Title: Can't get my mission to load, why not?
Post by: übermetroid on October 23, 2003, 08:43:34 pm
I can't get my mission to load, it always fails as soon as I hit the "load" button.  What gives?

http://www.swooh.com/peon/ubermetroid/Sathanas.fs2

Can anybody help me out?  My only guess is that there are too many ships being loaded, but I don't think so, Fred would have said something.  Maybe this is because of Open?

1) What version of FSOpen and/or FREDOpen are you running?

2) What kind of error is it? (I'm guessing crash to desktop).

For 1, check the SourceCode FaqForum.

For 2, make sure it isn't a different version from other Opens or FS versions.

1)Fred and Open V. 3.55
2)Crash to desktop when it tries to load mission

I am going to look in the SCP pages maybe I can find a lead there somewhere.

check your available memory... FS1 doesn't load if you have less then 300Mb for example...

I suggest you first try it with FS_Retail. And if it runs on it, you can close a tons of examples why a mission would crash.
Only that mission crashes? Have you tried with another one? Maybe you have made a modification with the tables that FS doesn't like, and your mission is errorless.

dude, I mean this in the nicest possible way but:
1 Sathanas
3 Destroyers
8 Corvettes
and 12 cruisers

even if it did work (I only got it to load in FRED_Open) it wouldn't be that good. It would look cool with all those beams being thrown around but, I quote
"battle of endour syndrome"

:)

That's not 'Endour' that's 'Endor'
Just noticed

Those are SO many ships. But I had a mission of similiar kind back in my days when I only could FRED(=I didn't join HLP), and it worked without much problem on my comp. However, I only gave beam cannons to the Shivans. The mission consist(s) or (ed) of:

2 Demons
1 Ravana
2 or 4 Cain or Lilith
2 Typhons
5 Mentu
4 Aten
3 Sobek
1 Charybdis

And a couple(tons :)) of fighters  flying around and firing at each other.

So in a word(not notepad :D), I have doubts that the problem is the so many ships present.

my point is even if it were to work, would it be that good to play, given most FS2 missions only have one or two capships ?

My first mission had 2 Arcadia,  3 Orions and 1 each Hades and Hecate, and they were just to add "depth" to the battle.

But machines were generally lower performance the day the missions for FS2 were done. As official authors, performance is a primary point. So it is completely understandable that [V] FS2 missions don't have much capships on the field of battle.

A reason why the mission 'High noon' has only eight[!] fighters and two supercapships ONLY.

I like to see beams fly around.  Thats what I like.  :D

I was going to make a mission that was pretty to watch, and that was about it.  Good for taking pictures.

I think the problem is that I have too many ships being loaded.  I will just redeisgn.

Maybe using fewer ship classes would help. So if you have three destroyers for the Shivans: a Demon, a Ravana, and a Lucy, you might change all of them to Ravana. They all have beams. :)
