Title: The time has come, All Hands To War
Post by: Hippo on November 12, 2003, 05:29:03 pm
(http://www.sectorgame.com/ahtw/images/AHTWDemo.jpg)

The time has come, for the release of the AHTW demo.

After 2 years of problems, hurdles, dissappearing staff members, and 3 new hard drives and restarts, the demo is finally done.

I would like to first personally thank the staff, who in the last 2 weeks, went from a leisurly pace of testing, to a greuling triple time march:

Whitelight, Alkabeth Angel, Goober5000, and CobaltStarr for testing.
Hunter, and Ferret for doing some voice acting.
GalacticEmperor for listening to my constant questions.
Goober5000 (again) for letting me use his orion Nameplates.
Hunter (again) for providing hosting...
Ulundel (formerly TenOfTwelve) for making the AHTW logos.
Killadonuts; even though he dissappeared long ago, he helped shape the project into what it is now.
Shivannode, for calling the Shivans, 'Shavudans' and kick-starting the idea in my head.

Now what you have all been waiting for, complete with;
5 Detailed & challenging missions,
A fleet of Orions, looking how they should,
Partial voice acting done by an all british cast,
And an in-depth storyline.

And now, without further ado,

AHTW Demo direct link (//www.sectorgame.com/ahtw/demo/ahtwd.exe)

AHTW official site (//www.sectorgame.com/ahtw)

AHTW forums (http://www.sectorgame.com/forum/ikonboard.cgi?s=3fb2bbf85062ffff;act=SF;f=23)

You are warned however, ships and weapons may not work if you do not extract the tables from the VP and put them in your freespace/data directory.

Questions? Comments? Post them here, or on the AHTW forum on sectorgame. (link above)

:blah: Was hoping it was for FS2, as the game is much more worth modding.

There's a certain atmosphere to FS1 that's different from FS2.  FS1 is cool in its own way, and deserves a new campaign every once in a while. :)

True, but I doubt that many people have FS1 anymore.

There's a few people floating around with FS1. And if this needs to be ported to FS2 when it's done, I'm sure that can be arranged. ;)

retro-chic :)

Damn... means I'll have to install FS1 again.

(actually, it has the advantage that I can easily mod FS2 but -play user campaigns on FS1)

I don't know if you speak german Hippo but if you do you might want to try pimping your demo here (http://www.amigalien.de/freespace/hp/forum.htm).

My german is non-existant but as far as I can tell it's an Amiga FS1 mod forum. You should find some people willing to play an FS1 mod there.

it was decided to have a demo about 2 year ago... the project is about 2.5... It will be ported eventually, whether the FSC team takes it up after awakenings, or I get the staff to help, t will happen, but that time is not now... I've already gotten 3 people joining the staff, since some people are noticing that the campaign hasn't fallen apart again... If a group of people would like to port it, contact me, and i'll aprove them porting it... But untill Im not the only FREDer (i may not any more, since i have 3 PMs waiting :p ), just getting the FS1 version done will take my full attention. But, if you want to, you are welcome to port it, just PM me irst, so that there arent 3 people doing it at once, seperately...

Im doing homework ATM, but them im planning on a news paragrah thingy...

I went to the german site, and this is what babelfish translated like:

Translation:

Rear one,

what gentleman-issued itself with you as more successful?
Bombers shoot or bomb killen?
My wing people make despite instruction which it want
and particularly starting from the level flier gehn drauf like the flies
and I stand alone there.

What am I to do against it?

Origonal:

Hi,

was hat sich bei euch als erfolgreicher herrausgestellt?
Bomber abschießen oder Bombe killen?
Meine Flügelleute machen trotz Anweisung was sie wollen
und vor allem ab dem Level Flieger gehn die drauf wie die Fliegen
und ich steh allein da.

Was soll ich dagegen tun?

... Maybe FreeTerran can help?

Here goes (my german's a bit rusty - read:crap, 'cos I haven't done it for two and a half years - but what the hell):

Hi! (duh :p)

What's the best way to do this mission? Shoot down the bombers or the bombs?
My wingmen keep doing stuff even though I give them orders (roughly)

Particularly in the mission "like the flies" OR they keep dropping like flies (dunno which, the babelfish bit is confusing me!), I end up all on my own with no support. How do I do the mission?

I think that's the general gist of it, but the grammar is a bit crap, so I'm not sure. Given the standard of grammar and spelling around here, I probably shouldn't be surprised.

That help? :)

Well, I did play the first three missions... there are some... well, you know. Work needed sorry Hip. There are some spelling errors, and the briefing for mission2 is very innaccurate. There's also a lot of stuff in there that doesn;t need to be in there (eg. the red alert, subspace mission) and also a few niggling bugs throughout (When I went to change my Athena loadout in the first mission, my entire wing had only a single bank of avengers, with the other one empty.

Some of it is, of course, artistic, and totally up to you (RA, Subspace etc.) but the spelling errors, bugs and briefing inaccuracies really should be fixed.

Mission 1 -

Command Breifing, Stage 1

Welcome to the GTD Minnow pilot. I'm Admiral Palardy, and I'll be in command of you and your squadron. Because of your brother’s recommendation, you have been assigned to Alpha wing.Untill your skills are up to spec, Commander Suppa will fly as Alpha 1, and you will be Alpha 2. We have no doubts that you will gain the skills required to command the squad.

Stage 2

*Quarterdeck Breifing

Briefing Stage 3

The fighters of Kappa wing will assist your srike force in any way possible.

Stage 4

There are also several wings of fighters in the system, possibly capeable of jumping to your area.

And that's just mission 1. I'd go further, bu I don't want to give away spoilers. Mission 1 also red alerts for no perceptible reason, and then tells you you'll be flying Anubises, though the nature of RA missions means you fly exactly what you flew last mission. There are other small errors and such all through the parts I played.

I'm not trying to be overcritical here. It's just that yu have to realize, the plot, mission and mod design etc. etc. may be the most incredible in FS history, but it's the little details that people notice, and it's the mistakes that people remember. Pay attenbtion to the little details, eliminate the mistakes, and you could have a great campaign here. Without them, well, it isn;t so great.

I know I spellchecked every word... How those got through all 3 people... I don't know... And I remember fixing the word Briefing... As for the RA, personally, im no so keen on the whole Return To Base thing in missions I make... It HAD to end there, incase the player chose to disable a cruiser, and kill it, since they pop up again in mission 3... I just see RAs as a way for the mission to end when I want it to... It's not going to be a common event after the demo though... AS for the Anubises, the very first paragraph in the mission 2 briefing explains it...

I haven't been able to finish the first mission either... I'm thinking having infinite waves of bombers isn't the best thing to do with this one... I order my wingmen to protect the cruiser and go after the bombers myself... and without fail, the cruiser goes down after I kill about 5 waves of bombers. It doesn't make any sense for them to come out of subspace close enough to the cruiser that 3 of them live long enough to fire off bombs no matter what I do....

Yes, I was part of the AHTW team.
I remember saying that it would make a great campaign if it used the FS1 Port.  I thought it would be a better looking campaign.  I have to look for some of the original (old ass) missions if I still have them.

Sorry I kinda bailed out Hippo.  I had become too busy to even look at my computer.
