Title: Car Modding
Post by: Max Sterling on November 08, 2003, 04:00:34 pm
Well, I started with MODding games when I was a kid, and then FS2.. and now I've modded... my CAR.

Here's a page with the list of performance MODs... and..

http://www.stephanos.net/steve/mustang/index.html

I've 'modded' the exterior as well :)

I dont have a car to modify myself or anything, but i see a lot of cars that have been round where I live - you need better alloys.

haha about time someone made a topic like this  :D

Very nice work on the exterior of your Mustang... but post other pictures too!  post some of the back, side, interior, etc.

i haven't personally done much "MODDING" work to my car... there's not really much you CAN do.  the only "MODding" has been done to the system (OK, the system's completely aftermarket, as well as the head unit), and a bit on the suspension (inflatable rear air shocks...) other than that i haven't really done any exterior-visible work.

Never thought I'd see this thread here.  I love cars and have been racing/modding them for the last 10 years.

Right now I'm riding in a 2003 Nissan Altima 3.5 SE (picture below) that I got a few months ago.  Has 245 horsies, and too much torque for the stock tires.  Right now the only mod I have in it is a WAI (that's a warm air intake for those who don't know) w/ a wider intake midpipe and apexi racing filter.  I am definitely going to continue modding my baby and hope to get it in the 13's in a few months.

Plans for the car, in order of what's next:

Greddy cat-back exhaust
lighter/smaller underdrive pulley
ECM flash (if they finally crack our computers)
racing slicks
headers
lighter flywheel
racepipe (if the headers don't include it, depends which I go for)

I may not get all of those, but I hope to get close.  I know I won't be satisfied til I break into the 13's.

Here's my car:

My Nissan Altima is, of course, 5 speed :D  It's a 3.5 liter, 6 cylinder V block slanted at 60 degrees, dual overhead cams, with 245 horses with a displacement of 213.45 cubic inches.  Small engine, I know, but it's pushing 246 pounds of torque at 4,400 rpm's.

Front wheel drive with thin, stock performance tires means this car basically sits there if I floor it.  That's the one thing I don't appreciate, cuz even when I want to cross a street or make a quick turn between traffic I spin for a split second.  But that will change if I get pseudo-slicks (they're basically racing slicks w/ a little bit of tread).

The WAI I installed adds about 7-10 horsies.  I haven't dyno'ed the car yet to know what the power is at the wheels, but I hope to do that soon.  Haven't taken this car to the track, either.  From what I've seen, it does about 14.3 to 14.5 in the 1/4, stock.  I've been planning a trip to the track for some time now, but it's just a mission to go (it's over an hour and a half drive).  Some have gotten it into the 13's already after modding, and I plan on being one of them.

Meh. I don't really care for Jaguar. It may be a classic, I don't actually know much about the Jaguar lineup, save for the XKR. And even then, my knowledge is limited.

I don't actually care if you 'take me seriously.'

This thread isn't going to change my feelings towards any of you, or my tastes in cars.

And why should you take me seriously?  I'd prefer to have a 3000Gt VR-4 (Or the Japanese MR version) over any vehicle on the market (except perhaps an FTO GP Version R, not available in America). I'd say my opinion is very biased.

Raa Tor'h, I think you ought to know that Jaguar used to be a purely British car firm (I believe). So did Aston Martine (why do you think they showed up in almost all the Bond films?).

Either way, take the car for what it is - not who made it - especially if you don't actually know who made it ;)

lol... Viper may not be the fastest in the world, but it definitely is in the top 10, if not the top 5.  And I guarantee, of all the production cars out there, it's the one that you are more likely to poop your pants in :)

I can hardly stand Ferrari anymore.  I don't know why, but their cars just don't do it for me.  Lamborgini, yes.  Maclaren, definitely.

The cars I've wanted but never got:

Toyota Supra twin turbo (my absolute favorite)
Mazda RX-7
(http://www.goldcoastcruisers.org/Assets/Memcars/BMasterson/full.jpg)
Gran National (once the fastest production car in the market)

BTW, Drew, the Prelude is nice (not the new body style, but the one in the pic) and it can potentially be quick if you do some real work to it.  I had a friend when I was into car clubs that had a prelude that ran 13.12's in the quarter mile.  He had a v-tech controller (that allows u to dial in where you want v-tech to kick in, if u know what v-tech is), full exhaust, some minor engine work, and a big ass turbo.  Don't remember how many pounds he was pushing from the turbo, though.    Thing was fast as hell, I loved watching it run at the track.

