Title: Background Debrice
Post by: Lightspeed on October 04, 2003, 04:57:44 pm
Especially in nebulas, i think we could greatly improve FS2's current debrice parts (the little spinning grey blobs).

If you look at this extract from Freelancer
(http://www.smalltimerivalry.com/sschost/scriptlightspeed/SCPrequest.png)
you'll see some little debrice stuff which glows and leaves behind a little smoke trail. It will only be seen if you're really, really close to it (like the grey stuff in FS2).

If we could add effects like that to FS2 we could make nebula mission look even better ;)

hmmm... what about adding a blue sun and an asteroid field with small asteroid chunks floating around. With the fs_open program the asteroids will then look shiny!:D

Just a thought.

no, cause FS2 does not have asteroid chunks. Its just a boring 4x4 pixle ani displayed at close range.

What i would like to see is some actual little asteroid bits which can be set to glow and leave a little smoke trail :)

Also another thought:

Could it be possible to get glowpoints to fade in and out instead of just switching on and off abruptly?
If they would fade, and look a bit like a lense flare instead of looking like a little white/red/green circle, they could look extremely good on some of the models :D

Actually thats just regular space crap floating by, asteroid chunks are smaller and smaller pofs.

Forget the lens flare... that can be done by anyone willing to make a new bitmap.  But can they be made to fade in/out?  I.e. have a specified fade time, during which the image scales from 50% size and 0% optipacity to 100% scale and optipacity?

Okay, to put things more clearly:

exactly the thing I asked for :)
The lense flare thing was actually asking for someone to make a new bitmap ;)

yes. I mean this stuff here:

I think that if we'd replace it with little chunks (which you can apply effects like glowing, or leaving trails, etc like in the Freelancer image) it would look ... a lot better :D

Indeed it would, I agree. BUT, i think it would be a resource drain when rendering the scene in game.

It's no performance loss on Freelancer, so why should it be on FS2? ;)

-edit: oh, and for older systems you can always turn off the thingy :)

Most of the nebulae in FL gave me the feeling of being underwater not in space. Especially in those green clouds of microbes FL looked like some budget version of Aquanox.

anyway, about the debris:
wouldn't be particularly difficult to allow them to spew particles, I suppose?
