okay, this is kinda hard to explain so bear with me......
I downloaded Woomeister's Mirrored Orion (the one with a hangerbay on both sides), and am planing on including it in my planed campain (as I'm sure nearly everyone is....)
Now, I decided that, for my campain, it would have been assembled more out of desperation, and would have had the weapons arrays from two Orions. Now, I'm thinking about redoing the turrets models, but if I do, then I should really redo the original Orions turrets as well.
This brings us on to the main question. I've always felt that the Orion (and Freespace Destroyers in general) was badly under guned. So:
'Should I give the Standard Orion more Turrets?'
If so, please make suggestions.
-
Is your campaign set after FS2? If so do whatever you like :)
-
For the Fs1 era, it has enough turrets, as they are only used against other destroyers anyways, and fs2, well, um, i think they're OK too, but it relies on fighter support a bit more because of faster bombers and such...
-
Hell, yes! The Orion is horribly under-armed. It needs a whole load of flak guns and AAA beams. I'd stick a flak turret on each side, two on top, two underneath, and one on the back. Then stick an AA beam on each quarter and each bow. It's got plenty of big beams, but I'd redo the chin turret to look more like a beam turret - it looks kinda funny with a BGreen firing out of those three weedy little barrels. Change it into a projector dish shape or something.
-
the fs2 orion seems to me to have sufficient anti capship firepower, but is light on anti fighter/bomber weapons. in my opinion theis could be solved by either more turrets, or fitting the ship with more advanced turrets.
-
Make 'em like a porcupine :) Doesn't matter if the guns themselves are pish - just make sure there's lots of em with big flashy lights. :) ;7

In the link were Woo posted the twin-bay Orion, I just posted a suggestion for a "Light" version of the Orion, with no fighter ramps at all, much like a ship where both sides look like the left side of a standard Orion. There would however, be a small fighter bay (with no ramp) located on the belly, facing forward. Something like this would have fewer fighters than the standard, so to compensate (assume T-V War Era) it would have some missile turrets... which is something I think the Orion on a whole, lacks. The AAA and flak are alright for FS2 era, but before this all you got is heavy cannons with a much lower fire rate. Complementing the addition of missile launchers, might even be mounts for conventional primary weapons, along the same lines as the 2 primary turrets on an Aten. So in my view, assuming this isn't for FS2, leave the conventional Orion the way it is, or have a special variant of it with such additional weaponry, and also add the new weapons to the "Light" and twin-bay versions. As far as FS2 era is concerned, I agree that switching the main beams to the dish style is better.

Sure, why not?

sounds like the Reliant....
-
Well, as most people are in favor, I'll make a start then.
I'll create one with the orginal number of turrets, and other with an upgraded number. That will keep everyone happy:D
-
I always thought an Orion was over-gunned (is that a real phrase ?) considering beams where retro-fitted.
Getting broad-sided from an Orion is pretty devastating, and more powerful than any Hecate, despite the Hecates being newer and presumeably designed to carry beams from the start.
-
Well, that depends on what grade of beams it has...;7
Oh and BTW, here's a WIP shot:
Havn't finished the texturing on the barrels.
It's kinda based on Ryx's uber high poly Orion turret. It's got 228 polys total
-
Cool!
I'd make the base larger though; and use capital01-03b for the texture in the inside of the turret.
-
Larger: How, and were? Do you mean the 'Circular' base?
-
More pics!
I also have a 'Destroyed' version of the new turret.
What would people prefer as the replacement?
A) a dome shape with a slight recess at the end
B) a standard flat plate type turret
or
C) a 'Darlek' gun ;)
-
Well, personally I'd leave the same number of turrets, but put AAA beams everywhere. :D
-
Darlek Turret! C C C C C C!!!
:D
-
That new tri-turret rules dude.
-
Aren't those turrets quite hi-poly?
In my opinion, Orions are well armed even in the era of FS2. With beam cannons and those damned AAAs, it is quite effective.
I think it has 4 BGreens, which are not negligible.
[EDIT]Why would the GTVA upgrade the few remaining Orions rather than making modifications on the newer, better Hecates?
-
Because the Hecates aren't better and the Orion still has plenty of tactical value?
-
because after seeing the first Hecate IRL, they decided it was waaaaaay to ugly to use permanently.
-
agh! it's Dalek, there's no "R"!!! it's just the actors' british accents that make it sound like there's an "R"...
sorry, big Dr Who fan :p
anyways, about the destroyed turret, i would say a or c :p
-
I'd say C if you're planning on making this for FS1 era, and B if its FS2, as it fits more with the dish design of other terran beam cannons... hey, its more cannon... sorry, I know that was bad. :D

It's the Orion, from FS1, so I guess then it's C, the 'Dalek' gun (you sure there isn't a 'r' in there?)
Only flaw is that with poly turrets, you punch the limits. The Twin hulled version has 8 triple turrets, and that takes it over 4000 vetices total (all LODs, debris + turrets), and my version of PCS hangs when trying to convert.....
normal Orion is okay ATM, but I might have to reduce the number of vertices on the main guns.....:(
-
Actually all fs2 warships are under-gunned...if compared to a standard WW2 battleship... 250m in length and they have more firepower than Collossus!

There was an updated version of PCS posted in one of the threads that came up upon the release of the HT&L code which had an updated higher poly version of PCS. Are you using that version or just the standard version of PCS?

I didn't know WW2 Battleships had beam cannons.. :blah:
-
what i would like to see is a ship with lot's and lot's of small flak guns and something machine gun like. very low powered guns, but the entire hull is covered in them.

If you mean the one Bobbeau put up for dL in this thread:
http://www.hard-light.net/forums/index.php/topic,17976.0.html
then that is the version I'm using, took me half a dozen tries to download, but got it in the end.
I'm don't think it's the poly count thats the problem, but the number of vertices in the mesh (I could only convert my Saturn when the vertice limit was below 4000, speaking of which, K, do you think you could put the fixed version of the Saturn up for download or something? I've UVmapped the bad turrets, I want to get this ship done!)
-
I knew there was something I was forgetting! I'll send you a copy once I've finished looking at the new posts on HLP.

yes, i am, unless the BBC misspelled it in every single circumstance of it's appearance on their website :p

Orions have 3 BGreens, one on the underside of the front end, and one on each rear flank, and 3 Terslashes, 2 on either side of the ship at the front, and another one on the port flank near the back, so although the Hecate has almost twice as many turrets as the Orion, it only has 1 BGreen and a couple terslashes. I always thought of Hecates as giant, less effective Aeoluses, cuz they have all those damn flak guns.
oh, and i choose C, the funny looking gun.
