Title: Enterprise
Post by: Liberator on October 01, 2003, 10:24:19 pm
I've refrained from starting a thread about this until we we're further into the season.

Anyway, I am happy to say that the new season of the newly renamed Star Trek: Enterprise is finally on the air.

Firstly, the episode quality is WAY up.  They aren't pulling any punches either, this is Star Trek.  It is much closer to TOS than anything previously.  The writing and camerawork is much better.  The whole thing with the Xindi as a background gives the whole thing a B5 kind of vibe.

Now for the bad stuff, and there is a bit, not as much as you'd think but anyway...

1.  Scott Bakula's performance as Capt. Archer is hit or miss, he's coming off as a schizophrenic Capt. Kirk/the guy from The Shining.

I don't know if it's supposed to be like that but it's mildly annoying.

2.  They're developing the Xindi sub-plot too fast for my tastes.  They should make it play out over the course of a couple of seasons at least.

That's it, I look forward to your thoughts.

The first (two?) seasons kinda sucked. This one is a little better, although the episode where they transformed into the things was gay. Is there like a rule in each Star Trek series where the main crew have to transphorm into creatures that have no recollection of who they were before?

I do agree that it was a rather weak episode, but unlike the rest of Trek at least this time it's not something that was forgotten about overnight. (this episode had the captain still recovering)

With the exception of "Extinction", this Season so far has been pretty much top-notch. There are countless nods towards the original Star Trek style including the use of characters, combat scenes, aliens and musical score. Anomaly was really "out there" with the good pacing. The Xindi was quite forgettable but I loved the use of the MACOs and that alien with the Breather. Extinction was run-of-the-mill Sci-Fi, it could've been done a bit better. But in terms of Enterprise episodes it wasn't too bad at all. As for last nights episode, Rajiin, well, I was almost stopping for breaths ! The action scenes are what got me rolling the most. Come on, that girl can kick-ass. Bring her back, please !

SPOILERS

Also did anyone notice how the Xindi Reptile suits looked like the leather-clad ones from Nemesis? But - I thought back to Nemesis and noticed something, the fight scene between the MACOs/Crew and the Xindi was MUCH BETTER than the boarding party in Nemesis. Some creative use of weapons including the Xindi bug CGI, and that's gotta be one of the first times I've seen aliens blow through the ship to get in, instead of just waltzing through the door. :D

UPN sucks, tho. I stopped watching Enterprise when they went into that nebulae, after those guys that shot the big laser thingy at Earth, and the Klingons attacked them. After that UPN decided to play, like, the 10th episode of the entire series over again. I was, like, :wtf:

Because the episode with Earth getting attacked was the end of season three and they run a thing called re-runs? :)

The first two eps were watchable, but I must say, that having seen only 8 episodes of any other trek show out there, plus about 10 or so of Enterprise, I feel let down. I mean, with all the hype, I expected at least something half as good as Babylon 5 or... I dunno, the Practice in terms of drama. While ST:TNG sometimes lived up to that, the two eps I saw of Voyager made me avoid the series like a plague, and Ent is, while improving, still nowhere near the quality of good television (notice word Television, not SF), like 24 or Practice.

I'm not going to compare it with B5, which holds above any US production in TV OR cinema, aside from Lord of The Rings, 2001, Godfather and a few others.

So it's becoming decent this year? I might start watching it again then. I had stopped watching after the first few episodes of the first season.

Until they completely remake it without all the inconsistencies, I'll not be watching it.

Let's see, in the first 4 eps of Season 3 we've had:
  • Earth in tatters
  • Trip going nuts over his sisters death
  • Cool MACO action
  • The ship being disabled numerous times
  • The introduction of the series' major bad-guys
  • Jolene Blalock using words like 'sexual' and 'intimate' while dressed in form-hugging cat-suits and silky blue pyjamas
  • Implied lesbian luvin' between Hoshi and that Rajiin woman
  • Archer trying to blow someone out of an airlock for information
  • The complete absence of the Suliban
  • Porthos being cool as ever
  • Archer basically going nuts[/b]
It's getting more and more like TOS with each episode. All the prime-directive, moral-superiority garbage is going out the window and Archer's getting more "Screw dimplomacy, just shoot them and steal their stuff".

I can't wait for Kor or someone to show up in a BOP and start talking about how he's gonna kick Archers ass, then getting the snot pummelled out of them by wave after wave of photon torpedoes.