And I give Raa Thor'h some credit, the 3000 GT VR-4 was a beautiful and well made race car.

No, a cold air intake is a slightly different animal.  A cold air intake, like the one most ricers use (hondas, acuras, etc like to use Injen or Iceman), is actually a metallic pipe that goes from the throttle body down underneath the engine and places the air filter infront of one of the front tires, behind the bumper.  Look at this pic for the CAI:

The science behind it is basically that colder air circulates close to the ground, so by placing the air filter that low on the car (basically a few inches from the ground), you're allowing the air to breath the colder air.  Colder air is better for the car, performance wise.

A Warm Air Intake is basically a short midpipe from the throttle body to an air filter, still situated in the engine bay.  It doesn't scoop up any cold air from the bottom of the car.  It's not really warm air that it sucks in, though, cuz at wide open throttle enough air is getting pushed through the front grill that the temp is nominal.  See this pic of a WAI:

So why get a WAI when theoritically a CAI seems better?  Well, having a longer pipe in the CAI means that the car takes longer to breath that colder air thereby nullifying whatever gain you'd get in the cold air.  You'll never get a definitive answer on this one, though, it's mostly user preference if u want a WAI or a CAI (in this respect).

Second, with a CAI you have a chance of completely ruining your engine if you accidentally drive your car thru a heavy puddle.  Having the filter so close to the ground means you have a chance of sucking up that water.  If you car sucks up water, you hydrolock the engine and pray you have enough money for a new one (or find a junked one).  Many people don't worry about this, though, as where they live they don't suffer from flooding or think they're invincible (read: 16 year olds with daddy's money).

They sell a bypass valve that you cut into the CAI intake pipe where if the air filter gets completely submerged, the valve will open and would stop the water from getting to the throttle body.

Where I live and where my girlfriend lives there's too much flooding when it rains.  I don't trust that bypass valve (although people swear by it), so I decided to get the WAI.

Anyway, this was probably too much information :D

Btw, if you want to see some nice racing videos, look at this link.  There's some really nice races, from lamborgini's to hondas.

I do know that. But like I said, I never cared for Jaguar. It's personal preference, I don't understand why me voicing my opinion is taken so harshly by all of you. Opinions are like assholes, everyone has one.

Aston Martins were never big in America, or atleast not anywhere I've seen anyway. So I don't know anything about them, except what they show in GranTurismo, and even then, the cars are still biased by the programmers views of them.

Now I never said they weren't good or nice-looking cars (As you did to the ones we posted), just that I don't like them, and wouldn't buy anything Ford has produced. (Or GM for that matter, except for the Pontiac lineup (GTO, Trans-am/Firebird), which I have a soft-spot for...)

Actually, the blackbirds primary form of propulsion is through the air, while the jet car is land, its a car, just face it. Your just being silly and making yourselve look foolish.

If the "jet car" on land is a car, then in that case so is a go-kart, a tricycle, a scooter, rollerblades, and multiple other wheeled ground transportation

A one-of-a-kind, jet engine car that can go 4 miles without running out of gas, made for short, bursts of speed, is obviously not the kind of car we're talking about... so that's why i posted a picture of a blackbird... just to humor Thunder.  I'm making ajoke.  figures you'd have to take it seriously, being a car expert and all

EDIT:  IN that case, if you want to compete, try beating a Kawasaki Ninja (it's a motorbike, but hey, it's got wheels, so it must be a car, right!!!???)...  0 - 60 mph in under 2.5 seconds.

I live in the downtown area of the city where I work (Coral Gables) and you see at least 2 or 3 Aston Martin's a day.  There's a guy who has the Vanquish parked daily right across my apartment window when he goes to the gym.  It's a beautiful car, but it's not for me.  For some reason that car doesn't push my "I WANT I WANT I WANT" button.  I still gawk at it, though :)

In this city, you also see 2 or 3 Viper's a day (man I love them).  Gotta love Miami :D

I honestly think they fubared the new GTO.  It's extremely underpowered and looks... well, plain.  When I heard they were gonna re-release this car I almost jumped for joy cuz I loved the classic.  Was actually thinking of waiting to get one before the Altima.  But when I finally saw it and reviewed it, I wasn't impressed.

