I have discussed the idea with a few TVT afficionados on PXO and most agree that it would be a good idea to organise a good old style tournament for FS2 so here is what is being suggested :
Note: this is not meant to compete with the Fleetwar initiative which I support, but to offer an alternative to players who like a different type of competition than node or strategy wars.
It will be a more skill based classical tournament like a sport world championship. Something simple, not dependant on V or any skilled programming. It is meant to be manageable with just a pen, a piece of paper and bit of goodwill
Suggested rules
- All participants sign in before a deadline
- Participants can be individuals or a team of 2 : to be decided
- Participants are divided into pools. Participants in the same pool fly all possible matches against each other.
- All matches are played in 2 rounds on each other’s host choice.
- A round win grants 1 point, a loss 0. Therefore matches result can be 2-0 1-1 or 0-2.
- When all pool matches are played, points are added up. The 1st two qualify for final stage (playoffs)
- Playoffs to be fought in a final pool or direct elimination: to be decided
- Matches are played on PXO, FS2 unmodded version, classical TVT validated missions : final list of allowed missions to be agreed
- At the end of each round, each team take a screenshot of results and keep it just in case of protest.
- Opponents agree on scheduled day and time. 15 minutes delay maximum strictly unforced. A no-show leads to the loss of 1 round.
- Cheating or misconduct (flaming or verbal provocation of any sort) leads to disqualification.
Organisation:
A tournament lasts 1-3 months depending on number of participants. Once a tournament ends another one can be organised.
The tournament is managed by an admin committee. As a start it will be probably run by several ppl from various experienced squads (DW, SSC, FF, SOR, BDHR…)
It is managed through a website/forum. Players post matches arrangements and results (if needed it can be hosted by a site like this: http://www.clanbase.com )
Admins browse forum and add points up. They settle disputes or disqualification decisions on a majority vote.
Permanent ranking:
At the end of each tournaments each participant gets points corresponding to his result. Cumulative points determines his position on the ranking that will be displayed on the website or forum.
Squad ranking
The tournaments are not squad based (so that ppl that are not in a squad can participate) However, each participant can fly as freelance or affiliated to a squad. Squads with at least 4 participants (or 2 teams of 2) qualify for squad ranking. After each tournament the points of the 4 bests of each squad are added and determines the squad ranking.

The above is a summary of what I gathered from various discussions + a bit of my own imagination but these rules can be amended or fine-tuned according to the suggestions of the majority so feel free to share your comments.
The major decision to make now is : do we want it to be a single (1v1), double (2v2 with fixed teams) or “double surprise ” (participants are single individuals but fly 2v2 matches in variable -random ?- teams) tournament ?
If you have no comments but like the idea.. just bump the thread to show your support.

And oh I forgot to pimp about the best FS2 squad evarrr !!!

I'd suggest a series of 1v1 matches, the top 8 players are selected from best and least skills. for example. #1 teams with #8, #2 with #7, etc etc. The 2v2 matches take place and whichever team wins plays a 1v1 and whoever wins that takes championship. :p
Yeah... :p
-
But then you will often wind up with the best playing the worst in the series final, and that's just not fair. You would need to do it in some way that all four test their skills against each other.
-
I'm in, some of us get to show these modders how to fly
-
it sounds pretty good, but couldn't all of this be automated?
once we have the FW code working, it shouldn't be too hard to modify it to get this to work too.
-
Getting it automated will be a nice to have but not absolutely necessary.
We have already a good number of participants now so we will probably start soon. So if anyone else interested here it will be time to let us know.
We will post link to the official dedicated webpage and forum as soon as it is up.

what about people being able to make there own ships/skins, there would need to be some sort of aproval proces but I think it would be incredably cool
