I know it stands short for Internet Rally Chat right? But I want to know a few things. Is chating it's only purpose? What benefits do I have from it? Is it risky to use it and what kinds of risks are we talking about? I am new to this so I need some info on it first.
-
The R stands for Relay, and while chatting is indeed its actual point there are other features to be had these days. I'm no expert but you can transfer files via an arcane process called DCC. As for security risks, if a guy tells you that you're being hacked and you must rip your modem out immediately, ignore him
-
DG pretty juch summed it up, security is always a problem, but it's safer then IE, as long as you don't accept anything from anyone but those you really, really know. DCC does indeed work, and on some servers there are bots functioning for file downloading, mostly warez.
-
Use mIRC 5.91
-
mIRC is good.
and don't accept anything from an0n, ok?
-
IRC is the best form of chat, and also you can get....shareware.....easily.
mIRC is perfect, because it does everything without all the stupid bells and whistles.
-
mIRC blows, mainly because of all the security problems. If you're in for masochistic simplicity, use a text based client like ircii, epic or *****x. For a graphical client I suggest virc or xchat.
IRC security depends on the server you use, also make sure not to click any random spam links if you're on windows.
-
mIRC is pretty much the only option for Windows peeps. X-Chat is experimental at best and vIRC is hard to screw around with.
mIRC is clean and simple and as long as you disable DCC's you're fine.
-
Kvirc (with a powerful scripting language, the site says you can do oop) is available for windows, as is xircon and bersirc (scripting in object pascal).
-
Xircon sucks balls.
mIRC is all anyone needs.
-
for this one time, i agree with an0n, mIRC is pretty good, and very useable. and it comes with a good helpfile.
-
As has been mentioned, it is possible to obtain huge ammounts of warez and pirate movies via IRC. But these are obviously illegal and you must take care not to download them, if you see what I mean.
-
I'm using mIRC even as I write this. Admittedly I'm not actually using it, but I'm there in a channel.
-
I'm sorely tempted to log on and start a spam race
-
go to irc.sorcery.net #nodewar
or #hardlight , but most people hang out in nodewar.
-
Do you have more than people than me, Maeg and Darkage online these days?
-
i never visit #hardlight, but in #nodewar we have Shi/Kam, Tiara, an0n, darkage, DM, Zeronet, Icy, and some other people online regulary.
-
Will one of them make me dinner? I'm hungry...
-
Well I count 4, including myself.
