I've been thinking a lot about my future lately (as far as my education and occupation will be), so i'm curious as to what you all are at the moment (i.e. High school student, college student majoring in electrical engineering, etc.) and what your plans (realistically) are for the future.
Here's mine:
I'm currently in high-school and college (weird isn't it). but i'm (well, i have my first classes to get out of the way in college first, such as english, history, etc.) (going to be) majoring in either Computer Science, Computer Engineering, or some IT/Network administration job... i haven't decided yet, and my time's fast running out... though i'll be Cisco CCNA Certified by the end of next semester. i've also been thinking maybe in the design field (for cars, microprocessors, and/or other computer parts and designs... you know... like lab situation(s)). otherwise i don't know... i enjoy working with computers, but i'm sure i'd get bored working, for example, with hardware my whole life, or just networking my whole life, so i'm trying to find a field that requires multiple skills...
How about you guys?

College architecture student.
Covers all the disciplines: mathematics, arts, history, language, science, you name it. Extremely difficult and time-consuming but well worth the effort if you can handle it. :)
-
reallllyyy, that's interesting. what are job opportunities like, and how exactly is the work?
-
Currently: high school student. Officially finished on November 13.
Future: high school teacher (technology) for a few years, earn some money, then go to Bible college and train to be a minister. :)

Jobs, I really don't know. But there's always building going on.
And as for the work... well, I have studio for 11 hours a week, and that's just for reviews. All the actual WORK on the projects goes on outside of studio. It's really intense, grueling work, but it's actually lots of fun despite the stress, and I'd really rather spend 20 hours on a weekend building a model than crunching numbers or writing essays. Ask around the schools in your area.

As I said before (a year or two ago) I plan to be a corporate freak (and take over the world). :D
Seriously speaking, I want to major in mathematics, computer science or physics. I'm thinking being a professor would be a nice job. I'm leaning toward a math major right now, which'll take fewer courses (than the other majors) for me as I'll most likely be taking the local uni's math courses next year (sophomore year).

PR manager/PR with some game company's/leading small team (3 peoples) inside sony

:nervous:Sony's president:nervous:
before i got to sony i wanted to be medical worker

Computer Science (final honours year) student at Strathclyde.
Probably going to work in the games industry as a programmer, may try and go into business on my own doing something similar.

I'm at Glasgow University, just started first year of Aerospace Engineering. Dont have many plans for what I'll do afterwards - theres a lot I could do. But its a five year course, so plenty of time to think.
-
wanna be a doctor. bit discouraging, but, when all your family tells you that they'd rather stay sick if i ever get in the workforce.

Snob :p

Currently I'm just an 8th grader...Planning on TRYING to get into West Point then joining the US Marines (maybe airforce, but you never know.:D )
Course it's probably too early for me to be thinking about my future except getting grades that'll look good on my college resume.
-
Doing A-levels for the second time (grades the first time round were a bit crap) at the local college. I aim to go to university, probably to do a Computer Science degree, then get a decent job for a few years. This is to get enough money to get my PPL, so I can train as a commercial pilot, which is my long-term goal.
However, I have a horrible suspicion I'm going to end up in politics....

High School, Junior year. Currently studying basic IT courses at a vocational school half the day. I love the school system, normally i'd have to pay mucho denero for the class, but if i stay in school its free.
There is a large company putting in a large scale wireless WAN in my neck of the woods and they just hired someone out of my class. Hopefully, if I can get more money I can have A+ and Net+ under my belt and then i'll try for CNE or MCSE. Somewhere along the line there i'd like to get hired by said company.

Yeah, i actually did some work for the district (at $8.00 an hour) a few weeks ago... going from school to school (there's 30,000+ computers in the district, and hundreds of switches) doing various things on computers from installing operating systems, to building them, to getting rid of the many viruses on them ;) it's good experience, and while i didn't erally learn anything, it's good for my resume
-
First semester of uni studying for a CS degree. i'm in sophomore level CS classes (still too easy :D) and will be doing junior level **** next semester, possibly getting a 4 year degree in 3.
possible job: work at [V]
-
Currently high-school student, planning on going to study law in Universitas Tartuensis, or possibly somewhere in England, depending on how the EU deal ends.
-
currently: in university studying to be a civil engineer in IT.
later: get a job, make money, pay off debt, retire, play with computers all day.
-
Well, I'm currently working on a Bachelor's of Science in Applied Technology with a focus in Information Technology. There are as many management classes as there are Technology classes.
My advisor has stated that they espect graduates of this program to go on and become IT Managers or Network Administrators.
I don't work well with others however and eventually want to open my own small computer service store.
-
currenthly, doing high school/college/secondary school, or whatever you can compare it to in your local system
for the dutch, i'm in fourth grade Gymnasium.
FYI, Gymnasium is the heaviest education you can get at this age, it includes Latin, and the way i picked my subjects physics, chemistry, general sciences, biology, history, and lot's of other "fun" stuff.
for the future, there are a few ways i might go, always something wiith physics and chemistry, perhaps a hint of biology. then, i might go for research, i might go teaching, or i might do something as a journalist, the last seems my favourite option.
i would NEVER oick anything like SysOp as a job, computers are a fun hobby, but i'd go mad if i would be forced to use them 24/7.

