Title: Starship Enterprise at Mach5
Post by: mikhael on October 28, 2003, 11:06:59 am: Those crazy ~~brit~~Aussie (sorry) boffins. They have nothing to do but see how the Starship Enterprise fares at MACH 5 (http://www.physics.uq.edu.au/lp/lasdiag/enterp.shtml).

I figure since some of you are big Star Trek and/or FryingPansInSpace fans... ;)

That is not entirely accurate... It is unproven but highly suspected that the P-51 was the first aircraft to break the sound barrier. There are photos/videos of high-speed dives in WW-II in which shockwaves formed around the wings of P51's, and a couple of incidents that seem like sonic booms (though in a continental war, that isn't saying much). Trouble is, now that the record is important, all the P51s in the world are too valuable to risk in such a test.

I get to do computation fluid dynamics as part of my university course. Maybee i'll spend some computing time on the Enterprise :D
