Title: Project ends?
Post by: TrashMan on November 09, 2003, 08:41:35 am
When dooes a project actually end?

The HLP staff has based their new hosting policy on the asumption that there will be free modders after some of the current projects are complete.
But when are they complete? The staff put together doesn't want it to end - no one actually wants it. So they ake sequels. Just count. We have LM 1,2,3,4,5... Inferno 1&2, etc...

The guys make excellent stuff and it's great. But that leaves little hope for the new campaigns to have the attention the HLP hosted ones have.

Now, DOTA has it's own site and forums, and we're doing quite fine. But what's with other new projects that don't have so much luck....

Do write your toughts on this topic.

P.S. - This thread is neither an attack or insult against anyone. It's just a discussion.

I do agree with you, people WILL see their current projects as their babies, and, like all creative people, will never be 100% satisfied with the finished product. This isn't because anything is wrong with it, but simply because as you work, you improve, so every mod etc is a little bit better than the last. By the time you 'finish' you want to run through the first few again just to get them as good as the last few.
Hopefully this influx of new members will produce some more people to help with the various projects.

Derelict is finished. So is Warzone. LM isn't. Inferno isn't. The difference is, the first two have got all their missions out, probably had to do a bug patch or two, and that was it. Essentially, a campaign is done when its finally released.

Not all that complex :P

MG has a finish planned. Yeah the story is open-ended enough that we could do a sequel but I doubt we'd do one immediately. At the very least I'd want to take 6 months or so off before I started work on MG2 :D
Inferno will have a second release because they haven't told the whole story yet. Same with LM and many of the others that have sequels. There will be a second part to TMA for exactly that reason the first release only tells half the story.

No problem.

It was an excellent series and I think the NTF needs a little rest and some fresh ideas for a story.

I rather like shorter but hight quality works with good replay value than vast underdevepoled projects.

BWO will eventually be finished...and I aint doing no bloody sequels :D

Besides, there will be enough flame and ruin in BWO anyways.

Actually...Ace and I went over the missions and I'd say were getting very close to being done.  Alot of missions are "done" but without dialogue and testing.  Lots of work but not alot of mission creation.

Descent of Evil (http://freespace.volitionwatch.com/us/) is done, except for the Bastion (http://freespace.volitionwatch.com/us/nb.shtml) model...  But I doubt anyone here remembers Descent of Evil (http://freespace.volitionwatch.com/us/), so it's pointless...

No team can make sequels forever. Not even every team can make sequels at all. :) And not all campaigns are designed to have sequels. (Inferno, for example, was designed specifically to have quite a few chapters, which might explain why it has 'sequels'.) Anyway, I think BW's definition makes sense. ;)
