Needs more of something....

Tha stars look a bit cheep, and the beams could blend into the glows better, but it's not bad.
Although IIRC, the Anuket doesn't have AAAf turrets... (I haven't looked at the tbl in so long though I may be wrong)

How do you make the glows translucent like that?

Which ones? the beams or the glow from where they start?
The glows from the starting point were made with, duh , the beam glow from the sparky VP. I used the Sequencer to layer this render so the start-point glows were located in the correct locations. ;7
If you are meaning the beams, they are just a line of vertices with "halo" enabled and special settings. So it's like particles. :D you can find information on this in any Blender laser tutorial.

In 3D:
Opacity Map = Colour Map

I used blender. :blah: Infacto I don't even have a copy of 3D max.
-
Not just in MAX. In any multi-map capable 3D program, if you get something like a frame from one of the thruster ani's and apply it to a box, then use the same frame for the opacity/transparency map, it'll be invisible in all the right places.
-
Hm... True, but I still prefer to filter black as transparent in TS...
From time to time I do the opacity maps, but not enough.

good. that's how Freespace does it.

Just personally, I would make those ships a lot brighter - with a yellow sun and 3 bright beams in the scene, I think it should be a lot higher lit. :)
-
not bad:yes:

*cough*[TEST]Beams, lasers, Blender, and the Anuket*cough*
[EDIT]Preview and submit buttons so close. :hopping: Anyway, it's pretty bright. So either it's my monitor or your's. And the light is blue light not white or yellow.

Well, you did say "Needs more of something....". ;) Besides, you learn ten times more from criticism than from compliments, I'm really trying to build you up here.
