Title: I layed my computer to rest today...
Post by: Unknown Target on October 06, 2003, 03:52:19 pm
Having finally reached the end of it's usefull upgrade life, I have put my compter in the farthest nether reaches of the house, stripping it of it's hard drives and various network cards.
It might be some time before I am able to get a new one, thus leaving me computer-less, except for my dad's PC. :(

GOOD BYE GOOD COMPUTER! YOU HAVE SERVED ME WELL FOR THE PAST 6 YEARS!

Why put it away?

If it still works, use it!

An old computer is better than no computer!

Look at me, I'm lumbering around with a 4 year old 500mhz Win98se Box with 256MB of PC-100 RAM and 12GB of HD space!

Granted 6 years is kind of a different story.

What were the specs?

Bah, just get a whole lot of parts and overhaul the thing. My computer used to be a 166MHz Dell OptiPlex.

There might be not a single component, except maybe some of the cables, that was originally in that OptiPlex.

Speaking of upgrades, I think I'll need to do some myself. The UT 2003 demo really slowed my Athlon XP 1600+ and GF2 MX down.

When I first got it, the specs were:

PII 400 MHz
Voodoo 2
256 MB of RAM
about 20 Gigs of HD space

over the years, I upgraded to new components, to:

PIII 800 MHz
Voodoo 2
256 MB of RAM
about 30 gigs of HD space

next, I went to:

PIII 800 MHz
Geforce 2
256 MB of RAM
about 40-50 gigs of HD space

before my vid card busted (more on that later):

PIII 800 MHz
Radeon 9000
256 MB of RAM
60 gigs of HD space (over 2 HDs)

My vid card: what prompted me to lay the machine to rest was when my Radeon 9000 got fried. When I tried to upgrade to a 9600, it no longer fit into my now-ancient mobo, so I just went "eh, screw it. the machine was never stable, and the parts are too old"

I saved the HDs, network cards, and sound card. The rest I just put into the case and am going to use for junk parts.

if you don't want you'r old computer, I'd be more than happy to dispose of it for you, get my sister off my comuter, that I saved up for three years for, for a single god damned second, her and her cute little fuzy anime board :ick:

I'll probly take anything better than a 166mhz computer, though I'd much prefer something over the 3-400mhz range, I need two of them one for the acursed sister and another for mom, maybe a third for the younger brother,
then all I need to do is get a $50 router and we'll be all set

I would ship all my P1's and 486 but it might cost a good amount... if you want them...

 I feel your pain, man... my sister looks at those things too. Except she's five years older than me. :ick

Anyway, I will soon be able to empathise with you, UT - my computer's on her last legs too. Godspeed, may your good and faithful servant find the Big LAN In The Sky... that, or Bob's sister's room. :D

That's actually remarkably accurate... well, probably anyway. It was the overnight renders for over 6 months (ie. I didn't shut down for weeks at a time) that killed the old PSU - I've stuck a new one, but that's having trouble too, now.

somehow, i don't think my photoshop comp could handle all the rendering that you'd be able to do..;)

[color=66ff00]Pity you're not over here Bob, I could have given you a nice little 300k6 that needs a new home. Since getting my new system I don't have the room for it and it's just gathering dust.

hmm, a 300mhz k6 based PC, I think that could be worth paying the shipping charges for, that procesor could probly be cheaply upgraded too, I think.
if you realy mean it, I'll discuss this with the famely, maybe get my sister to pay the shipping costs if it's not too much.
I also have some frends in the shipping industry, I may be able to get that cheaper than normal

I think I might actually pull the thing out of the grave and use it as a personal server for files and pics and such.

I wish I had a faster hard drive in my mix of OEM and after-market parts. A 7200RPM 20GB Deskstar just doesn't cut it anymore. I really wish I had this one right here: http://www.maxtor.com/en/support/products/scsi/atlas_15k/atlas_15k/index.htm
If only they made a SATA version of that.....

When I helped out at my old high school repairing their PC's, the Optiplex's never gave me problems (except for one, fan wires kept getting into the fan).
