Has anyone played HW2 and completed this level? I'm having real problems with it...the following may contain spoilers.
I can destroy all the hyperspace inhibitors. However around the time I'm doing this I get a mix of about 15 / 20 Assault / Heavy Missile Frigates show up which nothing in my fleet can fight off. Oh sure I can take a few with me but there's simply no way I can find to take them out before they inflict massive and critical damage on my fleet.
Has anyone had any luck with this? Any suggestions at all? Since I'm so busy dealing with them that I don't get a chance to really take out the inhibitors (I could go for them... but then I'd lose my fleet and have to defend against even more frigates).
Thoughts then?

There are a bunch of people who have gotten by this mission over there. HW2 uses some kind of dynamic difficulty setting that make the enemy more or less powerful based on your fleet size/composition.
That said everything in HW2 has a counter in HW. You should have something that you can build that will allow you to whack those frigates easier. Don't use Corvettes though, Heavy Missile Frigates eat them alive.

Try this one.

Any more precise a link? I've already looked Google.com over for a decent answer to my question before posting here.
-
attack the hyperspace gates quickly so they cant send reinforcements .
-
Cheers, I took my time building an assault force at the start which might explain it... Are they really worth capturing or can I blow them to dust without worry?
-
i didnt play HW 2 through because the computer simply cheated....every time i had about 5 ion frigs funch of corvettes 2 carriers it had 6 carriers 20 frigs 40 fighter wings.....
-
Admit it, you just suck Ash. :p
HW2 was pretty easy, only a few missions were harder than should have been. But I guess that has something to do with dynamic difficulty bull****.
The trick is to counter enemy's main fleet with proper ship classes. For example, if frigates are giving you a hard time, build more anti-frigate ships. And don't send in ships which will be destroyed outright. For example, if enemy's got a lot of assault frigs, don't send poor fighters there.
Focus on enemy fleet's weaknesses. And if you notice a mission will not move onward unless you have done something which will trigger it, build up your fleet when you have the opportunity. Don't rush in.
-
I don't know about Ash sucking... I really fail to see how my meagre fleet has half a chance against 15 frigates, there's just not enough resources to properly counter such a threat and be able to move on!
That said, I'll try taking those gates out all together, re-enforcing and then taking everything in the area out before finally taking out the hyperspace inhibitors. It might work...
-
in normal HW you could actually outclass your enemies here its impossible.....
-
haven't played HW2 (yet!) but in the first game, capturing as much as possible in the earlier missions was the most important thing to do.
Using bigger ships as decoys to allow salvage corvettes (or whatever) to slip in is a favourite trick of mine.
-
The trick here is actually to capture the first Hyperspace gate you compe across and send your fleet through it while it is still strong, use the fleet to take out the 3 carriers at the other end, this seriously reduces the Vaygyr building capacity ;) Higaran corvettes suck, the Vaygyr missile corvette is about the only corvette in the came that doesn't.
Oh yes, and don't forget to use the 'N' key for minelayers and give those frigates a REALLY big surprise when they approach ;)
Flipside :D
Edit Has anyone ever captured ANYTHING in this game using a Marine Frigate that wasn't part of the plot? Much preferred the Salvage Corvette :)
-
Say..
...thats...
......thats not a bad idea...
Thanks!
-
I captured the destroyer in mission 4 were the 3 carriers are. And i captured some heavy missile frigates with luck though.
-
The salvage/capture aspect of HW2 sucked royally compared to the original homeworld. Capturing over the unit cap is the absolute only way to go, and this was purposely taken out of HW2. Plus the fact that you can only have a handful of marine frigates at a time, whereas you could have ~50 salvage 'vettes at any given time before (and they were collectively tougher, since once one attached the vessel was in effect trapped). Add to that the fact that capture vessles now occupy a frigate slot, instead of the worthless corvette slot, and you've got a system that really sucks. The developers are quoted as wanting to make capturing a more integral part of the game, but it just ended up being one obnoxious thing to look for and find you didn't have.
