Title: Any Way to Update Laptop gfx chip or drivers?
Post by: J3Vr6 on October 28, 2003, 10:29:52 am
Alright, I have a Sony Vaio that has one of those built-in 3d chips by ATI Rage.  It has only like 8 mb of memory on that card :(  FS SCP isn't going to be running on that system for much longer if I don't do something about my laptop :sigh:  Not to mention newer games coming out...

So riddle me this, is there any way to replace that 3d chip w/ a better, more recent one?  Have you heard anyone doing this before?

If not, is there any way to update the drivers for the chip?  Sony Vaio's don't have updated gfx drivers on their website for my laptop.  It's 2 years old, so I figured an update has to be out there somewhere...

You use a laptop?

Sucks to be you.

And no. If it isn't built specifically for that model of laptop, it probably won't work. They don't even have standard cable types in those stupid things. You could give it a shot, or call 'em up and see if the company makes their machines compatible with something else, but other than that what you'd find on, say, the Sony page would be about it. And they don't typically make very impressive upgrades to laptops, they just make new laptops with newer hardware.

I hear ya.  Was hoping for a different answer but feared this was it.

And yeah, I don't really like using a laptop.  My desktop is an old AMD 450 that barely runs anymore (don't know why, it's gotten sooooo slow).  I have my monitor and mouse hooked up to my laptop, so it's not that bad.  Just sucks that you can't do anything about the graphics card.

Only recently did a company put out a laptop with an upgradeable video component. Sony was not that company. Sorry.

if your desktop is sooo slow, get your data of it, and format. it might help due to some mem eating idiocy. or run linux.

It's 450 AMD running on Windows 98SE with a Geforce 2 MMX, 384 megs of memory (or there abouts).  It used to run Win 2k but for some reason it had a coronary and runs better on Win98.  The computer just isn't worth running.

It seems to be really confused, no matter how many times I re-install windows or re-format.  For instance, whenever windows media player starts it will start accessing my CD burner (doesn't matter if there's a CD in there or not) for no apparent reason for about 5 minutes, with Windows being frozen during the entire time.

So I started to use the laptop I use for work. 800 mhz, 128 megs, 20 gig HD.

[color=66ff00]Weird, I had a 300k6 and now have a 500k6 that runs win2k without a hitch. Sounds like a bit of optimisation would go down a treat.

Um... que?  I have no idea what it means to optimise my machine.

U know what, Maeglamor?  You have just inspired me to post on how to get that computer up and running again :D

Stryke 9 shut up. Keep your comments to yourself.
Now about the laptop. Maybe you should try selling it to some good deeler and get a new one with some extra money added to the current price of your lap top. That's always better than buying a new one. You could actually save some money that way and invest it in some additional hardware.

Does anyone have that pic of the pot and kettle to hand?

It's not the same one, but it'll do.

I see Razor still thinks his opinions are valued or, indeed, met with anything but contempt in some corner of the planet. How deluded one soul can be boggles the mind. One would think he'd have worked out that nobody likes him here, he doesn't like anybody either, and he doesn't have anything of any real value to say or read, would have put two and two together, and ****ed off by now, but then again, it is Razor.

You have an ATI Rage? Wow, that's quite old. Is that even the same era as the nVidia TNT2?

No idea when the TNT2 was out.  It's an ATI Rage Mobility-M1 AGP w/ 8 megs of memory.  I found an article in ATI's website that it was announced and released in February 1999.

I wish I could find drivers for this thing, or something!  Drives me crazy.

lol, tell me about it.  ATI won't give out drivers cuz it's in a laptop, and Sony doesn't have any for it :sigh:

On another note, the ATI website says my gfx chip should support 1.2.1 of OpenGL, but when I try to play FS2_Open for OpenGL, it says I have 1.10000 and need 1.200000.

thats because ATI isn't giving out drivers.  it would support 1.2.1 with drivers

My brother once had an ATI Rage.  he had problems playing half-life with it

I fished around and it seems like someone has a driver for it.  A lot of people with my type of chipset have had problems with support and driver updates.  Some guy found out that the drivers on some ATI cards were similar and that this one worked on his.

I'm gonna try it today after work and see what happens.

Er... I dont get what you're trying to prove with this one. Actually, I asked Maeg to put the ban count there when I saw I didn't have one. I figure it will show people what a tough and cool rebel I am. Anyway, haven't you found a new hobby yet or do you still wander round here with your eyes shut and your fingers in your ears?

It's like talking to a brick wall, this is. Is there a button somewhere that will censor all Razor's posts for me? Like, an ignore button or something? I'm really getting fed up of his oblivious-to-sarcasm-not-to-mention-outright-telling-him-we-don't-like-him attitude

Just lock the thread already, please.  They've stopped helping and suggesting things about 8 posts ago and I don't think anyone else can offer help on this, anyway.

Thanks for the help, guys.  It's resolved that I'm stuck with my laptop's gfx capabilities.

[color=66ff00]First rule of happiness, ignore those that annoy you.

And yes, there's an option to ignore in your profile settings.

Yay! I can't see a bloody thing Razor's been saying! Fantastic. I recommend this feature to everyone

Cheers Maeg, I think my karma just went up a point or two :D
