Title: what to d/l
Post by: Rice128 on November 10, 2003, 02:01:42 pm
Hi, I'm a newbie to this site I'm really surprised that FS2 community is still active.  I was wondering what are some of the mods that I should have running?

Deus Ex Machina (http://www.geocities.com/ipw47/dem.html). ;)

Lightning Marshall 3 and 4 are good, too.  Also check out the Freespace Port.

Have a look at Skippy's campaign list (there's a link in my FAQ). He's pretty much got a list of all the completed mods (although some of the older ones might be missing)

FSP is the Freespace Port.  The entire Freespace 1 game was converted to use the Freespace 2 engine.

You should try Free Space Open, also!  The developers released the source code for FS2 and the wonderful people here have been modifying it to be better than most games out there (or soon will be).

Check out the SCP forum (Source Code Project, the ones handling the modifying of FS2) here on the same website to see what the fun is all about.  Trust me, you will NOT be disapointed!

Thanks for the replies.  I downloaded the fs-open-r.exe and have been trying to run it w/ the new launcher but I'm failing miserably.  Is there anything I'm suppose to do before running the .exe file??

Run launcher.exe, with both launcher.exe and fs2_open_r.exe in the root FS2 directory.  Select fs2_open_r.exe as the freespace executable in the launcher (by hitting browse and selecting it) and go to the video tab, select DX8, and change your resolution to 1024x768.  Also, some of the later builds don't seem to work correctly in normal DX8, so add the tag -htl to the command line in the launcher to enable ht&l.  Press "Apply" to set your registry up as it should be, and then press "Run" to launch the game.  There were a few builds that didn't work if not started directly from the launcher, and since I'm not positive that this has been corrected you're probably best off setting it up this way each time you play.  It's a little buggy, but that's the general gist of it.

Make sure you have the media VP, too, or else you won't see much difference. You can grab it one one of these threads, or on the SCP downloads page.