If you go to that website I linked that had all the racing videos, there's one of a Formula 1 race car racing against a fighter jet at take-off w/ full afterburners.  Can't remember which video it was.  Formula 1 was the winner.

I've not seen an Aston Martin on the road. There is a dealership in Nyack, but they have nothing but BMW's in the display window, and I'm not about to walk inside.

There was a mercialleago on the road near my house though, damn rich NYers...

And Vipers don't impress me. When I lived in Florida, I saw one almost every other day. I know I sound repetetive, but the only car that makes me excited is the 1999 3000Gt. If it were VR-4, it's be AWD, AWS, and have Active Aerodynamics, which is sweet, cuz the rear wing will shift postition at 55Mph. :D

Again, this is just me.

Also, I agree the GTO isn't sporty looking, but I like it, for one reason or another. But then again, I like things noone else here does...*looks away*

Lol, I mentioned the video w/ the jet fighter to kinda defend Stealth's posting of the Blackbird, but that didn't quite work out :)

Oh, and CelestialOne, that's not a camera in the tank barrel.  That's really a soap bubble.  Tanks today blow soap bubbles at their targets!

There's a car dealership up the street from where I live called The Collection (http://www.thecollection.com/) that's is like one city block big.  It's completely enclosed by a glass window, but behind that window is the most beautiful collection of cars I've ever seen.  One on side, they have all the Ferrari's parked just glinting in the gallery.  On the other side they have Porches, and between them they have the Aston Martin's.  You keep on walking down the sidewalk and your greeted with the most beautiful collection of Lotus'.  The place just continues on.  Everytime I have to drive by there I always slow down to look at the gallery (cuz that's what it basically looks like, an art gallery).

Look at the website and you'll see they have every single exotic car possible.  And supposedly, if they don't have it they will order it for you.

That car is tight.  Well-kept classics will always win my vote.

Quick question, would you get a classic PT cruiser or the new one?  I would get a classic one in a heart-beat.  The new one looks cheap and made poorly.  Plus it's slow as hell.

Alright, I'll show you the car that made me cream since I was little:

And it's father's version:

I don't know if any of you were old enough to remember, but there was this old tv program called Stingray.  The main character had the fattest corvette I had ever seen.  I think I only watched that show for the car.

Does anyone else think Porsche has sold out by making an SUV ?
The Boxster was made to be profitable, but at least it didn't detract from the core values that Porsche has spent the past 50 years developing. Hell, even the 924 was more "Porsche" than that thing. I'd get a VW Toe-rag instead.

i love corvettes... old and new.  my friend's restoring (OK, well he's financing, i'm doing most of the work :p ... i'm in the process (very slow, whenever i have time) of rebuilding the engine, it's lying in pieces in his garage) a 69 stingray.  it's a beautiful car... late 60s stingrays were very curvy, i love them... and fast too... very fast :D

about 2 weeks ago me and my friend were driving in a local movie theater looking for a parking spot when i spotted the infamous back end of a newer corvette (the flat four lights in the back ;) )... but i recognized it instantly that they were different.  within like 2 seconds i was like "pull over, there's a 2004 corvette over there".  i studied it a little more, and apparently the back windshield is a lot different from the other corvettes... more pointy, and longer.  in fact the whole back end is bigger.  and you gotta love those headlights  :D ;) :)... wow.  they even have FANS in them... to stop condensation i'm guessing.  i was thinking, it would make sense now with the whole 2004 corvette design, because with the back bigger and the way the back windshield is, and the headlights, i think they were going for as aerodynamic as possible, and they get flying colors for that... it looks badass

although one of my favorite cars of all time is the 1959 Cadillac... it's a beautiful car, gotta love it.  typical late 50s "simple" engine, but enormous... extremely big car, massive fins... you either love it or hate it... i love it.

my dad and i recently bought (for $1700) a 59 coupe, sitting up in North Carolina.  it's been sitting in a field for 5+ years, exposed to the elements, obviously with flat tires, etc... but the body is in semi-good condition still.  my dad used to restore 59 and 60 cadillacs for a hobby back in the day, so me and him are going to drive up there in the next few weeks, and try to get it running.  if we can, i'll drive it back... if we can't, we'll put it on the trailer and bring it back down.

although i think if i change the fluids, plugs, check distributor, timing, ignition, put a new battery in, pour a little gas in the carburetor, i'm sure she'll start right up.  hopefully.  i'm thinking 20 minutes to get her running... hopefully :p but i'll let you know how it works.
