Title: request, minimal system requieremnt build
Post by: kasperl on October 03, 2003, 01:11:56 pm
would it be possible to make a special build of FSO made specificly for low end machines?

my litle brother as a p266, and 64MB ram, and no real graph card. he can run FS2 as it is now, but only with extremely low graph options.
would it be possible to change some things and get FSO to run easier and less resourvce intensive then FS2? i am not asking for glowmaps and stuff, i am asking for basic FS2, enough to point and shoot and see what happened.

Why??? Just run vanilla FS2 in low detail.

i was hoping that the SCP would bring some gain in speed.

in low detail you ca't see what ship is what. and in anything higher you can;tmove when someones shooting.

Just use the command line options to disable the fancy stuff.  Or use an earlier build.  Or wait for HT&L.

will HT&L speed up the game even for older machines?
I thought it would grant speed gains only for the GPUs wich support it

Doesn't pretty much every Geforce era-and-older card have some form of HT&L support?  I'm not sure, but I'm sure my old MX200 had some basic support......

What if FSO took all essentials not to the RAM, to the Winchester. It would be very  speed-friendly :)

what i am asking for here is simple, trying to get FSO run on a lower end machine then FS2.

also, if i run linux, would it lower sys reqs? in a lot of other software you see that the linux version runs on half as much as the windows one....

Windows is a HUGE system hog. If the linux version worked you would almost certainly see an improvement. The problem is does the linux version work?

Probably not, since it uses DirectX for a lot of things. That'd be a ***** to recode...

dunno, actaully, i thought they had it fully working, but then it went silent.

also, if it does work, someone should investigate this possibility:
Knoppix or something like it, without any apps, just FSO, and only a floppy for the pilot files. that way you can play FS2 anywhere, even in school, as long as the comp can boot from floppy disk or CD.

Now that would be cool. :D

Not really since the virtual memory on your 'winchester' will be many times slower than your physical memory. Virtual memory is only there to support physical memory.

Now someone remind why HDs used to be called winchesters. Something to do with the rifle, IIRC...

indeed.

i can think of something great for lan party's now.

a client disk for every pc, and one server cd, all set up with network ip's and everything. you keep that bunch of cd's with you to every lan party you go to and oyu can start playing FS2 MP by just inserting the disks and rebooting.

hell, if everybody brought their joysticks, i think i could get the school network to play FS2 MP.

I forgot about speed, yeah.
About winchester: HD as merevlemez(-Hard drive in hungarian translation letter by letter) is not as often used as 'winchester' in Hungary. This is why I call it 'Winchester' rather than Hard Drive.