-
Corvettes being worthless? Hell no... In HW1 they were worthless but in HW2 they have a role. Basically every ship in HW2 has a a role, except Flak Frigates...
I am no fan of capturing enemy vessels, but I agree with you that capture vessels should take no military vessel slots. Although that's not a problem to me since I use them only when it's required for mission objective purposes. Same with HW1.
-
HW2 doesn't have ship slots like the original. You can have many ships in one class or few. Depend on the mod.
-
Are you sure? I thought in the single player game you can have 14 Fighters, 12 corvettes, 21 (I think) Frigates, 5(?) Destroyers and3 Battlecruisers.
All frigates are cannon fodder anyway, but at least they stop things shooting at your destroyers and battlecruisers ;)
Flipside :D
-
I captured the enemy Progenitor Dreadnought...had two from then on...
The last mission is hell tough...
-
I found gunships to be almost useless, but Pulsars rule and are great for hunting frigates. Use lots of them.
-
I'll agree with you there, Pulsar Corvettes are good 'gnats' they'll even take down a Carrier moderately well if you use enough :)
Torpedo Frigates are good, but the Heavy Missile frigate is the best ship of it's class (though very closesly followed by the Ion Frigate, same tactics for both), in Skirmish, I never bother to research the others :) Same with Corvettes, I just build 14 missile corvettes and have done with it, you'd be amazed the damage they can do :)
And is it me, or does the Higaran Battlecruiser absolutely rule over the pathetic Vaygyr one?
Flipside :D
-
I found that missile frigs served me better than ion frigs, especially because they can shoot down strikecraft, unlike ion frigs. By the end of the game I was building nothing but missile frigs.
-
let's see.
First I destroyed the carriers that patroled near the jumpgates. I captured one jumpgate and destroyed the rest.
Then I found their resource 'base' (3 carriers and a destroyer). After I had captured the destroyer, it was easy.
Can't really remember what my fleet was made up of, but I think there was a huge number of torp frigates.
-
Ya, I had a tough time on M04 too...but I got through it...took about a week to do it...
1 word: Mines
Use Minelayers EXCESIVELY on this mission, just plant 5 of them i front of your momship, build a HUGE wall of mines (click lay mine, and if you push...either shift, or alt the layer path will go into a complete wall, the more minelayers, the faster the mines will be planted) The wall of mines WASTED the Vaygr frigs, it only takes 3-4 mines to destroy a frig (NO JOKE) and the rest are easily mopped up with bombers and pulsars.
Also, don't build frigs in mission 3...it'll make it that much harder for you in mission 4.
Hope that helps!
Now...GO FORTH AND KICK ASS!

Funny, the only reason it took two tries to do M4 for me was because I restarted to steal the destroyer. :p
-
Gunship corvettes are good at damaging a lot of fighters over a short period of time.
Gunships and Flak frigates make a good syngery due to their splash damage.
Interceptors are better at nailing bombers then Gunship corvettes alone, but Gunships do allow for good space superiority support.
As for the last mission being hell comment, *SPOILER*:
Sajuuk can make hyperspace jumps. The central Vaygr Battlecruiser fleet if they have line of sight with their trinity cannons can destroy even Sajuuk. Make a hyperspace jump to nail the shipyards while your fleet engages the BCs. Pulsars are great for shooting down the planet killer warheads.
-
pulsar gunships help immensely..
-
Actually quite a good way of defending your mothership is a mixture of Minelayers and Gun Turrets, don't worry about Ion turrets.
I just wish Mines lasted longer :(

Well, After three tries, I'm still stuck at Mission 4. But I did notice something though.
Firstly, there are 2 Vagyr Carriers patrolling between the three Hyperspace Inhibitor Asteroids. At the beginning of the mission, the Carriers are not producing anything probably de to researching or something. I think this is the best time to whack those Carriers. These Carriers are the source of the troubles in the early part of the mission and were the death of everything Hiigaran in that mission.
Secondly, the Hyperspace Inhibitors seem to be vulnerable to Fighters and Bombers only. Torpedo Frigates can't seem to take down their health that fast.
