Title: Computer Humor
Post by: Goober5000 on November 03, 2003, 09:15:25 pm
No, it's not the usual spam. ;) I stumbled upon the Backspace (http://www.pcmag.com/category2/0,4148,2075,00.asp) section of PC Magazine a while ago, and it's provided many entertaining snapshots of techie non sequiturs.  Here are a few select examples:

And two examples of odd juxtaposition of news and advertisements...

Nice, I like it!

Reminds me of the "burn baby, burn" image for ZIP Disk writers that showed up next to a story about a child that died in a house fire.

That's funny, I just got this forward yesterday:

On computer languages:

Feel free to add entries for your language of choice. Here's mine: :D

J2EE: You want to shoot yourself in the foot, but when you try you realize you need to request both the gun and the foot from an object factory. You do it and try again, to find out that the context wasn't properly initialized, so the bullet is lost between the gun and your foot. You initialize the context and try again, only to get a TriggerPullException, being caused by excessive pull on the trigger. You adjust it to pull the trigger more slowly, and it works - completely blowing your feet off. Yes, both of them.

Oh, and a pretty cool one by Dreamer2001 from SB:

Perl: You shoot yourself in the foot in an ingeniously brief and efficient way. You fail to document, come back to the code a year later and, being unable to decypher the command, run it and accidentally shoot yourself in the other foot. Dammit.

'Windows NT crashed.
I am the Blue Screen of Death.
No one hears your screams.'

Seen this before.  On the 'Jargon File'.

A guy at my college hacked Windows to add this to the BSOD.  The technician's reaction was... funny...

actually hacking windows to add this to the BSOD.

well, i geus you need a hobby, but it's pretty damn funny.

also, would it be possible to create a BSOD in the startup/shutdown screen format? that would be really, really fun.

 "This just goes to show that Microsoft continues to innovate at a much faster pace than open source. I have yet to see any evidence that Linux even has a BSOD, let alone a customizable one."

I like that program languages humour page, Styxx. Pity there isn't one for Python. :D

well, linux has a BSOD, as a screensaver.

it comes with RH9, as a combo of the BSOD, the Mac variant, the OS/2 variant, and some other OS's i can't remember

I heard somewhere that if you screw the kernel up (i.e. change some source code) you can get a linux BSOD. I've never seen it myself. Closest thing I've seen is a kernel panic.

allowing them to instead have a Mauve Screen of Death or even a Paisley Screen of Death

It's actually possible to do that, on Windows 98 at least. I'm not sure how to do it exactly but I'm positive I noticed the option when I was browsing the X-Setup plug-ins once.

It's also possible to make Windows 2000 (and possibly XP as well although I've never tried it) crash on command (USER_INITIATED_CRASH or something is the code) by (I think) holding the Ctrl key and pressing Scroll Lock twice. This "feature" is (naturally) disabled by default (it's controled through a registry key) but an X-Setup plug in also exists to change that.
