Title: Seems I found my way here. And a question.
Post by: Johnmike on November 01, 2003, 04:18:15 pm
Yay!  An active FS2 community.  You guys rule.

Now, after my (minimal) introduction, a question.

I want to know if you would be able to give me the ISO's or something to the CD's of FS2.  As for the legality of that, I find that there is an open source FS2 development in the works, and it would make little difference of which version I have.  I would defenately prefer an ISO version.  If it is possible, tell me.  Don't yell at me for asking.

Well the fact that something is open source doesn't automatically mean that the CD's can be given away for free.

In this case however we are trying to get ISO/a full install of FS2 working and available for download. In fact Fractux has one already but we are waiting to see if it can legally be distributed.

In the meantime there is the HotU version. Click on the link below and have a look at the HotU page of my FAQ for details on how to get it and on how to turn it into a full install.

you prefer FS origonal over the SCP!?
what, are you?!

The latest SCP is 1000x10e18 times better than the original. My favorite, and the most obvious, are the engine trails.

If Fractux can legally distribute copies of it, all i want are the cutscenes in .MVE format... the AVI ones are all messed up.

Understood.  The reason for my wanting the original isn't at all because of the functionality.  I, being me, automatically assume it's buggy.  I suppose I should have asked, so I will now, are there any serious bugs in the open source version?  If so, I'll download it.  I don't want to sound like a newbie, and I appologise if I'm a little irritating.  I don't know much about the community.  Thanks.

Edit:

I also forgot to ask.  What's the difference between the HOTU and the Freespace 2 Open Source project?  And it is Freespace 2 and not 1, correct?

Gods, I feel like a newbie asking all of these questions at you.

First, try appreciating what the SCP offers.

Secondly, download it and see for yourself.

Version 3.5.5 is a very clean build - actually it has solved some of the original bugs FS2 was suffering from.

If you care to try it download the launcher - the new one the SCP staff made - and setup the program before running.
You'll also need the new media VP (not too big) to see the new features (glowmaps, shinemaps - unfortunately no one made a really good set of those for FS2 ships, so you might want to disable them).

Beside the 3.5.5 the staff has recently finished the HT&L conversion of FS_Open.
What this means is that if you have a graphics card supporting this feature, the game's speed will increase tenfold (anything above GeForce2 IIRC).
New features are also present in the HT&L version - the said engine trails, the new engine and glow effects along with 32bit textures, that look better in close proximity.
The downside is that these versions are not us bug free as 3.5.5 - though by now they are playable and in theory you shouldn't encounter anything serious. Moreover the SCP team is working around the clock *as long as Real Life(TM) doesn't interfere- to fix all the remining bugs.

New features are also created every couple of weeks.

It is rumored Bobbau, Sticks and the rest of the graphic gurus are working on pixel shaders.

The SCP are only replacing the .exe files for FS2 so if you want to actually play the game you need a retail copy to install the SCP version over. That's where HotU comes in :) HotU have a rip of the retail version of FS2.

Again, welcome to HLP. I appreciate your desire for vanilla FS2 - in fact, if you have the bandwidth, I highly encourage you to get the original Volition version - it will make you appreciate the SCP infinitely more. :)

What specs are the PC you're running? After you get the HOTU version, if you're not too fussy, you can run FS2 at 640x480 and run FSAA over it - looks pretty good (I like it better, actually). At least, until you get the high-res files. :)

if by ISO you mean the ones sold at stores they are legal to cxopy for friends as longfs as they are not sold. And any member of hlp is a friend of mine ;)

It is legal for only the FS series, never heard of another game like that.

You know, I have yet to actually find the product on that website... and I've looked several times.  Has anyone else actually found a link to buy the game?

His link leads you to the product page but mine doesn't why is that???? I am AT the J&R page and posting hte correct link, but people end up at the home page for the 1000 merchants???

I just clicked on my posted link now at 2:02 pm Mon Nov 3rd and it brought me right to here (postic pic I took of webpage)

I can send you a set (in generic thin cases) No books or Artwork, the only thing missing would be the paper insert for schoolpop.com (a huge yellow ugly thing with blue letters and a tiny white lable stickered on saying (Decent Freespace 2)...

USE that (PM me for more details. I can practically walk to my PO and have the cases I need already).

NOTE that I am willing to do this for you alone as whatever materials I have left are for tose who help my projects in the future when thier disks die. (So please no MASS posts or Pm's about "please send to me also") ty...

I don't think so dude, sorry. Your best bet is to try and piece it together, and forego the high-res textures for a while - AFAIK, those are the hardest to come by, mostly because of their size (pain to upload).

Aarhg.  I extracted everything, deleted all of the files in the readme.  This is the VB files like warble and sparky.  The launcher won't detect the hi-res files.
