My 8x DVD-ROM drive just randomly decided to stop working on me. It was working fine, went to eat dinner, surfed online for a bit, then when I went to go play Civ 3, it caused the program to stop responding. Now it causes any program that attempts to read data from the drive to stop responding. Any ideas on how to fix it?

You know, this is probably what I get for using the DVD-ROM drive from the Gateway that this computer replaced.....
-
well DVD-ROM drives are pretty cheap nowadays, if it's any comfort :)

Buy a DVD/CD-RW combo drive. They're about £40 on EBuyer.

Yeah. That's exactly why I replaced most of the parts. Now that the DVD-ROM drive is dead, the only parts remaining are the floppy drive, the modem, and the sound card (Sound Blaster Live! Value :p )

Sorry to hear it. I have a Samsung, came with the box, but ain't bad. LG makes my burner...
I'd recommend either, since they both work beautifully. :)

The old P200 my parents used to own (until I got hold of a cheap P550 for them) is now 8 years old and only has four original components: the case, the power unit, the 512Mb hard disk, and the Multimedia Pro 16AB (ISA) sound card. Everything else has been replaced at least once (it used to be a P60).
Now it has DOS 7.1 installed and occupies one corner of my room. Once I get an analogue joystick, I'm gonna play Descent 1 and 2 on it. And network it with the six computers that the University is throwing out...

Took your advice, and I have a Samsung 16x DVD-ROM drive on its way.
