X28 Class solar flare, largest solar flare in recorded obersvational history! Suprasses the former record holder X20's of 1989 and 2001
http://science.slashdot.org/article.pl?sid=03/11/06/1246259&mode=thread&tid=134
the last 10 days have been the most active period on the sun since recording started
-
w00t! :D
-
no it's not squarely directed at earth though.. no major aurora events from this one
had it been targeted directly at us they probably would have been able to see both the southern and nothern lights at the equator!!!!
(and we would have had power grid failures, satellites destroyed, etc)
-
Sun is been very active lately:)
-
Shame really, I mean sure it would've caused damage but it'd be nice if humans were put in their place once in a while and realised they should stop killing eachother and worry about things like this instead :)

it's pointless to worry about things you can't do anything about.
-
I'm fairly sure any country would worry about its defences if the sun started knocking out satellites and power ;)

yeah, but there'd be no point to do it.

the X28 was not directed tword earth - the AR10486 is about to go around to the far side of the sun - so it's on the sun's westering limb
AR10486 (or AR 486 for short) has been the most active AR (Active Region) ever recorded
-
a few thing happened. a japanese sattelite got knocked out.
-
i think there may be some sathani hiding on the far side of Sol .....
-
Yeah, and the moon is made out of cheese.
-
uhh well i hope the sun explodes.....soon im SO tiered fo school :p
-
What if Sol is building toward a nova?
Not a Supernova, just a nova.
-
Naaaa... we are at the end of the 11 year Cycle of the sun, hence all the activity. Believe me, an impending Nova would be producing FAR more spectacular effects ;)
Flipside :D
-
*cough*

The shivans have created an enormus subspace field rippling from the Juggernaught fleet. Though we can not detect this field with our instruments...the suns intensity has been encreasing slowly over the past 240 hours.

What's the difference? (pardon my idiocy)
And if the sun goes haywire, we're all ****ed anyways, so why worry? :)
(I can't decide if that's a positive or negative attitude!)
-
SuperNova = star completely freaking explodes destroying itself
Nova = star ?temporarily? increases in diameter - more or less an explosion - but the star remains and doesn't blow away all it's planets, just the inner ones (like earth)

Why does everything always happen to us? :(
-
A nova is a nuclear reaction on the surface of a star due to gasses being pulled to it. Anyhow, it's not as bad as people make it out to be.

Yes it is! We freeze to death!

It's not. The sun is too young for that sort of thing (yet).

Sheer luck.
Aliens must think that Earth is the Alabama of the galaxy. Especially judging by the kind of people they abduct. Usually (but not always) some inbred, redneck, 3/4 retard out in the middle of nowhere...

Hey!
Have you ever been here?
Alabama is a great place to live.
We're not the rednecks that everybody thinks we are. Yeah, there are a few around, but they're usually from way out in the middle of nowhere.
I like to think we're less pretencious than other, more cosmopolitan states.
Yeah, we've got some problems, but it's mostly because our State government is pretty corrupt and now that we've finally got an honest Governor, most people don't trust him.
I sincerely suggest that you come visit us on your next vacation.

meh, georgia is kewler :P
poor you, livin down in Alabamastan....... ;)
-
Yeah, everybody says that. People come to Alabama and expect us to be like Georgia economically. What everybody keeps forgeting is that the largest city in the state, Birmingham, has fewer than 700,000 citizens counting the 'burbs. I mean the state as a whole has about 4.5 or 5 million people living in it, with about 60% of those able to work and contribute to the public coffers. By contrast Georgia has Atlanta which , by itself, has almost half the population of Alabama, when you throw in the rest of the state, Georgia has a lot more people to generate an economy.
One bright spot, Alabama has the lowest state income tax in the US. Less monies for Education:(, and the general populace is to scared of Montgomery Insiders to allow a tax increase. I could go on, but suffice to say that Montgomery is infamous for making under the table deals. A large portion of the state budget is tied up in legislation, which doesn't allow it to be moved to a line item that needs it.

It doesn't. For instance Shoemaker-Levy went after Jupiter instead. :)

In 5 billion years the Sun will impolde (turn into a nova).
The Earth will first be fryed, then frozen, and then engulfed by the Sun. Have a nice day!:D

Actually the Earth will be burnt to a crisp when Sol goes through its red giant phase (it might be engulfed) then frozen.

Great, the Earth is a giant marshmellow. Oh well, *breaks out the hershey's and crackers*. Lets make some S'MORES!