By the way, you all mentioned a Vagyr Destroyer in that mission. Where is it anyway?
-
If you capture a hyperspace gate it will lead you to it. Alternatively, you can just explore the resource pocket off in front and to the left of the starting location (past the inhibitors), that's where it leads.
Oh, and I will say, I am overall quite dissapointed with Homeworld 2. It has absolutely no replay value. HW1 still rocks in that department, even after playing through the second one. IMHO reducing the effectiveness of capture was what killed it, but saying that doesn't do much of anything. Of course, there really is nothing quite like jumping in to Hiigara with like 6 Heavy Cruisers, 18 destroyers (standard and missile), 20 multibeam frigates, and enough ICF's to not all be visable onscreen at once, plus 50 salvage corvettes. The imperials can't send enough ships to prevent them all being captured. And in the end, surrounding the flagship with your massive fleet (which has nearly doubled from all the capturing in the last level) and clicking to watch like 300 beams of death (many of them from imperial ships) slice the emporer up into bite-sized pieces. You just can't replicate that in HW2.
-
Okay guys. I just replayed Mission 4 again and found out some interesting stuff.
The Hyperspace Inhibitors can be taken down very very fast with 5 squadrons of Bombers. Make sure to research the Improved Bombs upgrade for the Bombers.
Secondly, if you are fast enough like what I did, you can take out the two Vagyr Carriers patrolling between the three Hyperspace Inhibitor asteroids. I managed to destroy the Carriers with 5 squadrons of Pulsar Corvettes and 4 Torpedo Frigates. I also brought along 6 Flak Frigates to take care of enemy fighters and bombers. Though I suffered heavy losses, I think the gambit was worth it. No more enemy ships came my way for about 15 minutes. Used my 5 squadrons of Bombers to take out 2 of the 3 Hyperspace Inhibitor asteroids and captured 1 Hyperspace Gate while I destroyed the other 2 gates. Continued to build up my Torpedo Frigate andFlak Frigate strike force. Also built a Marine Frigate to capture the Vagyr Destoyer. After I thought it was enough, I jumped to the Destroyer's position thru the Hyperspace Gate.
Once on the other side, used my frigates to provide distraction while my Marine Frigate sneaked in to capture the Destroyer. Well, not exactly sneak in because by the time it reached the Destroyer, it had about half its hit points left. Once I got the Destroyer, the surrounding 3 Vagyr Carriers were mopped up by my newly acquired Destroyer and what was left of my strike force.
I thought the rest was going to be a cake walk since I had a new source of resources to mine. Was getting low on RUs. Then I checked my Sensor Manager and that was the end. I saw 6 Vagyr Missile Frigates closing on Pride of Hiigara's position. With just a slightly damaged Vagyr Destroyer, a Flak Frigate and 3 Torpedo Frigates left, I knew it was hopeless.
Where the hell are all those Missile Frigates coming from anyway?! They come out from an assembly line or something?!
-
There is a shipyard near the Station.
-
No wonder. Taking out those Carriers took up a lot of resources already. Even if I could repeat the same tactic, I don't think I would have enough resources to stage a strike on the Command Centre and the Shipyard and what ever forces are protecting those enemy assets.
-
Those Frigates are annoying little bastards, as they always seem to come at you right when your mothership is least defended. You have no effective counter to them at the time either, which is extremely annoying. You should keep a couple of bomber squads around at all times for this exact reason.
-
They are already in the mission, it's the "Dynamic Difficulty". If you have a big fleet, then the enemy has a bigger one.
I beat the game, it was fun, Mission 4 is a cake walk compared to mission 9...trust me...you're fretting over a 6 HMFrigs? you'll be pulling your hair out by the time you're at M09...trust me...it's harder...
Cor
-
Or M12 for that matter
-
Hahaha...Okay. I'll keep that in mind.
*Makes note to have at least 5 squadrons of Hiigaran Bombers in the Pride of Hiigara's launch bays at all times*
Hmmm...that would be about 3000 credits...