In England? Well, you'd better hope it gets cheaper by then...

what grades does it require ?
wouldn't mind getting into coding myself.:)

Thanks.
*starts thinking*
can you hear a grinding noise ?

I'm currently unemployed. I have a degree from Art and Communication though.
In future I'd like to earn my living by doing comics or animations :D

Current: High school sophmore, part time firefighter, still training.
Future: Firefighter, Engineer (you know, as in trains?)

Currently a homeschooled highschool student. I think I'll be taking some post-secondary classes. And for my future job. I'd like to take collage courses in IT/computer tech, and start my own computer company. Like Dell or something, only I'd build good computers. :p
-
Why do so many people want boring jobs in IT. Atleast a few years ago the money was good, but now even that's not true. I ike computers and am quite knowledgable (hardware, networking, graphics etc) but I really think it's kind of boring to be working as a System Admin somewhere.
Currently : Last semester of Highschool. Actually, I was offcially finished last June, but I decided to come back for one more semester.
Plans: Go to Sheridan College (very well know for it's graphics program) and become a graphic and/or web designer. Start a company, make lots of money...you know the standard stuff..
Oh and BTW, for anyone who has done their CCNA: how hard is it to pass? I took (and finished, last year) a 3 year Cisco course in Highschool, but I'm not really sure how much of that has stuck. I ill probably pick up a CNNA certification book and study from that, so I expect atleast some of the stuff I've learned will coe back to me. So, how hard?
-
Yes.. IT jobs... *shudder*
Be different. Be a prostitute.
-
IT jobs are the future i think... what with computers and technology becoming more and more standard
-
Currently a highschool junior but ihope to go to college for computer graphics, 3d Modle design and computer programming.
-
I am presently attending Oregon State University, working towards a degree (most likely a Masters) in Computer Engineering. I plan on going into microprocessor design. Though with all the tech jobs moving to China (or India) I might as well learn Mandarin while I'm here.
high school teacher (technology) for a few years, earn some money,
Teachers make money? :D
-
Whoa! Kosh, you're in Corvallis too? It's a small world after all... :p

Well, money won't be the only thing I earn. I'll be shaping kids' lives (I like kids - can't wait to start a family). ;)
And yeah, I know, teachers hardly make anything in terms of money. But I can be content with little.

I'm applying to be a Navy fighter pilot. I may well be having ideas above my station...

Wow, we got another one. Got perfect vision? :)

** Suddenly feels really old ** :(
Well, I'm like the odd man out here. No computer science degree, no IT job, no great job in Sony :( Just my love for FS...
Currently I'm a Financial Analyst in the Acquisitions department for a development company of multi-family communities (That means we construct, develop, and manage hi-rise condo's, townhomes, and apartments). The company has about 50 apartment communities consisting of more than 15,000 multi-family rental and condo units throughout Florida.
What I do is basically: Once land has been found (which is also one of my jobs, but I don't usually do that), I'm the one that finds the money to build it and closes the loans/bonds (the biggest project I closed was a $19 million apartment community of 292 units). That's a really simple explanation for what I do, cuz closing these loans/bonds entails doing a ton of work.
Graduated a while back with a Finance degree and have real estate and mortgage licenses. Been doing this for almost 2 years, before that I was a mortgage broker and in real estate. It's no job at Sony, but it pays the bills :D
Future: Hope to have my own development company, but probably will be in rehabilitating older buildings to market standards.
**snore** Did I put you guys to sleep, too? ;)
-
sound's good normal work:)

I'm currently a uni student doing weekends in the 10th level of hell commonly branded as 'TKMaxx' (don't ever work there kids).
I'm studying biomedical engineering and I have the perhaps idealistic plan of putting my skills to use to help other people.

