I refuse to accept anyone did that by hand - perhaps there's some sort of converter? It could simply convert a pixel (or small group of pixels) to a letter based on the (average) brightness...

There are image to ASCII converters out there. Even in color. Wonder what this would look like with color.. hmm... with all the font tags it would be huge obviously.

I'm guessing that someone has remade the Matrix in ASCII, as has been done with Star Wars. Am I right?

If I remember rightly, there's a quake1 renderer that does this, so you can play Quake in an Xterm. ;)

There is indeed. It was mildly fun until I realised I didn't know where the hell I was, and my eyes were hurting from squinting so much ^_^
