on the way. thus, i was about 1 kilometer off when the wave hit. i liked the ending that resulted since it struck me as appropriate and never replayed the mission.
-
:welcome:
-
I *could* have made it to the node..... but unfortunately i spent at least 15 seconds completely still, just staring at the sun and watching it bigger, going "wow... it's getting bigger". Then i tried to get to the node and i dissintigrated.
-
I always seem to get there 5 seconds before the thing blows...which is when the cutscene cuts in...

My jump drives were powering up, I was just about to enter the jump node (the blue tunnel was just begining to open) when it hit and....BOOOOOM

Ohhh .... it is called as 'If I could make a jump as quickly as the Ai does, I would have made it'.
-
Wait a sec... CAPELLA GROWS BIGGER? I've never noticed that, I never have time to use rearview.
-
That's not Capella, that's its sun. :)
-
I was actually on the Warp-Out scene, when it hit me and killed me, that REALLY confused the Engine!
Flipside :D
-
I was blasting Shivans left and right about 8 klicks from the node when the warning came in. I boosted max power to engines, but only got 4 klicks when the shockwave hit.
That´s what i get for flying the Ares. Good fighting ship, but not so good for fleeing colossal, force-of-nature-size walls of fire moving at close to the speed of light.

The tech description did warn you, you know... ;)
[q]As a result, the Ares handles like a potato.[/q]
-
I had the sense to fly the Erinyes. I can't stand ships that handle worse than the Magnum-AHT from Descent 3...
When the supernova warning popped up I was about 5 klicks out, and the first thing to cross my mind was, 'Thought so'. After all, if eighty massive warships have converged on a star and are pumping a lot of power into it, something dramatic is gonna happen. I'd predicted the supernova about 3 missions previously...
So I ramped my engine power to the stops, hit my burners, and made a bee-line for the node. At one point, a Shivan got in my way and I shot it to pieces without even changing course. Got to the node with about 15 seconds to spare, and jumped out successfully.
Outro movie was pretty cool.

IIRC, (fs1 is immune :p ) its that when you press alt-J, your jump drives power up, but immediately as your speed hits 40M/s, it says "jump drive de-activated"... It sometimes tke 20ish minutes to get out of the mission... (without pressing Esc or Shift-Esc)
-
Although I've only played FS2 once I got out first time fine, quite easily too. Although I was in a fast ship, not a heavy fighter or some such.
Stupidly I'm gonna say that I can't remember what the ships name was! It was the Pegasus I think. What ever replaced the Valkyrie.

I must be the only person who chose to fly the perseus intercept fighter. After all, it was mostly bomb intercept, and what fighter does it better?
Needless to say, the perseus got me to the node with tons of time to spare. Though, I do sometimes question the gravity factor that must be put on the pilot when flying a perseus with engines at full and afterburners going on and off
but, capital ships survive going in and out of subspace at those speeds that they do...
-

I typically choose the default fighter or something similar for the sake of playing the mission in the way that the designer had intended. Which isn't to say its wrong to fly anything else of course. I'm not the greatest fan of the Perseus, its got nice speed but when my back's against the wall like in those last few missions I'd like a big loadout and thats something the Herc and brethren can provide. Just fire and forget because there's more on the way.
-
I just never turn down the Erinyes whenever I have the choice. I mean, 8 Kaysers... come on, they say "power" in any language. :D

Beware of that. I frequently choose a non-optimal default loadout for my missions just to make things harder for people not paying attention to the mission briefing :D
Nothing major but little things like not including trebs for a bomber intercept mission :)

Especially Braille...
