Title: Favourite language?
Post by: Setekh on October 06, 2003, 07:07:19 am
I'm just curious. I just like the names of certain languages, particularly French (studying WW1 for a year was partly responsible for that). You can take into account how easy it is to learn (as we found out a few threads ago :p), how it sounds, how the letters look like, whatever. Try to include a reason. :D

(I only included the languages that popped into my head just then... I'll add another one if you can think of a major one I've missed. :))

well, for conversations, it ought to be English, for reading, English too. and for writing storys,English.

but for making something sound cool, Latin. and for making things look like your smart, write in the Greek alphabet.

btw, when i opened this thread it was about programming languages.

English, cos I speak it.
German, cos it's really easy to read and speak (spellings are pretty much phonetic, so there's no confusion. It's not a very pretty language though, like French is).
Japanese, cos it's really weird (it's not a Germanic language, like most of the others, so you can't really compare it to them - except Chinese, of course). :)

For a spoken language I like Japanese, mainly because it's my primary language.

Even if you have to take a few more words to say it... *grumbles about the Greeks having four words for distinct type sof love* ;)

I could swear they had five words for love.

The serious answer to the question is Japanese, German and English. I love the melodic, elegant sound of Japanese. German is just terribly sexual to me (I don't know why) so I like it. English... well, English, becuase of its absurd grammar, silly mechanics, foolish spelling and general ambiguity lends itself to mad poetry in a way that I think few other languages can match. Poe's "The Bells" would be fare poorly in another language, I think.

Python and C++ are still my favorites though. ;)

Really? I only know four: storge, agape, eros and philia (however you spell that one).

I can stand up for Python - that's what SPIRE's written in. C++ is FS2's language, right? So it can't be too bad either. ;)

ok.

swedish - english translation

fan - the devil
satan - the devil
jävlar - devils
jävla - f-ing
skit - ****
helvete - hell
förbannade - cursed

so, a rant might go something like
"satans jävla skithelvetes förbannade helvete"
which could be translated into something that would be like that f-word rant in boondock saints.

kankerlijer - cancer sufferrer. used as an insult
tering - some other disease

kolere - same as above
klootzak- asshole

(Hi, this is my first post here btw)

 MAIN LANGUAGE: English

LANGUAGES SPOKEN: English, Russian, German, French, some Spanish.

FAVOURITE LANGUAGE: Russian, because I am a self-confessed Russophile :)  but also because it's both powerful, romantic, and balls-out aggressive.

German is also good for confusing Year 7's by leaping ou of the bushes at school screaming "HALTE! HANDE HOCH!" with a big stick held in my hands like a sub-machine gun.

I voted Russian because that is my language and I think it is great for many purposes.

BTW, Russian "swear language" or "words used when swearing" is called "mat". verb - "materitsya" (to mat )

you know how in the US some people, mostly girls, say "like" between any two words?

well, some guys in Russian school talk like that, only with mat throughout their speech instead of "like..like..like..like".

Here is a couple of jokes

(roughly remember that one)
Scientists discovered that one of the reasons Americans defeated the Japanese in WWII is because the average word in English is 4 letters long and the average word in Japanese has 10 letters. So americans could give orders much faster.
The average word in Russian is 6 letters long. However, when mat is used the effectivenes of speech is multiplied 2-3 times...

Another one:

Scientits invented a clock that moves 1 minute forward each time a swear word is heard. They put it in the office, after a day the clock moved 15 minutes. They put it in the army barracks: a soldier comes in and says: "It's cold as it is, what idiot put that fan on the wall?"

hehehe.... I like that second one.

I did once know the Russian for 'I saw your mother in the park on her knees working for the rent money' (It was an insult used in a book I read between two Russians shouting at each other from neighbouring apartment blocks, which I decided to have translated into Russian but forgot it)

it worked well on ignorant fat townies but nearly got me beaten up when several Albanians standing at the bus stop a little further down the road heard it and thought I was shouting at them...

I liked French and Mandarin...  French is a very soft, soothing language, and it's beautiful to speak and listen to, while Mandarin is extremely expressive and emotional.  Spanish i never liked, probably because more people speak it here nowadays than speak English :doubt:

W/ my girlfriend, her family, and my family I speak spanish.  With my friends I speak english, but at work I do both.  I took a couple of years of French in highschool but that was too long ago for me to remember :D

You know, that reads almost just like the list of capabilities I planned for SPIRE when I first wrote her up. :) The first three were my brother's idea, but module support and integration with other languages were really important for the way I knew SPIRE was going to be built - brick by brick, adding new capabilities as soon as I imagined their need in a render. I also have the rudimentary ability to use PhotoShop plugins with my 2D engine, which has helped me immensely. Basically though, Ulundel, my brother chose it.

Quite possibly the best language in the world (Yea right galore, dies down),

but still,

The fact that some latin hedgehogs couldn't figure it out doesn't mean it is difficult. Not by a long shot. It is easily pronounced (once you know how, and you read what you see. Yep, that 's right, NO special pronounciations like englisn)

So, for JFK letters of the alphabet as follows... :)
