I think this new feature may have a setback:
It makes the one-year old threads easily bumpable without doing any search. Guests may find something they would want to comment, register, and bump up an extremely old thread for his first post. Do you think I am right about this?
-
There's a warning on old threads that should prevent this I think
-
Well it won't prevent it a such, but at least we can sugar our flames with a 'you were warned' disclaimer
-
We had a discussion about this while implementing it, and the warning was found sufficient deterrent. If someone still posts after reading it, he must have a really good reason.
-
What feature? Where?
EDIT: Oh, that thing at the bottom of t3h main p4g3.
-
/*assuming I have extrapolated enough about this*/
maybe you could have those threads auto-locked for a day or two
-
Oooh, one of my old art threads is on it.... :D
I like the idea
-
something I never quite understood: what's the problem with bumping old threads? Do they carry some sort of disease? Sounds more sensible to me to bump an old thread than create a new one dealing with the same topic ( and when some dude asks for something, people will tell him to search for old topics  something's seriously flawed there ).
-
/me looked at the trick
/me found the old practical jokes thread
/me likes, a lot
-
One problem with bumping old threads is that quite often you can read quite a distance down them before you realise that they are actually old (which I tend to find quite annoying).
A bigger problem is that they can sometimes reignite old flame wars.
-
But one of the advantages of thread bumping is that newbies arrived after the thread had sunk down can write their opinions about the topic it is about.
Disadvantages: Some of you(excluding me, and others who are not against thread bumping) may post 'Why did you bump this?' message. I don't know why is it so disadvantageous, maybe I am having mood for typing :)
-
Thread bumping was really bad when Setekh was gone; his avatar is really noticable and people would think "Oh Steak's back!" before realizing that the post was made over a year before. It is also annoying to see the same really old topics float up again and again. I think that the best way to bring up new thoughts on old issues is to READ the older thread and then post a new thread refering back to the old one with new thoughts thrown in. Just makes more sense to me.
And if you're just going to quote someone and say "Yeah, I agree" then you are REALLY wasting everyone's time.

well, I don't, so it doesn't make much sense to me ( arf, that's a killer, how to argue with that? :D ) :p

I suppose that can be prevented easily ( say, after a post has reached a certain age, the text in it turns red, et voila ).

I had no idea I caused so much trouble in my absence... sorry... :nervous: ;)
Well, now that I'm back, you can bump to your heart's content. :D
-
Don't say that...

Poser. :p
-
that HLP 1 year ago box was good idea i think:)
-
Personally, I love it. Great reminder of our history... which we kinda have now, being a couple of years old now. :)
-
Can't wait to do a "One Decade Ago..." :D
-
I can wait... ;)
That said, it'd be pretty awesome if we make it that far. :)
-
God help me if I'm still here. :nervous:
-
God help us all if that's the case. :p
-
I'm not worried personally. I don't think HLP could contain me for another 10 years. ;)
-
no, in ten years time we won't need a 'a decade ago' box; in ten years time, hlp will have taken over the universe and poor kids in school will have to learn about its humble beginnings and how it managed to conquer everyone else.
-
That's a... scary thought. Well, let's create a history we'll be proud of then, shall we? ;)

especially how we won "the battle of Silicon Valley":p
-
Hmm, ten years from now... I can see myself here.
-
me too, i might actually be able to mod by then.
-
by then i am 37
-
Talking about decades here ...
I have doubt FreeSpace would survive even three more years. :doubt:
I am not an optimistic man by default.
-
By ten years time I wonder how much of this will all be related to FS at all. The truth is, though, that HL is the biggest forum by a long-shot, and there is hardly any FS discussion in here. While I believe that FS still has quite some time left in it - maybe not in the form that it is now, but the universe itself has a lot of potential - I think the best thing about HLP is the atmosphere, which is a result of the consistency of the members to be helpful, skilled (after an amount of HLP 'exposure'), enthusiastic, and fun-loving. That stays, HLP stays.
-
The only reason(s) I see HLP dieing or no longer really doing FreeSpace modding, is if we *gasp* get real lives (think TCO only more extream, not that getting married and possibly raising a family is a bad thing TCO).
Can you guy's see yourselves acting like guy's do with football our someother sport? I.E. one of us talk/teaching or sons/daughters about FS modding? :sigh: Such happy thoughts.

Well, I am hoping I'll get married and have a family eventually - and you'd better believe I'm going to grow them up as the next HLP admins, dudes. :D
Hmmm... you know, I'd never thought of doing that before. Heh, old-school... ;)
-
i am married and raising family but still i stay here this because this place is very nice all thanks to (Setekh,Kalifireth,Styxx, maeg, shrike,Carl and Sandwich):)

It's nice to have you here too, Gloriano. It's the people, I'm telling you. :)

It's a privilege to admin this place, trust me. ;)

If this place survives that long... wow. That'll be an achievement. :)

I just finished reading Lord of the Flies and it has now convinced me that anything will deteriorate solely due to Human Nature.
-
Tell me, I just started it for english, does it get better than the first 30 pages? :doubt:
-
Depends on what you like. If you like mantally dark and scarry you will love the end. The begining is a bit tedious but its a quick read.
-
I just think the intro is rather lacking for.. introducing the story. Of course, I'm only 32 pages into it, so shoot me.
-
My trust in human nature has been severely depleted this year. While we are reading Lord of the Flies in geography, we are also reading Animal Farm in LA.
-
Heh, I also just finished Animal Farm. Good book, probably my favourite in the last two years. A lot of what I liked though was the connection to history. It was great in that it was a moral story in it's own right, but it also portrayed part of real life (Ironically stupid) a long with it.
But as many of my classmates discovered, without knowing the connection, 'it's just a stupid book about talking animals....'

Heh, I suggest you read the newspapers, then your trust in human nature will be completly gone :p
-
The general suckiness of human nature is half the reason why I'm a Christian...
-
All life sucks, just accept it and find ways to prove the point.
