This is NOT a joke! Last Thursday I was cleaning up at my worksite, when to my shock and delight I came across two spindels (aporx count 200 disks each ) of Freespace 2 disks One and Two!!! (but disk Three was absent) I was like HOLY ****!! I quickly asked my boss if these were "old" and schedules for destruction (in the hopes I would that night be taking all 400 disks home ;7 ). Again I was taken off guard, he said NO they are NEW!!!
Apparently there was an order of 250 disks to be run from the master molds (I saw them, there are two for disks One and Two and only one master mold for disk Three!!!). The paperwork said Interplay BUT the packaging says Schoolpop (for all your educational needs), (I will provide link below!). I got home and searched the site extensively and guess what? They are SELLING THEM retail! I didn't bother looking to see if I had to be a teacher or a school employee to buy them, BUT isn't this ILLEGAL???
I mean the disk themselves SAY BUNDLED SOFTWARE NOT TO BE SOLD SEPERATELY FROM APPROVED PRODUCT. SEPERATE SALE OR DUPLICATION IS A VILOATION OF COPYRIGHT LAWS (r) 1999
Fine you may say, but they are selling them like retail seperately!!!!
One sec... if they have permission from Interplay (they might) wouldn't the disc look like a NORMAL retail disk???? Could the J&R Music World be doing something under the table cause they know how Interplay messed up in pulling it from store shelves??? Anyway you can get FS1 and silent threat packs here as well as FS2 and other stuff..
Here is what the disk looks like close up (sorry for bad webcam pic!

Here is the link to the page where schools (only I think) can order FS1 &2 and stuff!!!!! These disks are run as they are needed, keep in mind the disks you saw in my pics were MADE LAST WEEK!!! BRAND NEW!!! (Is this unbelievable or what?)
http://www.schoolpop.com/cgi/product_search.cgi?prodcat=0&search_terms=Freespace%202
IF I should keep my mouth shut fine, I am a lucky bastard  BUT as a member of the FS2 Community I felt compelled to spill my guts to you all about this and get some thoughts... Plus make this link available to those who want the game, but not at an obscene auction price, and the convienece of getting it right away... L8tr!!! Hopefully I will be aware of future orders, :drevil:

I screwed up I should have put it here but posted it in General here is the link of what happened and what I discovered about FS2 disks being made new at my work!!!

teh wierd...
-
I can't believe this is true
-
ok, i never saw a real FS2 disk, so i would like to see one of those, lying on a clearly visibly, recent newspaper, before i will believe this as a proof of life.
and, "liberating", as in robbing your employer?

I'd say so. It is the basis of the western economy after all.
And SD - this is awesome :) Even if they're only purchasable by schools, how many people are going to be playing this run of the game game? I mean, average at, what, 500 to 1000 students per school (assuming (hoping :D) they get sold to bigger ones) 250 schools, played over several years - theoretically, this could see up to 250000 kids playing FS2. Now, either we'll get a massive influx of Year 4s who come in with "I PLAYED THIS GAME AT SCOOL AND IT WAS COOL AND I KILLED THE NTFS!!!" and/or we'll get a bunch of new members who are clever enough to burn the schools copy or DL from HotU or Fractux's new full download or something, top full of ideas, and potential talent. Either way, it'll be fun :D

Schools buying computer games? Jesus Christ, our schools can barely afford books or teachers, let alone games more advanced than Simon's Castle on the BBC Micro...
-
mmmm.
/me very much wants a linux FS2 on Knoppix so he can play FS2 in school.
-
:jaw:
Well, now we know who owns the rights...
-
realy odd
-
when to my shock and delight I came across two spindels (aporx count 200 disks each ) of Freespace 2 disks One and Two!!!
FS2 was on 3 CDs.
-
you didnt read the rest did you? :blah: :doubt:
-
i can;t find the exact page where they sell the disks, it's 1000 somethng products, and it won;t let me search anything but electronics.
-
Hmm, kind of raises even more of a blur about trying to create the FS2 Open Full Intall... argg!!
I'd really like to figure out the specifics of this one!
It just seems to get more interesting all the time!
Cheers!
-
my course of action would be to contact :V: about the rights, perhaps even THQ. Or you could try and contact these guys about rights and stuff. perhaps these guys ordered this stuff from Interplay, who was out of stock or sopmething, and Interplay ordered more disks at your place SD.
infact, i think i am going to look up :V:'s email adress and start composing.

