How to make shine maps for lightwave?

and i mean how to make them so that they wouldnt make the ships look completely flat?

specular maps, I suppose, like in max.
specular maps are greyscale textures, white is really reflective, black isn't at all. shades of grey are inbetween, obviously.
You probably know it, but as a reminder, opacity and bump maps works the same: for opacity, black is 100% transparent, white 0%, and for bump, black is deep ( hole ), white is high ( bump ).

An easy but lazy way is just to use an emboss effect on the map in something like psp or photoshop.  Probably look crap, mind you - but it'll give you an idea how it works anyways.  besides which, I've been using that way for ages, albiet out of sheer laziness.
