Title: Idea: Soak testing
Post by: RandomTiger on October 14, 2003, 12:37:53 pm
I’ve been thinking it would be a good idea to do some soak testing. This means leaving fs2_open running for a long time, i.e. when you are out or sleeping and reporting any problems.

Someone could make a mission in Fred which tests every part of the game possible, it could be set-up to respawn destroyed ships to keep it going indefinitely. Make Alpha1 invincible and leave it going with a debug exe and if its crashed when you come back to it note and report the file and line number.

The bugs it would show up (if any) would be the crash, logic and memory leaks that are difficult to track down and would only normally be found while you are playing the game.

It would either help us to make fs2_open more stable or prove that it is stable. Either way it would be a good thing that wouldn’t take much effort.

If enough people are interested I will find a modder to make the mission and start to organize it.

This is one of the better ideas I've heard alright.  I don't mind leaving the comp running for an extended period for the test if you like - I'm at work 9-12hrs a day, so would be no prob to have it up and running for that time.

System specs are 1.7 P4, 512 ram, geforce4 4200TI, win XP pro, DX9b, so should be about average system in use.  There's not a hell of a lot running on my system in the background, so shouldn't be a great deal of interference issues to worry about.

Provide the build and mission, I'll run the test and supply the error reports.  Beyond that though, what little personal time I get is spread very thin.

I'm not a Fredder, but quite happy to test it if someone can get the mission together, it wouldn't need modded ships, since they can cause their own complications :D

I tend to leave my second computer on all day long and it's only doing anything in the mornings so I'd be fine with this idea (Well as long as I'm not the only FREDder who who's ever willing to help RT out).  :)

My PC is on all the time anyways, I'd have no problem with this.

A like burn through testing for computer systems.  Sounds like an excellent idea!

I could toss the slower of my two athlon systems at it, one runs at 1650 MHz with 512 MB and a geforce3, the other runs at 2200 MHz with 512 MB and a geforece fx 5900 ultra.

Which build are we using, and what parameters do you want us to attach to the exe? :)

I''ll release all details at once when the mission is ready for us.
I'll make my own debug exe and freeze that copy of the code so any error report line numbers arent out of date.
