Why not have 3d beam effects? I would look really cool! Allowing you to see though them and they would be more rounded off making the game almost completely 3d. :D
-
I had brout up the idea of volumetric beam (ect) effects, it met with luke warm respoce from the other coders
-
wouldn't that sorta make the game run at 2 frames per second?
-
Beams look convincing enough to me now. A 3D version is not worth the frame rate reduction, if you ask me.
-
they look good now better look better in 3d ;7
-
And if you only get 2 frames a second you'll have much more time to appreciate that! :p
-
The shinemapping takes a big enough performance hit on my system.
-
If you would be able to see the difference, it would look worse. This has been brought up before, I'm sure of it...
-
probably it would suffer of the same problem of volumetric shockwaves, unless some kind of overexposure could be added about performance loss, well I think it wouldn't add many polys, but I don't know how many other calculations would it require

DarkLight Conflict was full of volumetric beams and stuff. after all, the basic idea for volumetric effects is, ironicaly enough, to use lots of 2D sprites.
but for me, using a mesh for beams is a no-no. wouldn't look as good, and would do weird things with mapping and beam range, things like that, I suppose.
