Woo thought the time was right to announce this, so I'll nip in and do it. :)
Basically the whole format of Inferno is changing. Virtually everything on the statistical side of things is going to be torn up and casually discarded in favour of a clearly defined, strict specification to be applied to our assets.
In other words, we're gutting the ships and weapons TBLs and going to make things a lot cooler. :)
You'll be seeing new innovative weapons (with a bit of help and bit of hope from the SCP) and far more specialisation. There will still be general purpose stuff that's good in a jack-of-all-trades way, but using the specialised equipment will be balanced to pay dividends in effectiveness. I don't want to give away too much at this stage, partially because I want you fans to be surprised and mostly because we haven't put most of our ideas into practise yet, but the list of cool new stuff includes fighterbeams, hypervelocity missiles, multi-stage cluster missiles and implosion bombs. :)
As for the ships, we're giving each class of fighter, bomber, non-combatant and warship its own new set of statistics that will set them apart much more clearly. Cruisers, for example, will be predominantly anti-fighter and have the most advanced point defense armaments. Corvettes, in contrast, will focus more on supporting attacks with their anti-subsystem, disruption and dispersion weapons. There will be much larger performance gaps between light and heavy fighters, and bombers will be suitably balanced so as not to be able to go one-on-one with most of them. Anti-warship destroyers will be able to smack down any cruiser or covette without much effort, but will be virtually helpless against heavy bombers.
As things stand right now this will undoubtedly cause compatibility problems with R1. We may re-release the first chapter's missions to take advantage of the new order of things, but our priority now is designing chapter 2 from scratch. More to come...

You know... while your working on new weapons, are you going to make them look more like weapons in the weapon selection menu instead of a bunch of horribly textured 3d max looking low-poly models?
Sorry, i had to get that out of my system.
Good idea... cruisers have had no purpose since late FS1. Aeolus was the only exception.

Hmm, I dunno if I'll like some of these changes, but I dunno. Might be really cool, might be awful. Won't find out until we see it. Just don't keep us waiting another whole year. =P

Who's complaining? Inferno is what these people decide it will be, and that is all. Personally, I'm overjoyed that they're actually thinking these things out - it's a sign that their pushing the quality of their work as hard as they can. :yes:

Since you're gutting the tables, are you going to wait for the extra species support to be fully implemented, and use that to its full extent? It would save you from having to revamp the tables again in the near future.
And I've got some ideas stirring in my head for a SC Raguel edit, if you haven't redone it already. If you have I'll take my concept and twist it to make it Vasudan.

The fileplanet versions have a total of 1942 downloads, and there was at least 1 mirror, so I'd guess we're close or just over 2000 total :)

Yeah, it's not the only new thing either, though some of the old craft have been removed as they now look bad/or I got something better.

Are you going to punt the Vesuvius and Cyone? How about replacing the Vesuivius with the Raziel, the Cyone with...something, and the Keres with the Ladiel?

The Vesuvius is currently replaced with the GTF Mihos, and the Cyone is replaced today by Hamanos great Herc 3. The Pachet is replaced by the Geb, and the following ships have been removed:

The sabus maps are really ugly and the Phobos ADv would never be used (and I prefer my Phobos)
The Hesat was only brought in to replace the Tanen as the Tanen looked worse, however G.Es Tanen update fixes that.
The VCI have been removed from the campaign, but not from the storyline...
The Abel was removed by request and is replaced by the updated Lilith.
Oh the Iblis is gone too, forgot that one.

Hardly a big thing for me to worry about right now, since I'm rewriting ships and weapons TBLs from scratch anyway. Each faction will be rigidly restricted to their own weapons, bonuses and technologies. I believe this'll make our job building up chapter 2 a hell of a lot easier. :)

when you replace old ship you release new version of old files like
soc\vasudan pack (20.1 mb) and rest of packs or one new file ( 10 or 20 mb) that will relpace ships in old files?
I have a 56k modem so it will not be funny download again 100 or 150mb.

As for the new ships not sure, if it's a full re-release, I'll probalby drop the ss anis which cuts most of the download size.

And if you base the combined Ch1 & 2 around an SCP from some of the latest releases, you can get the pof rendered ship viewer so SS ani won't be needed... I just wish someone could get the scan effect, glowing green grid, and quicker rotation rate for the pof version.

EACa Telemus has no beam weapons but he have few subach turrets that I think must be a beam not subach turrets.

I see that both terrans and vasudans forces don't have a juggernaut class ship. In old fs2 GTVA build collosus. In Inferno EA build Icanus, but GTVA don't have any supership maybe you can add a juggernaut to GTVA? weaker than SJ amritaya and AJ androgeos .
Can you add a juggernaut to EA? Can it be a new version of Nemesis?
I know that you can't change whole story but these ships don't have to be in campaing.

They have large Supercarriers instead of Juggernaughts, instead of making bulky warships they increased the firepower of their smaller classes.
Can you add a juggernaut to EA? Can it be a new version of Nemesis?
No, it took too much resources to make the icanus that a Juggernaught class was a waste of time.

Besides, the Icanus could waste a juggernaught without any real problems.

Just thought I'd mention this in this thread: Phreak has updated the inferno build of FS2_Open. I'm not sure how it does as I'm currently playing the Freespace Port under his latest FSO regular build.

Species support seems to be in there
No ss anis :D
Hud doesn't vanish anymore
Open GL looks far better to me than the last INF build
Big downs:
massive speed decrease when looking at capships (my system went down to 7fps in m14)

uh i had to gut HT&L since were reworking it. just add "-nospec" to the command line and it should run normally. there's some extra stuff in there that you would notice if you looked at the CVS

Basic species_defs.tbl completed, now supports 'EA' and 'Ancients' as well as the normal three.

How do you choose FRED colors for a species? I always get purple for the fourth species and yellow for the sixth, and I haven't found a suitable ship for my fifth species yet.

For the EA it would both be very easy and make intrinsic sense to simply use the FS1 effects and flyby sounds for them.

I know they aren't complete but i think they will be done before chapter 2, they are in the same page where is herc 3.

The TVWP won't allow us to use the Ticonderoga, and we already have several Orion Mk II style ships.
