Alrighty, figured this was a good topic to bring up - which servers are free and which are reliable download servers?

Discuss :D

www.swooh.com!

www.ipowerweb.com Not free but I'm using it for my "sound image" website job. So far no complaints just compliments! Free domain with 1 year prepaid hosting @ ~$7.95/month.

Swooh is pretty good - and I like the ethics they stand for. Kinda. ;)

:D

I'm curious as to how you know Swooh is pretty good... are you saying that based on experience?

"kinda"?  tell me what you don't like about it ;) :D

Not based on direct experience. ;) Based on what I've seen from around here - from what I can tell, there are a remarkable number of HLPers registered with Swooh, and apart from occasional downtime (nothing I'd write home about), the service is admirable. :)

As for 'kinda', my only gripe is not actually ethical but pragmatic. My friend Jack (JFK on these forums) tells me he's been trying to register for the past month, and hasn't heard anything back. That's all. :p ;)

yes, i agree with you on the registration issue... we were right on top of things until our inbox got full, and when it went over the limit it screwed up, and we've only recently got it working again ;)

we do encourage people if they want an account to ask for one on the forums, because i usually check that multiple times a day and i can get it for him then :)

But if he wants an account, tell him to PM me, and i'll hook him up.  remember that was how i told people on HLP to do it in the first place ;)  yeah, get him to PM me.

Fileplanet?  yeah, if you have one of those accounts where you have to pay then i've heard it's pretty good, but for the average (non-paying) user i don't think it is :)

Thanks, Stealth - will do. Don't know where he's been lately though, hasn't been online for quite some time as far as I can tell.

yeah well let me brief you on the whole story now, since you were out at the time ;)

Swooh was mainly a private server, for the admins to use and a few of their friends (myself included) shared it.  then i saw how many people on HLP were needing (desperately) places to store webpages, and particularly:  images.  so i bought swooh a new (160 GB) hard drive, to use to give accounts to people.  with loads of extra space, us four admins opened hosting to everyone who needed it...

so without HLP's community, swooh's "hosting" would not be in existence ;)

And just for the record, swooh's not really geared (bandwidth wise) to serve as a file-server
