Title: Swooh?
Post by: TopAce on November 07, 2003, 02:56:38 pm
What's going on with swooh again? I cannot open my account, access my FTP. Even I am unable to step on the site itself. Is it only with me, or you cannot see it as well?

it's you.

it's me too.

so you cannot enter swooh as well?
Just both of your sentences are against each other.

i don't know how many times i have to say that swooh goes down occasionally and that it's nothing to worry about.

Even when it's working perfectly, I worry about it.

........A server crash is nothing to worry about?
Title: Swooh?
Post by: Knight Templar on November 07, 2003, 06:09:35 pm
Apparently not when it happens four times a month..

Post by: an0n on November 07, 2003, 06:11:14 pm
If it's four consecutive occasions then I suppose it's okay. I mean we can't get annoyed at Stealth for PMS'ing and kicking the server.

He is hosting our stuff for free...with no ads and stuff. I don't mind it being down a lot.:nervous:

What kind of admin would let the server crash 4 times a month? Especially a linux admin. Methinks you need to "motivate" the admin with a very dull plastic knife.

Well, we are getting what we've paid for.:D

EDIT:

*sigh*

an0n, Knight_Templar, and Killfrenzy:  You all should know (i'd expected you particularly an0n) that just because you can't access a server doesn't mean it's "crashed"... Swooh goes offline for many reasons, sometimes ISP problems, sometimes we take it offline physically to upgrade or whatever, and sometimes we take it publicly offline remotely for reasons you don't need to know... swooh is not crashed... its webserver aspect is still functioning, you can still download and view files/webpages, so there's no major problem... it's just the FTP server that's offline, which is no biggie temporarily!

You see, this service is 100% free.  we don't require popups, ads, banners, or any form of advertisement... we don't require you even state you're hosted by us... now if you were paying for it, you'd have ever right to ***** when it goes offline, but unfortunately you don't, so when it goes offline, you have no right to start complaining.  if you're unhappy with the service you're getting, then please... leave.  send me a PM and i'll be more than happy to remove your account.

Guys, this is the only a) cost-free, b) ad-free, c) unlimited (practically) capacity web hosting service I have ever seen, anywhere.  I'm actually astonished that it comes with no strings attached.  Don't be antagonistic -- Stealth is doing this out of his own good graces and deserves to be treated respectfully. :)

Post by: Kamikaze on November 07, 2003, 11:24:17 pm
Eh? You'd sound better if you left out the temper and insults.

Anyhow, sure, it's a free service, but people are bound to complain if you don't explain problems routinely. Not that that makes you obligated to anything, but you really need to accept that it's people's nature to ***** like hell.

So... uhhh.. cool off.
Title: Swooh?
Post by: Stealth on November 07, 2003, 11:28:09 pm
thank you goober... at least some people can appreciate.

to tell you the truth, we've been having major problems with the ISP... they've got a router that keeps screwing up, and they're too lazy or just don't care to permanently fix it... which is why swooh's been going down a lot lately (though not near as often as four times a month, as the ignorant Knight_Templar has stated).  we were thinking of all putting money together on a monthly basis and buying a dedicated (or semi-dedicated) T1 line for Swooh... but it's events such as this thread that make me want to just say "fuck it" and let everyone just get hosted on Geocities or Tripod or something.  We don't benefit from doing this... it's being done 100% for you, the community... you're the reason swooh is hosting people... you're getting more space than any service on the internet for free, PLUS you don't have to have any banners or anything, and you can host any kind of file, and link to the file, all for free... what more can you ask for?  I'm sorry, but i'm doing my best... more than that i cannot do.  unfortunately swooh goes offline (sometimes it's the FTP server, sometimes the web server, sometimes both) sometimes, but never for a long period of time, and like i said before, you get good bandwidth, hosting size, and everything else...

i'm doing my best.  i'm sorry if it's not good enough for all of you, but i really would have hoped that i'd get a little more support when things like this happen

See my previous reply about Swooh not "crashed"... in all the time swooh's ever been up it's never once crashed, and it's been up 2+ years.

You can't give people broken toys.

Nor can you whine about it when they come to you saying your defective toy took their eye out.

it's not a toy, it's a service.  they're guaranteed nothing... and although we try to keep it running as well as we can, some things (i.e. ISP problems) are above our control.

we're all doing our best.

hah.  you're ignorant.

