... or the original C&C?
I've found that it's still possible to play RA over Gamespy, and so presumably C&C as well.
Anyone fancy a game some time?
-
I do.
But I have XP.
-
Bugger.

I had it working on XP. I think you can download a patch for it.
Or it might have been compatibility mode, either way I played it on XP before.
-
Yeah, I know. I reaally want to play RA again. RA2 just didn't have the same charm as RA, which actually felt like it could be WW2 (ver 2.0 ).
Cruisers are l33t.

Got link? And compatibility mode?
-
i know that in windows 98 and such you can bypass windows on bootup or something. i don't know if its possible under XP. i used that method to play doom and other ancient games i had
-
AFAIK it can't be done with XP, due to MS's belief that people don't play old games anymore.
-
That seems a little out of character.
-
For me or for MS?
-
'Soft.

Go to Red Alert's website, think the patch was there.
Now that I recall, I had CnC working, but without sound...
-
That's where C&C95 comes into it's own.
-
The EA RA site runs me around in circles for updates..
-
I want my Red Alert icons back.... they were the coolest, but I can't install it on this computer to access them, grr. Have to use the old computer and transfer them over floppy, I guess. Pain in the butt.....

*listens to Hell March*

*Listens to CnC21
God I love that track.
-
The original C&C's tracks were the best IMHO.
-
I got the whole World Warfare pack. C&C classic with Covert Operations and Red Alert with Aftermath and Counterstrike.
I think they're both better than Tiberian Sun.
-
Tiberian Sun was ****. The acting could have told us that. Poor James Earl Jones..
-
I have entire C&C series.
And Hell March IS great.
-
Face the Enemy is better. ;)
-
None of these C&C games have really given me as much enjoyment as Dune 2 did on the Amiga. Red Alert 2 in particular is just plain strange.
-
I've got Red Alert.
no, I can't come out and play with you, unfortunately. I'm busy doing "nothing".

I was never keen on RA2. It just didn't feel right.
Generals isn't that good, either.
And if no one can join, never mind, I'll just keep playing skirmished until the AI actually builds a radar dome, something I've only seen about a dozen times in all my years of RA.

I love it when they give up, sells everything and storms me with all they have, including the harvester.
-
Indeed. I've just had a quick game on Central Conflist Extreme, and they would keep rushing me with all sorts of stuff, light tanks, APCs, you name it. Of course, I had more turrets near bridges and so on, so they had no chance.
For once they didn't do the usual thing and fill their base with useless vehicles, so that the harvesters can't get in or out.
-
i have it, but i ain't got no time no more.
-
This seems to happen with every game I try and get a game of. I seem to be the only person I know of with the ability to put gaming before real matters.
It's not entirely a good thing...
-
who said I prioritize real matters? I just have other non-important matters that isn't gaming. like, ehr... listening to moloko and browsing boards.
-
well, i have homework, cleaning my room, checking these boards, eating, sleeping and stuff like that.
-
Well they do say that cleanliness is next to Godliness, but being an atheist, well...
-
Yes, RA2 would have been great if it were less sci-fi drama and more WWIII action. Generals played out like it would in real life, save for the terrorist mega faction with uber-tanks...

I agree, the original grunge army industrial music rocked. It always got me pumped up for the battles ahead. I think good ol' classic C&C/C&C95 are still the best. They should just remake them with updated graphics and expanded multiplayer and release it.. I'd buy it, for 40 bucks even, provided that they didn't screw up the units/balance/classic goodness that the original had. Also, the videos before the missions are fantastic, especially for their time.

Might I just say...

I spent hundreds of hours making mods and singleplayer missions for RA around five years ago. I started making changes to the Future Wars mod out there but added so many new things that it almost became an entirely different mod. I spent a long time modifying the AI as well; although I couldn't really make him smarter, I was at least able to build more of everything.
I had couple of these unusual maps as well; one used the same terrain as that "The Hills Have Eyes" map but had all of the players allied at the start and fighting one extra computer in the middle that had a gigantic base, with everyone winning if that computer was destroyed. Another had a large river going through the map and had a big fleet of ships come onto the map every 20 minutes and go through the river, attacking anything on the way, and then leave through the other side; the player(s) also saw a timer on the screen that counted down the time until the next fleet arrival. Pity I lost all of the mods during a computer screwup once, although I found some of the maps and some screenshots.
