Title: Two things
Post by: Stryke 9 on November 09, 2003, 12:35:08 pm
One, was it any of you all who put in the time compression function thingy? Stumbled across it the other day while getting rushed by a gang of Myrms, tried to set my secondaries on dual-fire and ended up getting everything going at a quadrillion miles an hour. Not that good an idea to put it right next to default bindings, if any of you did that...

Two, is it possible to add some kind of "alternate name" line in FRED? Something where, for the purposes of the people in-mission, a ship would be called one thing, while to the game and to mission makers, it'd be another- this'd both give the "planet" function greater use and make it so that we didn't necessarily have to have the player called Alpha 1- not a whole lotta function beyond that, but it'd be a nice little tweak if it's easy to do and doesn't really take much time.

And... well, there was something else, but I'll remember it later. Proceed to ignore.

Oh, perhaps it was- did the whole pod system thing ever get implemented, where people could use special disposable afterburners or spare shields or powerpacks or whatever something like secondary weapons?

Uh, you do know that Freespace has a time multiplier, standard, right?

That's always been there. I've been lobbying for them to implement half and quarter-speed as well.

There's an alt-name field on the Ship Properties in FRED. That's been there since the beginning, too.

there is an alternate name, look for  the mission (I think) 'The Great Hunt' when that ravana jumps in, it's called 'Unknown' same thing with the first Sathanas

and time compression has been there sence FS1.

and from what I've seen walking the code, it was at least partaly implemented, but I don't know how much or what is needed to enable it or anything, you'll have to talk to Phreak

Re-read Stryke's post; he was talking about changing the ship names for the player while in-game. :)

The time compression thing, was just asking. Seemed like an oddly pointless and kinda irritating thing to be in there, but it didn't look like something Volition would bother to add, either. Half-speed would at least serve a purpose (hopefully no campaigns are so absolutely dull as to warrant 4x time-compression), but it'd also be kinda cheating- FS is all about the reflexes, pretty much, so if you take those out there ain't a whole lotta gameplay left.

And doesn't that aspect of the ship names thing only work for the classes? That's how I remembered it.

Yes, it'd replace what would normally be the ship class. What Stryke wants I think is to have a ship called, say, Alpha 1 but with the name displayed as something else for the player's benefit

It's for testing missions. If you have an event that occurs 6 minutes into a mission it's boring as hell to have to play for 6 minutes EVERY time you want to test that event (Especially since you're probably already annoyed that the event isn't working in the first place).

Its also for missions that involve long distances or retreats. There's a mission somewhere that involves you popping in about six km away from an ongoing firefight. It takes a while to charge in, so I always cut in time compressions and get there in moments, rather than minutes.

Then there's freaks that like to play the entire game in time compressed mode for the challenge. :D

I use the time compressor from time to time. For example that mission when you are testing the Pegasus stealth fighter. I want to kill the shivan corvette and don't care about the tests, so I press accelerate time so I don't have to wait that long.

When starting a new carrachter I like to have those wings in the medal chest but it's boring listetning to the instructor...

Wow, you've never realised time compression was there before? Heh, I used it a lot during FS1, when you had plenty of sitting around to do. :p

uh some types can be parsed and used at the moment.  you don't know how though.  i'm gonna need the following completed for it to work.  and it will be introducted after 3.6 is released

1: new hud icons
2: new weapon selection screen.  it will possibly need to be revamped
3: new ai code so the AI can use the pods

If you're going to update the weapons selection screen include my idea to allow you to arm all the ships in one wing at a time. You'll need it even more if your wingmen will also be using the pod.