1)  when the ISP goes down, swooh continues to run.  therefore the server is or offline... it's not crashed... it continues to run

2)  Swooh is not "crashed" or "down"... if you check, it's still running, just the FTP server's down.

There are two reasons why stuff doesn't work. Either you took it down intentionally and are therefore purposely depriving people of a service which they need to administrate the **** you've given them; Or because something dun ****ed up.

Now, when the latter is expressed somewhat colloquealy and in a generalized manner so as to eliminate the need to endlessly list the various faults, malfunctions and causes of disruption, it comes out as: CRASHED.

you need to learn the definition of a "crashed computer"... (and just to help you out:  a crashed computer is not a computer that is still running and has been running for months!!!... )

come back when you have

Nope. Don't think I do.

If you wanna offer people stuff that doesn't work, then by all means, go right ahead. I don't give a ****. Keep being a dumb-ass and denying the faults in both your software, hardware and personality.

Anyway, I'm declaring this the last word in the matter, and seen as it's the last word and all, I think it should be somewhat special:

CRASHED

software, hardware and personaltiy... wow, how creative.  very funny.  hehe...  the only dumass here is the one that decides a computer's "crashed" just because he cannot access it ... we all know who that person is, right?

now, listen up and carefully an0n, i really have no time, nor desire to sit here and argue with you whether a crashed computer is a computer that's running or is not running...

and you have no room to complain about swooh until you start offering similar services (i.e. 100MB to anyone and everyone that wants it).  since that hasn't happened yet, (and i doubt it will) you're just sitting here making a fool of yourself...

i've explained why swooh's FTP server is down, and i've also reminded everyone what to expect from swooh (i.e. not perfect service, since swooh is run out of our pockets, and we're high-school/college students... i promise you if we had more money we'd have a better server, but for now that's all we have).

Hahaha. You just don't get it do you?

And I don't think I need point out the irony in that quote, do I?

do you not know what a router?  do you not know how ISPs use routers? forget it...

hah.  did you bother reading my last post?  i don't have to explain my words/actions/swooh's problems to you.  you apparently don't understand them anyway, so there's no point.
Title: Swooh?
Post by: an0n on November 08, 2003, 12:03:27 am
Nope. You've just got to explain them to all the poor people who're desperate enough for webspace that they put up with your shoddy service.

And I'm not trolling. Trolling is picking random fights and using course language to harass, berate or intimidate other users.

This is a very specific fight where I am merely pointing out the flaws in both your use of the English language and your shoddy services. And since I have not attempted any form of personal 'verbal' attack on you and as you do not appear to be intimidated by my vastly superior intellect, this entire escapade amounts to little more than me telling you that your shoddy service is not adequate and you agreeing with that assesment whilst professing it doesn't need to be.

Also, it is somewhat confusing that you question wether I read your last post when the fact that I quoted it suggests I almost certainly did.

OK i'm leaving.  no sense sticking around for a troll to throw attempts at insults etc. at me.

but i would like to apologize to everyone that relies on Swooh's FTP... i'm sorry it's down, but like i said it's beyond my control at the moment.  at least since the files/webpages are still available to view and download it'll help.  hopefully the problem will get sorted out soon.  i also apologize for the times swooh has gone down recently too, due to the service providor... that too is out of our control at the moment.  i'm sorry if you're unhappy with our service, but we're all trying as hard as we can to offer this service to members of the community free of charge and advertisement, and i apologize on behalf of Swooh if it's not good enough for some of you... but remember that we are doing our best, and we are doing it for the good of the community, not for personal gain.  swooh will probably continue to go down in the future occasionally for numerous reasons, but i hope most of you will continue to use it, as it's there for you to use :)

Y'know, if you'd asked nicely before demonstrating your lack of proper ettiquette and volatile attitude I might've made you a PHP uploader that could be configured to use your servers user database to let people to move, copy, upload, download and delete their files. Now....well, I don't want to.

Guys, enough. an0n, really, I don't care about your assertion - even if it's more true than it's false - that you can't give people broken toys. It's something for nothing. That's all that matters.

Stealth, you know what I think about this sort of thing. Do me a favour and drop it. Go away for a few hours and do something fun.
