Ever make something you're proud of, and at the same time ashamed you even bothered? You know what it is. Go look.

Its about 275 polys before you subpatch/mesh-smooth it. It is VERY much a work in progress. The thing I am most pleased with is the lanyard eyelet and the chain link for hanging it.
Comments, criticism, flames, etc. appreciated. Well maybe not the flames.

what is it?

Scroll over the pics.
it's a lightsaber.....
-
Maybe I should paint in a fake blade. ;)

You read my mind. ;) I like the materials you put on her, Mik. Has it got a name?
-
That's a nifty looking flashlight dealy.
-
something like this?
-
nice shtick :D
-
Make the blade longer.
-
I think Carl was limited by the size of the original pic. :D
Steak, the materials are all just stock materials from the Net. I don't remember where I go the chrome, but I adjusted the tint for a darker cast. The darker metal is a blued steel with a slight tint change. The only other materials in use are from the September 2002 Newtek Texturing contest. I can't remember the creator's name, but I have it at home.
As for a name? Its just a lightsaber hilt. Then again, they have names in Jedi Academy, so I guess this one could be called.. um... Stone.

it looked like a flashlight. thanks for telling me it was a lightsaber.
it looks good either way.
-
Forgot to mention, Carl, the blade should be yellow. :D

and about 3 or 4 times longer than the hilt.

first i thought it was a spark plug....
then i thought it was a shock...
then i saw the file name and realised I just dont like Star Wars all that much...
It is very well done though...
The area around the link in the third image is just.. odd... the reflection is bright around the link, but just below that its darker, almost a rust colour..

Very nice, I like the design, it's very functional and thus more realistic.
The blade length is 130cm long, I read that in 'I Jedi' though so it's not guaranteed to be accurate...
Of course I'm simply going to use this as an excuse to show my own RL™ lightsaber. ;) (and my sucky photography skills)

You buy that from Parks Sabers or make it?
-
I made it a few years ago. I'm flattered that you could think it was one of the parks sabers, they're quite good.
-
:eek2: ..you made that?...
yee gods man... now if it was an ACTUAL working saber;7
-
If it was an actual working saber you and everything else would turn into a very hot mush. ;)

*SNIP*

If you can get a less harsh light on that and give me closer pics at multiple angles, maybe I can make that in 3d. :D
Thorn, could you upload a pic with the section you're talking about highlighted/circled/whatever? I'm not sure I see what you mean. :(
-
Yeah, I really wouldn't trust myself with an actual working lightsaber, the potential for destruction is simply mind boggling.
BTW thanks for the offer mik but I'm working on my new design already (might get this one machined on a CNC lathe). You'd have a right laugh if you knew what the old one was built from. ;)

PVC Piping or a vacuum cleaner hosepipe it looks like and some other random stuff? ;)

Heh, I remember her. Damn fine construction man, seriously. :)

Minor change. I thought the beam emitter was a little too bulky and the design unbalanced. I'm not sure if I like this any better. It looks more balanced, but loses something I think.

Once I finalize the overall design, I'm going to freeze the smooth and go back and add more fiddly details. At that point, I'll probably change the button panel, add some panel seams and maybe be really fruity and etch some characters (in an aproppriate font) into the spaces between the larger seams.
For what its worth, I've played around with making this into a staff saber, and lightsaber-nunchaku (why not, right? ;)).
