Title: Is it MAX or NASA?
Post by: Tolwyn on October 27, 2003, 03:41:40 am
One good news is that I've done the mesh of the good old Earth. If you look at a real photo of planet Earth taken by the Apollo 11 crew you'll notice that there are no stars and no glows. You can notice the planet turns blue to the edge by the atmosphere. But my intention was not to recreate the real planet but the SF series 'real looking' planet. Well, as you see I've added light glows on the dark side of the planet using a fallof texture. Well, I'd say the planet if finished. Perhaps I'll add more detailed cloud maps soon...

Well still looks like very high quality work.
Lets see it ingame....beside that could you make a second planet just with another landshape..then we could simulate different Starsystems....and Earth..well I think we both know what scenario it can be used for ^_^

I have improved maps on the model, but you are right... it is based on my old Earth.

Excellent work. I really love these lights on the darkside.
Gives the Idea of uge cities, after all our story is set in the future
and population is increasing allready fast nowadays.

Now how about a little hurrican over the ocean to give it a final touch ?

then by then there should be over 20 billion people crammed onto that tiny sphere.  Howsabout some ocean platforms?  They already want to build one for Taiwan. ;7

Does anyone remembers the small scenen when Blair landed with the Dragon on Earth in WC IV.
IIRC there you can see Earth for a quite short moment. Who ever finds the scene first post it please....so we can take a better look at what Earth looks like in WC IV.

My suggestion for the city lights is to add in some large circular constructs, similar to the planet lights in this Homeworld 2 screenshot:

I doubt many of them have working electricity.

That was more my point. And I didn't mean it as an insult to the Mexican people, but Mexico in general isn't one of the wealthiest nations on Earth.

We are talking of the year 2673 here; even the Mexicans should have electric light by then:p

it's Max - because the light pollution isn't that strong - it's an exaggerated map

Actually the light pollution is that strong, it's just that the camera exposure (plus the contrast of the bright Earth and otherwise dark space) used for space-pictures doesn't pick-up the Earth lights or the background stars. That's why video footage in-orbit doesn't show the background stars, but astronauts do state that it's the best view of the night sky anywhere. :)