-
lol i dont mean to sound like im bragging but i got HW2 and then 3 days later I had it finished. And no I wasnt playing it non-stop. Probably a fair bit on the third day but yeh...
I found it a little too easy, and once you finish the campaign it becomes very difficult to find something to do with it unless you play in multi, but I just got my but whooped on that so I don't really play it much any more.
All this talking about it though makes me wonder if there was a glitch in the difficulty figure-outa, cause sure some missions took 2 or 3 goes but in the end it was abit short and simple. Enemy has this you send in that you win. Game Over. Plus I was hording battle cruisers near the end so that helped a bit. But yeh.
Maybe I'll go play through it again now, see if it gets any harder for me.
btw which one is m04? been a while since iv played it last...
-
Eh, I just blow everything up. Finished it in one try. But hey, thats what you get for living with Tiara for so long ;)
-
m09 is a *****, needed to replay it a few times before i made it.
-
Whenever I need a morale booster from being defeated in Mission 4, I just go to "Player VS CPU" and trash the computer's ass there.
Then I go back to Mission 4 for more humiliating defeat.
-
I didn't have allot of frigates in M4 mostly allot of fighters and corvettes. With most upgrades completed.
-
What were your losses like anyway? With your force made up of fighters and corvettes, you must have lost a lot. Hiigaran Interceptors and Bomber can be eaten up rather quickly by anti-fighter frigates.
-
My fighters/bomers squads were almost totaly wiped out but most of my corvettes were alive. Ofcourse i did use 3/4 frigs to flank them. Then i waited to rebuild my fighters/bombers and some extra corvettes, captured the vagyer destroyer then killed the last inhibitor left and jumped to the station.
-
Then when you reached the station, what happened? Did you happened to see the Vagyr Shipyard as well?
-
Yes when you attack the shipyard it starts to move away slowly but that aint a problem. I did destroye the Frigate module to get less trouble from there frigates. There is also a carrier just beyond the station its mostly sending out fighters.
-
Hmmm...I'm still trying to find a winning strategy that will give me a victory with less losses...
-
You past the inhibitors?
-
Yeah. Then my Mothership and forces hyperspace to the Command Centre to be confronted with a horde of Missile Frigates, Bombers, Lancer Fighters and Assaults.
The ending is pretty obvious.
-
It's virtually impossible to win without heavy losses. My victory was a fluke where, before the heavy fleet arrived, I sent my entire forces on a one-way hyperspace out to meet it.
Only, I missed them and instead ran into the Command Station defense forces. This caused them to split their forces, while I built up defense platforms (they're expensive, but the only way to bolster your forces once you hit unit cap). My guys got torn to shreds ... but the bad guys got shredded more.
-
I encounterd them before i even destroyed the last hyperspace inhibitor. Did got heavy losses but i had enough time to rebuild before i destroyed the command center from there it was prety easy to complete the mission.
-
So, after the destruction of the Command Centre, there is still three fleets to fight off?
-
The last mission is stupidly easy...
all you need are 3 interceptor squadrons and Sdjuk (however its spelt)
-

As far as i know you only need to destroy the shipyard and the rest of the vayger fleet in that part.
-
So, the fleet will come in after you destroy the Command Centre, right?
-
Wel once you destroyed those pile of frigates its easy to get rid of the rest.
-
I don't think so.
Vagyr Missile Frigates do more damage than the Hiigaran Torpedo Frigates. Vagyr Missile Frigates do a damage of 351 point per volley. Hiigaran Torpedo Frigates do about 305 points of damage only. You will have to use numbers to win this mission.
-
Thats why i went after the frigate/capship modules so they don't bring in any of caps in for a while. So you have time to destroy the commstation and then the shipyard.
-
I found that bombers are the best units to destroy subsystems. Corvettes and above are useless in this department.
-
True they are good for that when you researched "improved Bomb" I dumped allot of ships on the subsystems and the modules went out faster. And the frigates were bombing the station.
-
The main problem is getting through the base defenders. There is so many of them!