I'm currently working **** jobs to save up money to go to Uni next year, where I've got a confirmed place in an Applied Geology/Environmental Biology Double degree. I'm hoping to get work as a palaeontologist when I graduate, but I'm more likely to end up working for mining companies for a few years while I get a resume going.
-
Ah, I had such high aspirations for myself that, like Icarus, I didn't truly notice what the **** I was doing and as such I am currently plumetting towards Earth at great speeds.
Past Aspiration: God or other powerful being/entity
Past Reality: Expelled from school and kicked out of College
Current Aspiration: Freelance coder
Current Reality: Unemployed
Future Aspiration: Something that earns enough in 5 years for me to buy a nuclear weapon
Future Reality: Part-time fortune teller, using my new-found psychotemporal vision to set right in the present what will go wrong in the future. Kinda like Sam from Quantum Leap but with a tense-shift and less special effects

Square-Enix artist (CG,renderer,concept etc)
this is to all fellow artists you can make money if you are artists! and you believe

well it seems I've found a job, starting next wednesday. Bad part being I'll be unavaible when I work, living in a place where I can't bring my PC, and living far away from home... you probably won't hear much about me anymore, quite soon...

I wonder what that would be. Did you join the Armed Forces?
-
Right now i'm a college student living at home. :( lookin for a job that's close to home and gives me enough money to buy myself...stuff. currently studying history and ethics. next semester i plan on going into a computer science class or a programming class.
What i would like to do in the future is becoming a Historian, Archeaologist, and a Programmer. also there's a possibilty i might want to be a mechanical engineer like my father.

You'll be informed on a need to know basis, pilot.
let me just tell you it's nowhere near as exciting.
-
you're a lumberjack, eh?
-
a what?

a guy that chops down trees

ah, oh. lol no, I'm too weak for that ( my back is kind of crappy ).
Hotel receptionist is the thing.

Ouch to him being a hotel receptionist or that he has a crappy back? :D

I'm currently doing A-levels in Physics, English Lang, Geography, Maths.
Want to go uni to get a degree in physics, then join the Royal Armoured Corps as a Officer, to hopefully be a tank commander.
-
I'm currently in 11th grade, and I really should be typing up an essay for AP American History or studying for the PSATs right now :p
Future? Computer Engineering for my major, not sure about what school though. I'm thinking possibly RIT, considering they have that nice co-op program to help defray the costs and I can get my Bachelor's and Master's in five years....
-
you know you're doing exactly the same courses i did a year ago, and you've got the same career in mind as I do. you're like the same as me academically, but one year behind :)

Hey it's good news that you got some job
Bad news that it makes internet life a bit difficult.
But I hope you get things somehow worked out.

we'll see....

That's good to hear, man - make sure you keep in touch every now and then, though. Work = good.

ah well, I'm off in about 15 minutes, wish me luck I suppose :doubt:

good luck

Current job: systems administrator at Cisco Systems. [What this means is that I sit on my ass all damn day and contemplate creative ways to kill myself or others and read HLP. I never have any actual work to do. This is about the worst job I can imagine, but the pay is pretty decent.]
Future job: Bricklayer, cabling installer, fast food, whatever. My next job will likely not include computers except tangentially.
For those of you who are looking to get into IT: don't just get a CS or CS/IT degree and expect to be useful. The market is saturated. Right now, there's ten graduates for every single position out there. That means you're going to have to have either a) Mad Skillz (and not in Squadwar) or b) a combination of skills that is very useful (like a programmer with mad RDBMS skills, or a sysadmin who groks sub-packet level network mojo). Joe CompSci graduate is pretty well useless out here right now. Go for a Master's degree in a useful discipline. Believe me, it will make a huge difference.
Steak: you're going to become a minister? I'm not sure if I should be scared or awed. ;)
-
mikhael, if you don't want your job, I'd happily take it...
oh, since you oughta know, about how much does a cisco cert cost in terms of books and time and so on?
-
I'm currently enroled in the faculty of education at McGill in the process of getting my Bachelors of education to teach the social sciences at the High School level.
Jumped around before, I as previously at Concordia University studying History for a year and a half, and Comp. Sci for one semester.
Seemed to have found a profession I'm really enjoying so far, though I've got another 2 1/2 years to go.
Cheers!
-
I actually haven't the foggiest idea about Cisco certs. I don't have any. I'll see what I can find out though. As for the job, it's yours as soon as I move to Australia and take up bricklaying.
-
our high school offers the class. if you want to take it in college, you can, but as far as i know you don't need any books, the curriculum (for us anyway) is 100% online
-
I'm going to check with my uni.
it's a nice thing to put on the resumé...
-
Even I don't know what I do for a living, but I work in a Training centre for 16-18 year olds from less advantaged backgrounds (Trans : They're good kids, but it's like living in a rap video half the time) the pay is bad :(
Flipside :D