Geesh I guess I really ****ed up huh...
I shouldn't have said where I work or how this came about and just posted the damn page link anonymously right?
Of course my employer knows... they were scheduled to be ground up into dust after the run was done, so it was either take the home or watch them get destroyed...
looks like I have to go back and re-edit my post due to some of the comments I've read.. Sorry people if I offended anyone!!!
BTW the page link SHOULD get you right to where they are advertising the FS for sale... It is J&R Music World...Follow the link
http://www.schoolpop.com/cgi/product_search.cgi?prodcat=0&search_terms=Freespace%202
U tell me if this is true or not...
BTW I didn't find the disk three's at first until AFTER they were run cause it happened over the weekend I was off FRI , SAT , and SUN nights... Boss thought about it for a day and then let me take them home this morning...
-
the link gives me this:
http://www.schoolpop.com/cgi/welcome.cgi
so you've got 5 free copys of FS2 to use as master discs to copy them yourself, how nice. you've got a burner?
-
It's cut and pasted from my favorites links I book marked teh site about 3 hours ago...
If you can't get there this is what the page looks like:
http://photo.starblvd.net/Star_Dragon/1-5-2-1068506881?m=0&pg=0&ro=4&co=1
I simply did a search for Freespace 2 Kasperl, from that page you linked siimply input Freespace and a space then number 2 it takes you right to the page...
The Merchant is J & R Music World... (But don't try t search that way SIMPLY INPUT IT IN THE SMALL BLANK SEARCH BOX!!! It leads you directly to the page I did it off an on the last few hows right off of Kasperl's link.... So I know it's valid. You're just doing it wrong.
Remember there is a space between the word Freespace and the number 2.
L8tr...
BTW Yes I have a burner, but I have yet to sucessfully Backup any actual software title I own (Lord knows I am legally entiled to however, if I could get it to work). Why? what are you implying???
Of course I am keeping one set in stasis, the others will go to those who help my projects who have skills but do not have FS2.
-
well, I tried to find it on the link that it provides to the merchant, but it can't be found on that site, as far as I've tried.
-
OK, here's the thing - go to the site and search for FreeSpace 2 (with the space). You'll get 11 results, most of which are relevant. They're flogging FS battle packs as well it seems.
Anyway, SD's not happy about being called a liar to his face so I'm posting this to tell you lot that can't find the page to sort yourselves out.
-
I followed the links to J&R Music World, but couldnt find FS2 anywhere on their site... you mind asking your boss if he could produce a few copies? ;7
-
WOW!!!!!!!!!
This notice is amazing ^_^, i want to have the disks ^^
-
copy and past the link
-
meh, i can give everyone the disks if i wanted to. (and if ppl were willing to download them)
i was lookin at the stuff on my disks; there is alot of unecesary stuff on it. (cutcenes, stuff like that) we could easily make a vanilla Fs2 copy much smaller....

The HOTU version is pretty much cut as slim as you can get it.
I don't know if you've seen what I've been trying to put together.
Check it out in this thread (http://www.hard-light.net/forums/index.php/topic,18454.0.html) .
Cheers!
-
is it going to be hosted?
-
I've got to get it ready first, and get some feeback on the legality of it, but when I get it ready I'll place it on my FTP for the initial distribution.
Tolwyn offered some hosting, but I have yet to email him to confirm this.
Maybe see if fileplanet is interested if it's at all possible.
Cheers!

This thread reminds me of "New Breakthroughs" spam or "Believe it or not sex" spam. :p

yeah, this is basically what I wanted to say. maybe it came out wrong.
-
Threads merged. Pretty interesting news...
-
It wa a lucky probably once in a lifetime event I was even there, day shift rand teh previous runs also... They just happened to get so busy I guess they left the spindels out to get run for that weekend. I had been there over a year and never saw any cool games besode Wizardry 8.. Mos tof what we burn is like any of teh E-Games titles (like Mahjongg, demo derby, air racer, best of collection 251, pol ect..) so you can imagine my stunned reaction (WE MAKE THIS!?!??!? No freaking way!)
If you want to order thm then PLEASE do not try to find the merchant (I didn't find it either that way).. Simply input Freespace 2 in the search box near the top center of the schoolpop.com website and it takes you DIRECTLY to that merchant as they are the only ones selling it (Not to be offensive but I know I got a D average in English, but if a Britt like DG can find it in 5 seconds, why can't others?) :wtf:  :p :D
I wasn't looking to be immortalized or anyting but instead of keeping this to myself I decided to lay it out in the open for teh FS2 community as a possibl;e resource to order intact complete and most compelling , NEW DISKS for about $29.95 plus tax and shipping each... If they get more orders then I'm sure they will order more disks to be burnt from the master molds. As for me directly, please no requests for disks directly! I took my great gambit already and will not rock the boat at work . My employer and I had an understanding for that one time only. If thing change in the future then I will deal with it then... Just accept the above link in good faith as a valid source for disks and with my heartfelt reverance for the game and desire to see future generations "cut their teeth" on one of the greatest space fighter sims of all time... At least until PS9 comes out with full holographic mech interiors or starship bridges (I can dream huh?)
L8tr all... (Bobboau here is the link again. If you can't find it I can do nothing more)...
http://www.schoolpop.com/cgi/product_search.cgi?prodcat=0&search_terms=Freespace%202
[EDIT] OMG! I just tested it again it broguht me right to it as usual but I noticed something... Anyone need the strategy guide? :wtf: Brady Games made a walkthrough for FS  Gee I wonder if there is any info in it the community needs. I might have to spend the $11.88 to find out! (NOT! :p )...
-
mind supplying us to the merchants page for freespace 2, then? because that is the page we are having trouble finding.
-
I cant find it either. The Selling page does not link to it, or if you search for it, it is not there.
-
so in future kid's play games if that so i don't but my kid to skool (now my son is 2years old
