on my third run through of the game, i've reached clash of the titans. my (incompetent) wingmates protect the bastion (poorly) while i destroy the tantalus. the bastion proceeds on it's merry little way, get's about 3km from the jump point, and.. just sits there. sits there, spinning in place.

and here we are on the fifth or so time playing the god damn mission, sitting within the node, screaming at the monitor that god will pay for this.
has this been encountered before? the only difference between my previous games and this one is that i'm reycling an old character instead of using a new one. i've seen some mild retardation like wingmen and command repeating their dialog recordings twice, but that's about it.

It happened to me once, a while ago... it has something to do with the Tanalus being destroyed messing up the departure cue since the correct bomber wings can't arrive... Since it seems that you aren't playing on medium, since your wingmen are alive, I'd just suggest you try it again without destroying the Tantalus...
And, since you seem to be playing FS1, I'd suggest you have a look at Skippys FS1 campaign page...

*hasn't seen skippy's fs1 campaign page...looks...oooo..cool...*

yes, i am playing on medium. i generally play on hard but will sometimes reduce it to medium when there are numerous objectives and i am not in the mood for restarting to attain perfection. does that matter? every time ive played the game i've destroyed the tantalus, generally using the same technique, and ive never seen this before. i do so because the wingmen just arent any good at protecting a unit as large as an orion from bombers and i cant keep off waves of basilisks and bombers singlehandedly for 10 minutes without reducing the difficulty, which i refuse to do. ever. how bothersome. i guess i'll try again and wait until the bastion is along side it or something.

This sometimes happens when a large ship has orders to fly to a waypoint. When a ship doesn't land exactly on the waypoint, it'll spin around trying to find it. Unfortunately, large ships can't maneuver well enough to do this. Hence, they'll just orbit the waypoint. The explosion of the Tantalus may have pushed the Bastion ever so slightly off course, preventing it from hitting the waypoint exactly.
The way I get around this problem is to use the distance sexp to check for the distance from the waypoint, instead of using are-waypoints-done. You could try modifying the mission to do this.

I had the same problem when I played through the original Freespace 1 some days ago. Except it was the second last mission, and Lucy was spinning around in the node. And firing upon the bastion when they were facing each other. The beams took like one minute to reach the bastion...

May I point the people who play FS1 to the link i posted earlier? You may find it interesting...

I'm playing FS1 Port now, and I'm having problems with the "Failure to Communicate" mission. I get the lifepods to the typhon and hold off the first attack on the communication station. But when the second wave (the nephilim) jumps in they immediately fire phoenixes on the station, destroying it. This happens every time, and I don't have a chance in hell of stopping the nephilim.
-
How did you hold off the first attack? The Lucifer is supposed to nuke it immediately.
(You may have gathered from that statement that the station is supposed to be destroyed.)

He means the Faustus that is acting as the Comms relay thingy for the system. :)

Back to the Bastion question: Would it take much effort for you to ignore the Tantalus? Maybe(sure :D) you won't complete the bonus objective, but it worth a try.
Flying an URSA in that mission?
Are you using something different from the standard [V] campaign? I mean for example modified tables, and so on.
Maybe you should try to unextract the mission itself from the .vp and see if it has the problem discoverable in FRED.

For cying out loud! Take out the tantaluses engines and heavy turrets! Then deal with the fighters. once the Bastion jumps out finish the (now imobile) Tantalus...
-
Indeed, what I tend to do is disable the Tantalus and then pick off the fighter wings it sends out. Just camp yourself right next to the fighterbay, IIRC it sends out Basilisks and Shaitans - easy prey for accurately-aimed primary fire. :)

Aha. I misunderstood.
I had that problem playing the Port version as well - it's impossible for me to save the Faustus, and I ended up hacking the mission to make it invulnerable. ;)
It's a bug in the Port. PM GalacticEmperor (Galemp) about it.
