Title: Freespace Community (New People)
Post by: DeepSpace9er on November 02, 2003, 09:17:59 am
Im sure everybody here has noticed this but i thought id take the liberty to say something about it.

Its no secret... the community is on the verge of exploding. Ive seen more new people in the past week or so than i have seen join since i came aboard a few months ago. Most likely because of the release of the Inferno mod, more people that thought FS was dead have had a second thought.

To see how many new people have joined or are joining, I would like to ask all newbies to the forum to post here. Dont make your posts long, and please spare the beams for other posts. Please only post once too. :)

Glances around...

Well I know what you mean. It's good to see so many new people having a look at FreeSpace - even better that so many have found HLP! If this trend continues we could have some very interesting times ahead...

Now is the best time to pimp to gaming mags.

(Someone call up Baranec first.)

Good idea really, FS2 gets some pretty decent coverage from time to time in games magazines... the last time it happened was for Inferno or The Babylon Project I think... the SCP should blow them away!

I'm not sure - it was either Inferno of TBP...

It was TBP;)

Bah.  I feel like I've done absolutely nothing in my *counts* 3-4 years in this community...

Except for that one time when I had an Osiris with BGreen on top and Flak on the bottom, before SCP was even heard of.

It will be bigger still...

I just found several FS2 Crackpots (who want to mod) and gave them the link to HLP!:D

yeah, now would be the best time to pimp the gaming magazines. i agree with that. There is a huge potential freespace community out there. Infact, if pushed enough, interplay may begin producing freespace 2 cd's again. (Though hope for a sequel is far too out there, heh)

Theres a mass ammount of freespace 2 junkies out there. And we've got to harvest 'em all.

You might want to try to teach yourself -- you might pick something useful up. :)

Already introduced myself.  I just randomly found this site, really.  It's not related to mods at all.

I do not think Interplay will produce FS2 disks anymore unless they get the rights back. My factory BURNED and packaged 250 sets of NEW FS2 disks in generic plastic packaging for schoolpop.com, the page for MJ Music world... at $29.99 apiece...

I too have been pimping around, especially Robotech II shots, in the gundam, and star trek communities, as well as some 3d websites...

Hopefully thse efforts will bear new fruit.

In italy (as in the rest of the world, I think)  the monthly pc magazines are usually sold with one or two cds, containing demos and often a free semi-recent game.
I think that when the HT&L build will be officially released and will be as much bug free as possible, we could try to propose to magazines to release as a free game fs2, with fso, additional artwork (glowmaps, shinemaps etc), and a collection of the best mods
Only problems could be the space of all this stuff and :v: willing to sell fs2 on magazines

I'll see if i can send in a review or 2 to one of gaming magazines in here. Perhaps if i send a pic in of an episode with SCP and the 32bit Textures, it might help...

*goes to fred a mission which has the colossus looking really cool on a good background :D*

actually I disagree
I would avoid to pimp fso using shots of models built for a 5 years old engine. At least the original models could be useful to show the differences between fso and fs2.
I'd rather use some mods, maybe from tbp, or I would wait for the first models built for the HT&L system to be released (and I know there are many in progress)

But i dont have any of the models, so :p about that.
Seriously tho, I prefer the FS2 vanilla ships- especially the fighters when it comes to close up shots.
These ships have and will be the mainstay of the Freespace campaign, and are a part of what everyone has played in FS2 till today. They may not be super-cool as Inferno or other mods, but at least they'll be around as long as Freespace is

It beats Russias...

"Hey, I'd like to keep you up to date about all the new changes in the FreeSpace2 community. We've ripped the source code to shreds and there's a lot of new cool stuff out..."

"Ahh! Motherland!!"

then again I raise my propose of a screenshots quest, or alternatively a screenshot project.
I mean to select a group of people with a good hardware that will take many shots (and will continue to do so as new features are implemented), with these objectives:
1-show the differences between fs2 and fso using standard fs2 ships
2-show the artwork of the best mods using FSO
3-show the full potential of FSO using mods specifically built to use FSO at its limits
These shots could be used as a base to pimp FSO in the other communits and in the magazines, because I'm sorry but you will NEVER get the right attention if you don't show your best, and models of about 400 polys will cause only ironical laughs instead of curiosity.
The pimping activity that I've seen so far suffered a lot of the lack of the use of the best artwork (wich is somehow already present)
I also suggest to choose some people to write a small article about fs2, the community, fso, the mods, that could be used as a standard message for those who want to contact magazines or pimp on other communities.

well, you may be right about that
I just took several pics with the SCP features (including 32bit textures and stuff) and some of them were fantastic! (they can be found at www.geocities.com/anandraj_singh_d/SCPpics.zip copy and paste and be warned- it is around 700kb)

But these models are quite limited, and make some of the SCP features look like well.....not-so-good.
